I kinda liked how Season 3 acknowledged the fact that throughout S1 and 2, his friends just kept relying on him to take out the big bad by himself, they expected him to just be able to win no matter what, that he’d always be the one to save them, and how much that ended up weighing on Judai. One of the reasons why Judai became so attached to Johan was because, 1) Johan was a lot like him, personality wise and background wise with his connection to the spirits and 2), Johan wasn’t just a part of the cheer squad, he actually fought alongside Judai as an equal instead of following him around until he expectedly beat the bad guy.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 Před 3 lety +75

Pretty much. The only one in the same boat as Judai prior to Season3 was Manjoume and he is not exactly the person one can talk one's soul out about all the whacky shenanagans going on. Johan meanwhile embraces his life completely and thus symbolises a better version of Judai and that is what he needs after being seen as "ol' reliable" for roughly 1.5 years. To lose that because of a conflict that he is the source of is just horrific for Judai and that starts a really bad downwards spiral.

I greatly dislike the fact that the "Children's card game" idea is still so prolific when it comes to talking about the Yu-Gi-Oh anime because it's not a children's card game in the continuity of the show. It's their economy, their national sport and legitimate career path in the context of the Yu-Gi-Oh universe. While I do agree that the idea of a academy for the sole purpose of the game is a bit farfetched and I really wish they fleshed out the setting a bit more to see if their is a focus on standard education, I like to think it's a lot like U.A where the main focus is the Duel Monsters and their is still supplementary courses they can take as well. But the idea that the game that fuels almost every aspect of the verse is meant for children is a bit dated and really fucking tired at this point when you consider Duel Energy is literally what fuels Neo Domino City, is used for galactic warfare and genocide AND SPLIT THE FUCKING REALITIES OF 4 DIMMENSIONS AND BROUGHT THEM BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. But hey, maybe that's just me?

It's stupid, but also kind of makes sense when you consider that Japanese culture really doesn't seem to like replacing VAs unless the VA did something horrible. Like, from my understanding, the Bleach anime ended because the VA for one of the major characters died, and I'm willing to bet a large part of the reason why Dragonball Super hasn't had the last manga arc or current one animated was because Bulma's VA passed away too. The only instances I can think of where a VA fron a Japanese company got replaced are in the Yakuza series, where on two occasions, different VAs got in trouble with the law. One had the character he played modeled after him, but was busted for drugs or something like that after that game came out, and the character's model was altered in future releases of the game so that it didn't resemble him as much, and the one from Judgment got arrested and the game was actually delayed because they wanted to cleanse the project of him and had his voice replaced with someone else. At least, that was how I heard all this went down.

Trap cards and generic spells existed in Season 1, like was Trap Hole or Change of Heart really THAT rare?
Of course, only the characters we saw existed to sell cards, but yeah, the show trying to play off that Yugi and Joey were just good or smart is a joke, the cards can't be overpriced because Joey obtained them (legally?), so there must only be like 50 other duelists in the world using cards like Man-Eating Plant (Mokuba).

