CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) battles stubborn Jen (Ziyi Zhang) on top of a bamboo forest.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee took a break from making Western period dramas to fashion this wild and woolly martial arts spectacular featuring special effects and action sequences courtesy of the choreographer of The Matrix (1999), Yuen Woo Ping. In the early 19th century, martial arts master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) is about to retire and enter a life of meditation, though he quietly longs to avenge the death of his master, who was killed by Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei). He gives his sword, a fabled 400-year-old weapon known as Green Destiny, to his friend, fellow martial arts wizard and secret love Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), so that she may deliver it to Sir Te (Sihung Lung). Upon arrival in Peking, Yu happens upon Jen (Zhang Ziyi), a vivacious, willful politician's daughter. That night, a mysterious masked thief swipes Green Destiny, with Yu in hot pursuit -- resulting in the first of several martial arts action set pieces during the film. Li arrives in Beijing and eventually discovers that Jen is not only the masked thief but is also in cahoots with the evil Jade. In spite of this, Li sees great talent in Jen as a fighter and offers to school her in the finer points of martial arts and selflessness, an offer that Jen promptly rebukes. This film was first screened to much acclaim at the 2000 Cannes, Toronto, and New York film festivals and became a favorite when Academy Awards nominations were announced in 2001: Tiger snagged ten nods and later secured four wins for Best Cinematography, Score, Art Direction, and Foreign Language Film.

I was a kid who wanted to fly and climb those trees just like these guys. My mom fooled me into believing that drinking a glass of milk everyday would give us that ability. I drank for years. Never flew.
You need to drink red bull man. It gives you wings.
His calcium content was through the roof tho
I guess it flew over your head though ironically lol.
If you were lactose? You'll take flight if you hold it in long enough.
That’s hilarious, this was one of my favorite movies as a kid too and I also thought that the flying was 100% real. 😂
One of the most peaceful fights I've ever seen, hands down.
totally agree
Peaceful yet powerful
And so beautiful
This was one of my childhood fantasies. To have those kind of skills.
venhar bantigue it has always been and still now
sakura li well I just lost my hope when suddenly I realized we don't have those kind of bamboos here..
So happy I know and seen this movie.
i thought it was possible when i watched it in cinema with my uncle and cousin. relly wanted to master those skills! 😁
Mine too! Sadly it's not realistic :(
Neo: I can fly
Li Mu Bai:...hold my tea.
🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂
🤌
This scene is totally gorgeous visually...
The bamboo forest, and the lake, yes!
Pffh what visuals? Good one.
I could never stop laughing lol
I remember watching this as a child at my grandparents house late at night. This scene will forever be etched in my memory.
Exactly same with me but in my parents house
Me too, but in a cinema with my parents! I'll forever be comparing this as a the gold standard, no CGI, just ropes & a directors wild imagination. How did they get it to look so beautiful?
true. i was in cinema with with uncle and cousin. this scene was the one i truly adore up to date!
Almost same experience to me also
Me too, I hated it.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how brilliant the score is.
Can we also take a moment and acknowledge how gorgeous the cinematography is in this scene?!
Most impressive thing? They really were up there in those trees. Suspended by wires, sure, but they were actually up there, in real trees.
You've read Ang's book?
It wasn’t trees. It was bamboo, a GRASS.
Thats what makes it magic.
@@keithwilson6060 cool
@@keithwilson6060 well a really big tree like grass that's for sure.
this movie is so beautiful it really didn't need a sequel at all
Aziz Tissaoui bro this movie is old I have it already
@GrantKP lol. Blade runner earned the title and prefix "successfull"?
I liked the sequel
Max Ranierus The sequel wasn’t half bad. Donnie Yen was amazing, as was Michelle Yeoh.
@@user-kz7wj5fl9r I agree. It was a little weird and over the top-ish at times, but the fights were still cool and so was the plot line.
Sometimes the gorgeous visuals and soothing music make me forget that this is actually a fight scene. What a unique way to film it
Is it really a fight scene if only one character is actually fighting?
I watched this with my parents when I was really young. I asked my mum "can people really do that?", and she said "yes". Took me until I was about 10 to realise they can't.
Poor guy
Hahaha
But they can! : ) I think that's a great reply. Perhaps your mum was referring to the astral, or who knows what some humans used to be capable of back in those times.
Lmao how ironic. I was really young when I seen this with my mom. Instead of asking her if people can really do this, I stated it as a fact. I told my mom "You know with enough training anyone can do this". She said "Oh wow I didn't know that". Took me years to realize she was playing along.
