    My grandmother grew up in the countryside of the state of Virgi,. She and my great-grandmother used to make pig feet in the oven. It's awesome to see how others on the other side of the globe in a different culture make them. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

    Can you still harvest Canola the traditional way with combines without having to cut and lay it down first?

    • @joshforresta
      @joshforresta Před 6 lety +3

      Are neighbouring farm does but we don't as you can loose a lot of canola when you cut it traditionally because canola pods are very delicate. The rotors hit the canola and lots of pods will break and dump the seed on the cutters so it simply falls through onto the ground. We swath the canola when its still ripe so it dries up on the ground and the pickup headers are a lot better for the canola as you loose less crop that way. So yes you can but in Canada at least its very rare.

      Tom Quick canola has a very delicate seed packet similar to a pea pod. Canola is usually cut while it is still somewhat green so that the seeds don't drop. With it cut into a windrow, or swath, the canola plants have more structure to help keep the seed pods together until they are threshed in the combine. Cutting ahead of time not only saves combining time but increases the yield of the field from less parasitic seed loss.

    • @denniscurless904
      @denniscurless904 Před 6 lety +4

      It is just being cut and windrowed, dried, and run thru the combine to separate the seed from the plant.

    Mornin' can anyone answering me, why in Canada grain (or rape in this case) is cutted in an early state and let it dry on field? Why does no farmer wait until it's ready and cut and harvest it on same time?

    • @johnnyappleseed738
      @johnnyappleseed738 Před 5 lety

      depends on how fast it heads out and if they take a chance on dryer weather coming to lay it down to dry so it is easier to combine. If you straight combine and its still stringy it can be very hard on the equipment and empty the pods.

  • @peterjames2004
    @peterjames2004 Před 6 lety

    can you explain to the un knowing why do you swath it first then combine it in England we as far as i know combine it standing

    • @chunkmen
      @chunkmen Před 6 lety +1

      in canada you have to swath because it is rainy when the canola comes to harvest so you have to swath to get the grain to dry down evenly as canola tends to ripen from the bottom up and you get docked at the elevator for cracked seed (on the plant to long) and green seed (not dry enough)

    • @heatmoon
      @heatmoon Před 5 lety

      Because it matures and dries evenly after being run over with a swather. Swathers used to be much more common, no time anymore. Also gotta line up the combines. How many gallons of diesel in prep and harvesting that piece.

      the grain harvested is sold and the proceeds all go to the charity that works to help people all over the globe

    • @festus51
      @festus51 Před 6 lety

      so do all this 26 farmers and equipment donate their time and equipment for free? Just wondering who or how all this grain gets donated to charity?

    • @jasonpaisley1535
      @jasonpaisley1535 Před 6 lety +5

      the farmer who owns the land signs up a field with the Canada foodgrains bank before he seeds it and can cover the seeding costs himself or partner with an organization like a church or a company to help cover the costs. then at harvest time friends and neighbors volunteer their time and equipment and the grain gets hauled straight to the elevator and sold into the grain market like it normally would except they send the cheque for the grain to the charity instead of the farmer.

    • @9120Case
      @9120Case Před 6 lety +5

      The cash amount that is collected from the sale of the grain is then quadrupled by the Canadian Government, so $1 becomes $5, and then that total amount is used to buy food for the needy through a charity of choice. This particular event raised close to $500000. Yes half a million from just one small community.

    I wonder what they are saving the straw for?

    • @johnnyappleseed738
      @johnnyappleseed738 Před 5 lety +2

      the straw or chaff just goes back into the ground as fertilizer as it decays. The swathing you are referring to is laying it down for the combines to process the seed pods from, then out the back of the combines is the dust of the plant that is the left over to re fertilize the earth.