@@Goblin_Hands The answer to your question is, yes. In fact if you watched Season 1 you'd realize that only Yugi, Seto and Bakura really used spells and traps, with Joey gaining more later. Also, in Season 1, as the rules weren't fully made yet, tributes weren't a thing. You had it, you played it. So obviously only the guys that had cards that were 2000+ were at the top with only elite duelists using more than specialized spells and traps. They got more common later on but even in Season 2+ of the OG, GX and Zexal, they make huge deals out of these cards. I really enjoyed GX, despite its flaws. They explored interesting things, like how Jaden/Judai being the "wins all matchers" protagonist would affect him and the people around him. As his teacher says, he is lazy af in class, but because he keeps winning they see him as a role model and skip out on his classes. Jaden essentially has a negative effect on some people, even his close friends that start to over-rely on him and expect him to solve all their problems.
Jaden is also affected by his success, as he believes he is the one who needs to solve everyones problems since he is the best duelist - hence why he wants to go to the other dimension alone. I think that is why he bonds so well with Johan, the two of them are equals and can relate to each other, and Johan doesn't demand anything of Jaden, just like Chazz (did feel a bit weird that the two of them, Jaden and Chazz, never bonded more since they both could see duel spirits but oh well).
Heck, even his end goal changes, at the start he simply wants to be the king of games, but by the end he has grown up and decides to use his mystical powers for good. Despite season 1 being mostly goofy episodes it really shows how far Jaden has gotten from where he started. The original Yugioh show was (IMO) about standing up for yourself and finding the courage - Yugi is a bullied kid who through the series manages to make friends and do what is right.
GX is about growing up and the tough things that happen and how they can change a person. I really like that Jaden has been really "jaded" by the end of the show, and the final lesson he gets is that it is okay to enjoy dueling, not everything is about life and death, despite what has happened to him.
I am sad that Jaden is essentially the only character that has a really good development, I mean Zane was close but was brought back for some reason, and the other characters mainly serve as cheerleaders after a while. I was also a bit annoyed in S1 when they had so many references to the first show but not really doing anything with it, like having a fake millenium item just because.
All in all I really enjoyed it and was sad when I found out that they hadn't dubbed s4, but at least I managed to find the subbed version so I could see the end of the show. Oh, and regarding the school subjects - pretty sure they have all subjects + dueling, we see them in science class, history class and so on in a few episodes, but since the show is about cardgames we're naturally not gonna have an entire episode where they go to literally every other subject. Also, about the rule book thing... (feel like you were joking but oh well) They are there to become professionals, I mean you have rule books for literally every sport but if you want to go pro you need more than that, hence the school.

The joke is that I think that the way 4kids wrote the serious aspect of the plot actually ends up working out better in the context of Season3.
Zane stays dead and has a better endingtalk, Syrus is less insufferable because his characterarc is at least comprehensible compared to Sho,(I mean, the issue of him being way too passive still exists, but at least his thoughts and words have proper context. F*ckin Sho just wasn't a good friend, he wasn't even there for Judai in spirit during the depression-phase, instead saying "he needs to find the answer himself", which basically means "Screw him, not our responsibility" to me.) Jaden completes his characterarc early and literally just doesn't come home because he intends to take care of his responsibilities, etc.

@@lpfan4491 I agree with this mostly, season 4 was too short for my liking and a bit weird -which seems to be due to the fact that it was going to be longer originally.
The worst part of s.4 IMO was Zane coming back and the plot with "darkness" being meh, except for the episodes that explored the characters fears for their own future (Alexi and Chazz).
Cyrus is... Odd in a way, I mean the guy climbs to Obelisk blue yet still acts like a child and is a bad friend, or over-dependent on Jaden.
I did like that Jaden was basically done with everyones bs and just said "fix your own damn problems (looking at you Cyrus), I'm keeping to myself since danger is attracted to me."
It was a more mature and depressed Jaden than we had seen before, yet he still popped in to help when he was needed.
I'm not sure how I would have changed the plot and if it would have been better. As I said I like things in season 4 and I think the ending is bittersweet and fitting as the show starts and ends with Jaden meeting Yugi.

This is actually why I think the dubstory of Season3 is superior....in its raw form, not how it is acted out in english, lol.(The german dub has some better wording and halfway decent voiceacting, so I am all over that) The characters just are more strong on their own in my eyes(I mean, Zane saying he is proud of Syrus is just great) and the lack of Season4 means that the events have proper consequences, nothing outside of a few potential deaths are undone.