I have dreams like this but i can't fully lift off the ground and fly only float/glide
You can see the difference in attitude between the old master and the young, rash swordswoman. She tries to gain the higher ground; he falls, then kicks her off her perch. She tries to kick him off his perch; he just needs to leave, and she falls. She is charging, exerting, rushing, because she doesn't understand that actions lead to reactions. He understands, so he is actually freer of the need to act.
0:53 impressive slow-mo scene with emotions. captivating like a fluid poetry
Such a beautiful scene, it gives me goosebumps.
He doesn't flinch a millimeter at the end. He is so good he knows she won't strike, and she is disconcerted to realize that he CAN see into her heart and know she won't strike.
Yup….martial arts movies that gave these effects made me and my brothers jump across the couch…absolutely loved these movies. This is a cinematic masterpiece
1:53 the music and the visuals are so striking right here. Chokes me up every time. So magical.
Michelle Yeoh deliberately didn't work for a year before filming began so she could concentrate on training and learning Mandarin.
This is zhang ziyi in this scene lol
@@Kingsley266 they're asian, how can you tell the difference?
Their accents are still pretty bad...
Yeoh learned the script by rote, she never actually understood Mandarin.
@@dirdib69 what!! really? i thought she she speaks Mandarin..lol.
These fight scenes were so revolutionary and so well done for their time which make this film an absolute masterpiece
As a kid i was fascinated by the martial arts. As an adult i appreciate how the film told a story.
The most beautiful movie I've watched as a kid way back in 2003,sure I never understood the movie at that time but the fighting scenes and the legendary sharpness of the green destiny always made me want that sword so that I can cut through reality itself huhu, such a beautiful movie to this day- 2020 covid 19 era
The visuals in this scene were stunning this was one my favorite movies. It has a beauty to it.
masterpiece; the shot from 0:48 and onwards along with the music is excellent
Stunning cinematography
Graceful yet Powerful. Naughty yet Wisdom. Rebellious yet Disciplined.
Who has had dreams like this?
The most flexible, peaceful fight with one of the most brave expression on the fighters. The resistance by the girl and the perseverance by the teacher is an absolutely repelling scene...
I was watching movies like this when I was young rather than the thousand marvel superhero movies that they make every year now. So glad for it
Anyone else notice that at 0:20 it sounds like he's screaming WHAT? this has me dying
0:20 look for her Joker grin!!!
asking them to obey gravity is like asking Harry Poter stop using magic, this is Wuxia (martial arts fantasy) genre
I wish I saw this movie when it first came out. That would of been the viewing experience of a LIFETIME!!!
One of my favourite memories was seeing this film in the cinema back then.
Me too,...
It made me cry in theater. My Gf was shocked by that.
So poetic and beautiful
Just saw this movie for the first time a few days back and damn, what a fantastic movie. Can't believe I didn't see this earlier. Film making at its finest!!!
i love that hes not trying to do anything but train her and realize her potential.
The fact that this doesnt take physics seriously can be exempted because it was choreographed beautifully.
Nobody:
Me and my friends chasing each other in creative mode:
Panda on the 1st floor: "Hey! I'm having lunch here!"
I remember I was like 6 to 7 yrs old the first one I remember. And I was dancing around my old grandparents yard/but not there yard because dreams like weird. But still like the ninjas in this movie.
Everyone is taking about how beautiful and cool this scene is, and ignore what really means behind. This guy is basically a kung fu master who hides all his emotions, and the girl is young and bold. That’s why they’re talking about true heart while fighting. Lee wants Yu and her young braveness. It’s romantic, in a Kung Fu way.
Insightful!
“In a Kung Fu way” 😂😂😂
He had no romantic feeling towards her whatsover....wot. that was a seperate line with Shu....
This is an incorrect interpretation. This isn't romantic at all. He says it himself, he always wanted a student worth of the Wudang secrets. He is trying to convince her to abandon her master and let him bring her to greatness. She's good, he knows that, but she isn't perfect. She loses to both Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien in this film. Overall, he's trying to save her from Jade Fox.
He sees her talent potentially being wasted.
To me, this is the real live action Dragon Ball. All the chi powers in the movie are what toriyama based the manga characters on. Love it.
Roger Ebert perfectly observed this scene when he reviewed it on his show at the time. He said that unlike so many other films that use such lofty special effects trying to make unrealistic action look real, this movie embraced the whimsical side of it. It's messy and fantastical in the best ways.
such a wonderfully realistic version of a chinese fantasy this movie mezmorized me as a kid.
Realistic? This movie is so stupid because of scenes like this. I can't believe it won 4 Academy Awards.
@@goranmilic442 i think he means because they use practical effecs such as wires instead of CGI, this movie is awesome and deserves awards
That's some amazing chakra control by Chow Yun Fat.
