so @1:57 you mentioned the apartment was Leela’s but then Axel gets the better lighting and more permanent set up, despite Leela requesting more light for her area, it’s her flat, and somehow her space is the flexible set up (feels like she didn’t get prioritise enough)… I find that interesting. Is it because Leela’s time spent at home is less and so Axel’s space may be prioritised? I don’t quite understand the prioritisation here.
I agree that the redesign was excellent, but it also occurred to me that Axel's workspace was taken much more seriously than Lilla's. He has a motorized standing desk, she has a crank. He has a swivel chair, she has a dining chair. And she will need to keep her desk clean if they will use it for dining and games.
I agree and thought of exactly the same thing.
I was thinking this too, it actually made me really uncomfortable how her workspace was treated as an afterthought even though it was the ENTIRE point of the brief. In the end, she doesn't even get much sunlight with this new design anyway. Her desk and workspace are forced into flexibility as though her job only exists when it's not disturbing anything else, and as though it matters less. There's a lot of unconscious sexism in the design and it bothers me.
Adding on to this, it's making me kind of mad how much space and attention was given to his *hobbies* (which weren't even explicitly stated/part of the brief) over her literal *job*. Ffs.
Agreed! I’d switch the position of her desk and the couch, and put the TV on a swivel wall mount above the plant.
Yeah esp after hearing it was originally Lila's apartment 1:53, but now it looks more like mainly axel's and lila is just... temporarily there.
I get that she used to be a pastry chef but now that she's going to do remote work she needs equal treatment in terms of "office space"
I would have switched the two desks. The female said she specifically wanted more light. And typically when gaming or watching TV, you want to avoid glare from the sun. It would also allow the TV/ monitor to be visible from both the bed and the couch. Based on the way their current TV was positioned, they clearly watch TV from the bed too.
Agreed. She doesn’t seem to have been listened to. She once had a desk, now she has to share her workspace with a dining table. Even the TV is given over to boyfriend’s gaming. It was once her apartment so this feels like she’s being pushed out of the space.
Twin work desks could have run under the window and given over more space to a good bed set up.
The desk can be moved around like he said.

In the area under the air conditioner unit, I would have placed a pull-down Murphy bed which allows the items on the desk to stay put without moving them. Then his gaming/work desk would have been attached to the wall that becomes the bed. This would have freed up a huge amount of space in the small apartment and it would look stylish as well.
Totally. I look most forward to see how he’s gonna get more warm natural light for Lilla’s workspace, but her need seems to be put at the bottom of the priorities in final layout. 😩
Esp the tall cabinet between the two desks is even blocking more light and makes her area looks depressing.
A “movable” desk is not gonna justify that, cuz move to where?
The other areas seem all occupied and being assigned with their own functionalities.
Plus I assume a work desk will at least needs to reach for plugs, even she moves in order to get light, the only area left is in the middle of the room, leaving her with cords pulling n crossing through the floor.
I don’t think he knows the major issue when having a monitor for both TV n computer screen. This is fine when you live with yourself. But imagine the guy is still left with some work to finish (or he’s in the middle of gaming?) but the other one wants some TV time?
Now the two ppl’s TV time is gonna solely depends on the guy’s schedule, which makes the girl living like she can’t be in charge of her own activities.
The design didn't solve Nina's issue about not having natural light in her work area. Putting a bed in front of storage and having to move it to access the storage is not practical. With the new design, the space still suffers from the mixing of workspace and relaxation space. These need to be separated. Additionally, the design fails to provide storage for hanging garments. By moving Nina's desk next to the window along the wall opposite the other desk, you are solving the light issue and creating a separation between the workspace and the relaxation area. L-shaped cabinetry could be installed along the wall where Nina's desk is currently located to separate the workspace from the other part of the room and to provide storage for hanging garments and other tall household items, in addition to creating a concealed place for a TV. I like the idea of the storage on the wall opposite the window. For sleeping, I would utilize a sofa bed on the wall currently occupied by the bed because it doubles as a couch and a bed.