  • @Zetact_
    @Zetact_ Před 3 lety +73

The problem with GX is that it did so much right that it raised the bar too high for any of the following series to compare.
Duel Academy becomes increasingly plausible as the game proceeds. Like Small World literally had a guy create a computer program to analyze what you could use it for in your deck. Also if you assume that the Duel Academy in 5D's is similar with the one in GX then they do teach normal classes since Aki was able to become a doctor and her high school was a Duel Academy. I imagine that they're sort of like IRL Catholic schools, just with religious curriculum replaced with card games. And in-universe, while it's mostly done in subsequent series, there seems to be some sort of advanced techniques that you need to go through to learn different summoning mechanics (like in Arc-V how Yuzu needed to go through many episodes of training to learn how to Fusion Summon and Gongenzaka needed training to learn how to Synchro Summon).
I think that the issue with Judai topdecking is actually something that gets addressed fairly early on when they established that topdecking is, in-universe, a skill that you CAN train. In the eggwich episode. Is it silly? Yes. But it also is a neat piece of worldbuilding. And it's not like Judai is the only duelist who topdecks, most of the main cast use decks that, at the time, would be extremely bricky and impossible to make as consistent as they played but I can excuse it because the series addressed that it's something they can attain with practice. And it's not even like that's out of left field, it might be based directly on the Pharaoh being able to do it (and it's done in 5D's, Zexal, and Arc-V), just that in GX it's not done with magic as it is in the other series. All the weird, silly, kinda dumb pieces of worldbuilding in GX are done in a way that I actually find them super fun and it manages to blend the goofy stuff with the serious stuff in a unique and interesting way. Like Kaiba sending cards to space? That's silly. The cards being bombarded with cosmic radiation of an eldritch monster turning the spirits inside the cards twisted and destructive? That's actually real neat.
I agree that the side cast being hard to balance was an issue, but I only really think it started becoming an issue in season 2 and 3, in 2 mostly because so many were forced into the Society of Light (which did serve a purpose in making the Society more threatening) and in 3 it's just because so much focus was on the new characters. I'd have liked to see more of the Genex tournament, and more stuff with Dis-Duels even as one-off fillers because the filler in GX is super fun but I can get that it'd bloat the series with stuff that isn't as important.
Rei you need to look into extended materials to see she's a good duelist. That is to say, Tag Force, where she runs Lightsworn, which is way more awesome to see than the weird anime-exclusive egg deck. Tag Force was the best Yugioh game series, for real.
S4 being rushed, if you weren't aware, was an unfortunate effect of KENN (Judai's VA) having scheduling issues since he isn't just a VA but also a singer.

The main problem with GX and all the shows tbh is that they didn't follow a manga and the manga are two different verses. Konami wasn't gonna wait for the 5D's manga to finish in 3 years just so they could then adapt it into an anime. It's better for them to have the two of them be separate. They already knew they couldn't do this given the large amounts of filler DM had just so they could keep up with the manga. Plus not having to follow an existing story allows the writers to have a lot more creative freedom with the show since they aren't being restricted to an existing story.
The only fault Konami really has is if they want to push certain archetypes and cards in their latest booster packs. The showrunners have to incorporate said cards into the show to coincide with their release. The same is true for a lot of shows that are made to sell products. Like Transformers for instance. And even then it's always up to the people behind the show to incorporate said product in the show well. Plenty have done it well before.
The reason I mentioned Soulburner being poorly handled was more the fact that when he was introduced he pretty much curve-stopped on Gou and Aoi who were said to be very strong duelists. Though maybe that's more of an issue with how the writers handled Gou and Aoi than they did Soulburner. But either way, it definitely felt like Soulburner was like the next version of Crow. A character introduced to sell an archetype of cards who ended up sidelining other fan-favorite characters.

Personally, GX was fun for me growing up. Admittingly, I had a fictional Crush on Jaden (only saw the dub) and thought parts of his journey was fascinating to watch as he grew up from being a naive duelest to growing up and realizing to become his own duelist is important than to be the best or next king of games. Best episode was ultimately for me was the ending duel with him and Yugi even if was never dubbed, because it showed how much Jaden grew from his childhood aspirations to be a fully fledged duelest on his own. But yeah, i think the show needed some more structure and flow regarding how all of these points could have been utilized better narratively. Still, a fun guilty pleasure of my past i will always have a good time with.

