Gander is one of the larger towns in Newfoundland, probably most famous for the role the town (and surrounding towns) played during 9/11, as told in the Come From Away story. But of course, there is more to the town than this.

I had no idea that Gander was so rich with history! Another place to visit for sure! Thanks!
Thanks again, Mark, for a great presentation of the area. We hear that "Come From Away" will be on stage in Gander this summer and hope to catch a performance.
Watching your videos is like having a friend who's a local and can give a better perspective on the place than travel books can. Keep up the good work.
I grew up in Gander. A few little extra details about the town that most people aren't aware of:
The town originally grew up around the airport, but by the 50s it was evident that a proper, planned town was needed farther away from the airport itself. So the original new townsite was laid out in the shape of a goose (or gander) head. New subdivisions mask it now. Look on a map and see if you can spot the head.
Also, because of the town's close ties to aviation, nearly all the streets are named after aviators, from the earliest days of aviation (there's a Wright Crescent and an Earheart Street, for example), up to astronauts (e.g. Marc Garneau Place).
And, having been the crossroads of the world, many famous people from the 50s and 60s passed through the airport. Gander was the first place the Beatles stopped in North America; Fidel Castro famously experienced snow for the first time there, and went tobogganing.
God bless you, people of Gander.
When we first moved to Toronto, one of my dad's co-workers enquired about the best time to visit Newfoundland. Dad said "the last day of July and the first day of August." The man flew in June to Gander. No tunnels to the airport, you walked down the stairs pushed up to the plane and across the tarmac to the terminal. Beautiful in Toronto on his departure, shorts and sandals, Gander 6 inches of snow. Upon his return he found my father and told him he wasn't joking.
Game 7, fingers crossed that the boys in blue can do something they have never done in my lifetime, beat Boston.
So sorry about game 7 Don. I talked about it with dad. He really thought this was the year too.

Great review of Gander, Ive been in Gander 40 years now and there's a lot of history considering its a relatively new town
You got that right. There are some big things like the ones I mentioned in the video, but also a bunch of cool little pieces of history that some of the other folks are mentioning here in the comments.
A great book on the Gander story is The Day the World Came to Town by Jim DeFede. highly recommend the Audible Audiobook.
A great place with some sad history unfortunately............nicely done Mark.
Thank you. Some sad history for sure, but lots of history we can be very proud of too!
Gander is a relatively new town in comparison to other places on the island. Most people in Gander have roots in other places in Newfoundland as the town developed around the airport instead of the airport developing because of the town. Probably another reason why Gander feels a little different.
Thank you for such a lovely video .
My pleasure 😊