Lmao, add also the horrendous bed space with a bed that looks uncomfortable AF and needs folded everynight, that somehow covers the wardrobe space needed, all separated by a hospital curtain in case you want to roleplay recovering from surgery
Love the effort you put into Axel's corner, would've loved to have seen the same if not more effort for Lilla's since she had made some actionable requests for her workspace, such as it being brighter.

Why isn't the design for Lilla's work area exactly like Axel's and also located at the window end of the room, but on the opposite wall from Axel's desk (where the sofa is). They would work back-to-back in equal work areas and light. To open up the living area at the other end with the big storage wall, replace both the bed and current sofa with a new L shaped sleeper sofa --there are plenty of those at Ikea. The big movie screen can go up on the opposite wall (where her desk was located to start). That creates an open social area near the entry door and an office space at the far end of the room that does not block the light. Done!

because half of the apartment would be two cubicles with the other half not being being enough to accommodate their other needs. its a studio, they need some interchangeable furniture to meet their other needs. Axels half doubles as a living room to chill at.
I would make some slight changes to your plans -
1. This might be quite drastic, but I would get rid of the couch. I don't quite see why it's that important to keep - Axel and Lila can sit on their bed if they want to be comfy and on their armchairs if they want to sit down. For having friends over - see my idea down below ;)
2. Lila wanted a bright workspace - so I'd place her desk closer to the window. I think the two of them working back to back would be nice, as they would also both have their own wall space to personalize (with frames, wall-mounted monitors, peg-boards etc.)
3. As the couch is now gone, Lila and Axel would have enough space for a full size bed. I'd place the bed on the right wall so that the foot of the bed would be close to the door. Additionally, I would opt for a bed with storage underneath, like Ikea's Nordli
4. Curtains and Rugs: I'd put a rug next to the bed to make the "chill/sleep" space more comfy. e.g. Ikea's Tiphede (15€). I'd also go for white/beige curtains instead of Daniel's black ones- personally i just think it makes a space more friendly and welcoming.
5. I would include a wall-mounted TV on the left wall, so that Axel and Lila can comfortably watch TV from their beds.
6. As an alternative for the sofa, I would suggest to put an additional cozy armchair on the right side next to the bed. As this would be in between the bed and the desk, you would have enough space to make it feel like a nice reading nook.
7. For having friends over, I would suggest getting 2 stools or fold out chairs. When they're not being used, I would store them away in the wall storage and get them out when friends are coming over. Then you have 5 chairs + the bed to sit on when having guests over. The two desks could be pushed together to create a generous dining table. As the TV is wall-mounted, you can watch it comfortably from any position.

I really like your ideas! Plus, something I've seen in someone's appt. was having a screen (you could roll up for axmple) and a projector instead of a TV. :)
using your mattress as a couch is a good way to ruin your mattress. and your back.
@@ge2719 Also, for a raft of reasons - including sleep hygiene - psychologically I think it's important to have a clear distinction between leisure and bed.
@@ge2719 Some convertible beds are quite sturdy, I'm using one for more than ten years with no ill effects on my back or the bed. But if someone is very delicate they can also use a mattress topper on it and hide it with the rest of bedding when they have guests.

Agreed, if he is into gaming he probably prefers a darker atmosphere anyway. so placing his computer by the window, would just make him draw the curtains anyway, stealing more of her light. Also, why does he have a window and a lamp and she only second hand light? where is her lamp?
He probably has a bigger display so they will use this display for watching movies from the couch
I mean we don't know what job does she do what spaces does she need how do they split the rent so whose appartment is it what is her setup and what is his setup. It is not the job of the interior designer to judge this

Same thing I thought! This replicated the old layout just adding some closed-off storage and design features.

you do not want your only window to be covered with a computer and desk. the architect did the best with what he had to work with.
And a full size bed with under storage. The tiny sofa is the thing least needed in that space. The designer epic failed not providing a proper sized bed.