I completely understand why people would think GX is extremely silly, especially after the incredible finale of Duel Monsters, but I think that the reason why it's still so loved by a lot of people, is because (for me, at least) GX is a series about *growing up, becoming an adult, and the responsibilities and fears that arise from that* .
Season 1 is a lot of slice of life, meeting new characters that either become important or we never see again, it's about the first steps of adolescence, just kids enjoying life, doing what they like, meeting people, some of them will become important, some others won't, and that's fine. Then when the Seven Stars/Shadow Riders arc starts, it's the characters realizing that not everything is fun and games, there's some serious things that you must do as well, and that even though you might be scared to face them, or afraid of failing (Kaibaman duel), there's people you can depend on, there's those who will stand with you (Daitokuji duel and alchemy).
Season 2 is about identity and belonging. Here the Society of Light is introduced, and it becomes the "cool kids' club", it's "exclusive" and the ones that are in are "better". Characters start betraying previous friendships for a chance to enter it just based on that information. I think it's a very common ocurrence for this to happen during highschool, where people will change who they are, and even lie to others and themselves, to look cooler to others, they start saying things like they are boring just for appearances' sake. Then again, people love being part of a group, just how much as these people willing to sacrifice to be part of one? Are you even properly part of a group if you aren't being yourself? It is also about destiny, and about people who tell you you "can't" do something, that it's impossible, and try to bring you down, and how you can overcome that. Kaiser Ryo also struggles with his own identity after not doing as well as expected, not knowing who he is, or who he should be, and what he is willing to do to be better, to be stronger.
Season 3 is about consequences and responsibility. Judai has the best of intentions when trying to save Johan, however his recklessness and growing desperation ends up "killing" his friends one by one. You must know that your actions can have many degrees of consequences both for you, and for those around you. You aren't a kid anymore, and you can't expect to do whatever you want, whenever you want, and not having to own up to it. You have to be responsible. Judai, in his grief, becomes the Supreme King, and causes even more destruction, and then tries to run away from his responsibilities by not using Polymerization when he goes back to being himself, the card that got all his friends killed. But thanks to the Kaiser he realizes that he can't run, and that he must press onward owning up to his mistakes, and the sadness and anger he and his friends must've felt, he'll use them to move on and fight, finally taking responsibility for his actions and activating Polymerization again. Yubel was also Judai's responsibility, and he decides to accept them instead of reject them. Judai is starting to become a proper adult.
And Season 4 is about adulthood. Here we see the cast graduating from the academy, and what their aspirations in life are. They have all grown up during these last years, and have become adults. Here we see their fears of what their lives might become now that they must fend for themselves and don't have the comfort of the academy anymore. Manjoume wants to go pro, but fears being a failure. He takes on the Ojamanjoume role, selling out his integrity for quick recognition, but realizes that these kinds of shortcuts aren't worth it. We see how all these characters have grown up. Judai has become broodier, because these last years/seasons have taught him that being an adult is actually pretty serious stuff. He started as a happy-go-lucky guy in season 1, but he has learned a lot about the world, and has realized just how tough, unfair, and painful it all can be. He must also say goodbye to the people from the academy, since everyone will be going their separate ways, but knows that even if they aren't together, they will still be friends (Chronos duel the series' GOAT). Then the graduation duel with Yugi happens, where Judai learns his final lesson: That despite being an adult, and knowing the great amount of responsibilities that conveys, and how serious it may be, never forget to enjoy life.
I think a lot of people were going through highschool to college while they watched GX, and while I'm 100% sure I'm reading WAY too much into it, I wouldn't be surprised if this element of the characters growing up made them connect with this series in a special way. Everyone is at least a bit scared to get out of their comfort zone, and having to face the world by themselves. And hey, this makes me enjoy GX way more than just see it as kids playing card games in school.
TL;DR I read way too much into silly show about card games but it makes me enjoy it way more and understand why so many people have a special place in their hearts for it.