This is truly an epic fight scene and matching background
1:07-He was smiling...feel so glad,in a amazing cradle.....Also laugh at himself, only remember grab a parachute at the moment she dissapear from his sight
The scenery an ambiance is STILL amazing after all that years.
If you're looking to do Obi-Wan and Anakin in the prequels, this is the appropriate kind of confrontation.
Oscar didnt deserved this great Movie.......ever made...
A Pinnacle of cinematography.
I remember having goosebumps all over my body
I was still a grader when I watch this scene stitched in my mind till now, theres just this harmony and calmness about this scene
this whole movie is intoxicating
did anyone else watch this in a dollar theater in Aberdeen? it was a rainy matinee 2001, Sunday, March 18th.
Simply a lovely scene
My favourite scene of this great movie
Their kung fu level has reached to a level where their weight becomes lighter than a mosquito
they are lotr elves
Majestic scene even to this day
I really love that background music...
Excellent..
One of my fave best chinese movie during childhood
The force is strong with this one
This is what happens to me when I’m dreaming sometimes.
One of the best movies I've ever seen
00:53-She feel pleasant inside, even still not sure what it is.Not realize what's inside, but keep chilling.....act like nothing,it is best way to keep herself safe.
Chinese action heros running across tree tops is the Asian equivalent of wild west cowboys shooting without ever having to reload
I love how you know this is physically impossible to do, i mean theyre flying on wires pretending to balance on bamboo stalks, but they take it so seriously and it’s such a serious film that you cant help but still have that suspension of disbelief.
"Suspension"...I see what you did there.
Are they using chi to lower their gravity? I used to have a reoccurring dream about floating like that.
I would love to watch this movie on an IMAX screen
Such a sublime scene.
"What do YOU know about seeing a true heart" beautiful line 😊😊 its "Let me TEACH you " not let me annoy your ass 'till you can't take it anymore .
Ok hidden Porche lover
What a poetic scene...
Gravity be like.. 'Am I a joke to you'
One of my favorite games as a kid was Legend of Kage. This scene always reminds of that game.
Jesus, was there anyone prettier on earth than she was in this movie?
Could be so ridiculous but is so magical
Got me some tree bamboo for the garden after seeing this movie.
This movie is now 20 years old!
lol makes metrix look like child's play
Same fight choreographer.
Perhaps The Matrix was a Westernized version of this movie.
@@perfectsplit5515 the Matrix was inspired by anime
@@trchbrr who cares about some lame animes?
@@simon4581 apparently the directors of matrix cared
00:47He keep utelize leaves and branch in forest as block so she won't find out his confusion...he pulled a few branch deliberately cover his head,so unfortunately he can't close his eyes...unavoidable keep his eyes open if he still want to live.
She was super duper Hard-Headed !
I remember this scene as a kid
This scene is awesome!
It's a masterpiece
This reminds me of going 2c Double/Triple Bill movies with Bruce Lee and Silver Fox, aah memories!🥳🤍🇯🇲
It’s a beautiful scene. Forever burned in my memory.
amazing fight scene.
love from Bangladesh.
i always fly like this in my dream. first time i watched this movie made it so related and insane
Not necessarily this movie, but one of the funniest things I rember was going to the movie "Hero" with my then-girlfriend. Shortly into the movie, she leans into me and says "I don't get it...people can't fly."
Oh, well that's why you're my PREVIOUS girlfriend.
Such zen
Damn. Wish I could walk on air.
It must have been really tough to do this scene... The wiring skills required to do this together with all the branches everywhere and making the actors stand as properly as possible on the branches... Incredible work.
cinematic poetry
I miss early 00s so much..
On all that I am and all the I own. I have been having dreams like this. my whole life.. that I can defy gravity like that!!! In my dreams I'm either in nature or a weird public place and I use my ability to .do What , I call sky dancing!! I cried first time seeing this movie.. just because I knew someone else has obviously had the same type of dream. And in my dreams it's normally just me having fun. But just knowing somewhere someone else had this power in that mind has given me comfort 😌! They r always the best because I just run and jump and the float dance only need to touch something every now and then to push off!!! NB'S my whole life I have had dreams where I could do that! I hate waking up from those dreams because they r soo much fun and always feel so real.!
they are using the chakra perfectly
Appreciate the last fantasy movie without CGI animation
The trees look beautiful
She fell in love right here for mu bai
This movie all over world no.1
Oh yeah yeah amazing scene
Anyone else see the lightsaber in his hand at 1:21? I mean, I
know it’s the sun’s glimmer, but still...