This episode makes me think it's better to stay single. Like it was originally the girls apartment but the focus was mostly on the guy. He has more dedicated space to him than she does, oh sure it doubles as a TV but that means she would have to ask for permission to use it so as not to disturb his gaming. Her work space has to be more versatile and be shared more with not only the boyfriend but guests as well. She also gets a less comfortable chair for work.
Literally, it's like it's not even her apartment anymore. She's an afterthought in her own space. It's sad.

@@JoachimPersonalAccount Chicken and egg - maybe she would work longer hours if she had a proper workspace. And within a home it doesn't seem right to assign and withdraw privileges based on earnings - it's a form of financial control and manipulation that creates discord at best and is abusive at worst. Either way we can't assume whether that is true or not. The only thing we know is that this is a failed brief, and the woman has lost the greater part of her home.

Just because it wouldn’t work for you, doesn’t mean the setup is automatically bad. Plus, it’s not like women don’t do it too. It’s very common for a woman to move into a man’s house/apartment and “redecorate” to the point that he has to have a “man cave”. AKA the only place in the house where he gets to have any input and all of the things he cares about is crammed into (usually) a single room. Despite the fact that statistically speaking, he contributes the most financially to the home. Thats the point the other guy was trying to make. It’s not financial manipulation to expect a share proportional to your contribution. In what other context would you even think of an argument like that? I think to *expect* more than you put in (in all areas of life) is selfish and lazy. Also If she really wanted to put in some OT, I don’t think a chair would be the deciding factor lol.
Actually, I came to the comment section to see if anyone agrees that this bed solution isn't suitable for two persons. However instead l recognized the imbalance between the two work spaces. So I thought about a whole other solution:
Why avoiding the office look? Embrace it. I would put two ergonomic desk setups back to back in front of the window. So that, they can't see each others monitors and have the window to their side. And on the other side they have a wooden partition element. Something that has closed storage on the bottom half and on the top half something like vertical blinds to regulate the view to the desk setups and regulate the light. On top of the storage goes a TV which additionally partially blocks the view to the desk setups. Keep in mind that this partition is only as broad as the desks. Now they would need a sofa and a bed. For this I suggest a low profil sofa in front of the partition and a murphy bed rigth behind the sofa. The murphy bed could be opened above the sofa in the evenings and closed other times. So it would also be easier to entertain guests when needed. Needles to say that the murphy bed should go on the opposite wall to the window. Next to it floor to ceiling storages. Now you can also implement a coffe table, plants, smaller storage solutions, additional light sources etc to the remaining space.
Hope I could paint the picture for you. These were just the concept.
Did you consider putting both desks near the window? Opposite each other on each wall. This keeps the working space separate from the living area and maximises the living room area also.

@@hurka.design As a graphic designer who spends their day staring at a monitor for work, having a monitor in front of a window sounds like an awful idea to me. Having that much light shining into my eyes while also trying to color correct, etc. is a recipe for disaster. So, too, is having the light coming in from behind and shining on the screen. It's much better to have the monitor perpendicular to the big window. That being said, her workspace could have been mirrored from his on the other wall.

It was my first thought, like this guy did nothing for layout just replaced with pretty things and make them work more, arranging the bed everyday it's a drag.

Probs none, this would cost a lot of money for a couple using recycled pallets for a bed
I'd make a guess that they would at least implement the storage wall, as it gives so much storage, while taking up little space, physically and visually, and utilising space that was otherwise not used well.
Double daybeds only have VERY thin mattresses. They might be fine for kids, but I think they'd damage most adults' backs over the long term. I'd have had less storage on the wall and a proper bed. You could have put storage underneath. Otherwise, great job.
I guess a revolving sofa bed mechanisms would be another sufficient option; but as explained in the video both other options are quite pricy in comparison.
I love my storage drawers under my bed. I still them long after the watered quit. Still have it, in fact.