One thing I never understood, even as a kid, was why is there so much censorship?
I can understand censoring the blood, violence, and sexual content but why censor death or change the names?
There were plenty of other kid shows before GX that had worse things like abuse, eating disorders, and even Sesame Street did an episode on the death of loved ones. So it's not like kids don't know what death is.
As for the names, again, there were plenty of other shows that had characters with non-American names. Especially other animes dubbed by other companies. Not to mention that almost every American kid has seen Disney's Mulan.
So, who is this supposed to appeal to? Censoring is supposed to appeal to a certain audience, right? But who?
The only thing I can think of is parents who don't want to answer any complicated questions their kids might ask and just have shows like this answer those questions for them.

  • @IWriteTooMuchForBleachIGuess

Huh. Honestly I'm a bit disappointed this wasn't more a love letter to the series, but I certainly understand the show's flaws. If you plan on discussing Yubel at another time or the seasons by themselves later, perhaps I: some single unknown who's opinion is relatively worthless in the grand scheme of things because of this- should save my actual thoughts for then? As for the cards affecting dubbing though, Vrains' 2nd half of it's final season coincidentally resumed its dub release, and the cards that kinda corresponded with that Season Eternity Code released over a year ago. In addition packs often come out with cards at least in america before they appear in the show. So they certainly don't seem to be in a rush to dub Sevens. Of course it could be the fact we might be in a unique era where Rush Duels are actually so radically different and not in the US, though the Vrains era format may technically be over we're still in a Link format or an "Eternal" Vrains format until something changes. Therefore the anime wouldn't have to "Rush" to keep up with the next series' cards.

I’m probably in the minority here, considering I’ve read some of the comments, but yeah I never liked GX. I was hyped at the beginning since I liked the whole ‘school adventure vibe’ back then so when I heard about GX at first, I was really excited to watch it. But as time goes by, I got really bored of it. It’s all too focused on Jaden than some of the characters are just there for additional content.
Take a look at Bastion. He showed so much potential at the first episode, being the intellect kind of guy, having the confident aura and skills, and even a potential rival for the protagonist at the start. And then we got some guy who who has a terrible overall dueling record. We have Atticus who some students claim to be a ‘good duelist’ only to not even have a single win (maybe he had one but I may or may not have forgotten), and don’t even get me started with how Aster’s development went (srsly the guy beat both Zane and Jaden but lost to Chazz).
And of course I didn’t like Jaden that much, probably my least favorite main protagonist if I’m being honest. He’s just overconfident and he’s already an exceptional duelist right from the start. He barely even listens in class and yet he wins a lot of duel. It’s like why does he even go to Duel Academy if he’s just gonna sleep and that he’s already a very good duelist? Of course I got bored eventually and decided to stop watching it during the Darkness Arc, not to mention that I don’t remember most of the plot anymore as I used to so my argument isn’t really structured. I really can’t see myself relate to the guy. I want to say more but I can’t fully express them into comprehensible words (I suck at that).
But hey, this is just my opinion. I know a lot of people would disagree with me but that’s fine. We all have different tastes, but I do hope my comment doesn’t lead to heated arguments. Oh well, too late for that.

My biggest gripes with the show was the inclusion of Johan, I understand what his purpose in the series was; But that slot could've been used better for a rival like Chazz, as Chazz not only sees spirits but is also one of the people that isn't a Judai's cheerleader.
Johan and Jaiden just felt so similar, their chemistry is very stale. The best way for Judai's conflict to be resolved, would've been Chazz blowing up infront of him and just telling how much he's been trying to catch up to Judai (After all loses he has) and maybe even beating Judai in a duel or drawing just to show that they're equals.
Everyone else is, I don't even know; The other characters just seems to be there to hype Judai up or being the "Brock" of the series just explaining what's happening.

Syrus should have grew into Zane 2.0. he was the exact same toddler at the end of the series, how the hell did he not grow in 4 years???
Chumley is...come on he's a meme. That's when they thought it would be ok to give a random character a swollen face and body and look like someone stuck a beehive on his face. He uses Koala as a deck ffs.
Bastion was ok at first, but became one too, he likes formulas...that's it. He should have had...never existed?
Tyranno, he has a dino deck and hat, personally Rex Raptor has way more personality, it was hard for me to distinguish the difference between him and Crocodile.
Blaire grew up more than Syrus, that is just sad. She had an egg deck for like an Episode, she was basically a Rebecca 2.0.
Chazz was just a joke of a rival, like was he ever even a threat to anyone? He apparently won against a rival school, but damn, combining the slow power of Armed Dragons with the inconsistency of VWXYZ, and the headaches of Ojamas gave even more reason to not care about him.
Yeah, aside from Zane, Alexis (I guess), what other characters are interesting? Jaden from Season 4 or maybe the guy riding Exodia? Who else is considered a protagonist? Alexis's brother? The fire shot guy? Almost forgot Aster Phoenix, he's ok I guess. The worst character is the clown that unfortunately survived his golem falling on him in Episode 1 or 2, and they thought it was a good idea to give him a mini-me clown for some reason.

Yugioh GX may have its issues and be borderline incomprehensible at times, but man, does it still have a special place in my heart. As someone who watched it not too long ago (with the first two seasons dubbed while the last two subbed, for obvious reasons), I adored it a ton and am glad to have finally watched it in full. The first two seasons are fine and quite entertaining, but it's the last two I enjoyed the most due to how huge the stakes were, the story being the darkest it's been yet, Yubel being an amazing villain and Judai getting some fantastic development. And then season 4, while a bit rushed, served as a great epilogue for the series by giving each major character their own mini-arc. I have tons more nostalgia for Duel Monsters, but GX is probably the series I'll look back on the most fondly, warts and all.
Also, while I enjoyed both the sub and dub, despite the latter butchering the story, sub OST>>>>>>dub OST any day of the week.

    • @Goblin_Hands
      @Goblin_Hands Před 2 lety

Weird, people would choose to watch ANY part of the Dub over the Sub especially knowing the last part is Sub only. As bad as Yu-Gi-Oh dub was at translating, it is still iconic and really good and entertaining; I saw GX as dubbed as possible thinking it would be the same, but it is not enjoyable in my mind, and feels like 4kids versions of shows like One Piece and Naruto, extremely obnoxious. The whole time I was hoping for more stuff from the original like more about the Gods reappearing and more scenes with Kaiba, even Zane was really cool but they really showed very little after he graduated, those are about the only parts I'd want to see Dubbed, even though I greatly prefer dubbed if it is tolerable (Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, DBZ, Bleach, One Piece-not 4Kids dub, Death Note, Cowboy, Shamploo, Berserk, Claymore, etc etc), GX is one I cannot recommend dubbed to anyone.
It's strange, because it's like the series is aimed at even younger audiences that the previous series; like Yu-Gi-Oh is good for everyone including adults, GX is good for 12 and under. Zexal and Arc V are aimed at 10 and under, that's how it feels when the cast gets younger, sounds younger, and the plots go nowhere, which is Season 1 GX, it just went nowhere until the Sacred Beasts, and then Season 2 kinda had something with the Society of Light, but it was really hard for me to care by then. 5D's however was a lot better in my opinion, despite not really explaining how we got there, it had some focus. I do like Season 4 GX, for me it wasn't rushed because I just wanted it to end, and the characters actually didn't sound obnoxious (because it was serious in the Sub).
If I had seen the Sub from the get go, there is a small chance I might have enjoyed GX.