@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 i raised by bed up about 50cm and built one giant drawer that pulls out from the front... only problem was i just used it for storing things that i really shouldn't have bothered keeping.
Gotten around to clearing it out recently and now building a loft bed with a computer desk area underneath so i can free up floor space in the rest of the room.
in a room with a bed, the bed is taking up such a massive amount of floor space it really is crazy to take up all that space, and have zero storage or usable space underneath.

I did a similar wood slat wall recently, and found some easy to install acoustic slat panels from WoodUpp that look great and are easy to put up. Did a lot to change the space and make the acoustics better. They're in Europe. UK, and North America.

It doesn't fix the light issue, Axel got the better chair, desk while Lila has to live with the space left, she has a non-electric standing desk that doubles as a living room table and did not get an ergonomic chair (because Axel already had one?! WTF m8! What kind of reason is that!) although it was clearly said at the start that both of them work from home now.
Just feels like you prioritized his needs over hers (hopefully not intentionally) and you should probably think about how that happened.
Addition: The fact this video is still up (in its original form without a note or anything about the problem) indicates he still doesn't think there is anything wrong with it. The only reason someone would do this is that the person (at least subconsciously) thinks the needs of a man a greater than the needs of a woman. (-> Patriarchy)
Please reflect on this one, design impacts people's lives and as an architect you have to think about the values your design transports.
Generally, it was a bad design. Both desks belong by the windows, the couch in the middle, and the bed remaining in the darkest part of the room. He started of strong with the wall storage, but failed to improve the actual function of the space from then on, just making a prettier more aesthetic version of the existing dysfunctional layout.
I agree. He also made some comments where he was very defensive about it and disagreed that his design was unequal, but I can’t find them, so he must have deleted them. Shame that he didn’t put in a disclaimer or something.
I'd eliminate the sofa and create for her the same workstation at the window that Axel has. Add the same side tower cupboard for Lila so that each have somewhere for their person stuff. Get both of them headphones so that they don't disturb each other's business/gaming activities. Next, I'd replace the daybed to something more comfortable that converts into a comfortable double bed. Those cushion look uncomfortable for both sitting, sleeping and other activities ;) they choose. Hang the TV on the wall where Lila's desk was. FYI: Axel is not going to give up his gaming chair no matter how much you beg.
Didn't he completely ignore the main problem they requested help for - to make Lilla's desk space more light? And he put so much more effort into Axel's desk setup... Failure in my eyes
I agree! There are quite a lot of comments on this problem but it seems the designer doesn’t think that it’s a big issue:/ I think that it’s a bit unfair on Lila, though, and definitely gave much more attention to Axel than they asked for in the first place.
I'm no expert but there are a lot of issues that I think could've been avoided. All this focus on aesthetic but not practicality. He games but his desk is by the bright window? Her work space is still blocked, so I would switch them. The back cabinets are OK but having to move a whole bed..it should've been a Murphy bed or just remove the left cabinet altogether to make room to tuck the daybed in that corner. Hopefully the daybed will have a good supportive mattress. A rolling folding table could double as a dining/coffee table be stored next to the sofa so she can have a full time desk. Lastly they need ergonomic chairs, a gamer is NOT tossing that big comfy chair for that little one you suggested. Plus the new tv can just be wall mounted.
genuine question, but why keep the bed on that side of the room?? Also she's the one working from home, her workspace should have gotten significantly more priority over the hobby of her partner.....
not to mention it's her apartment, but now there's not a single part of it that counts as her own space, it's mostly prioritising her boyfriend's needs:/
My solution would be to give symmetrical work spaces on either walls of the window so that they get equal natural light and dont get in each others space, keep the closet in the same wall where you kept it, provide a sofa/bed convertible while still leaving room to open the closet and give a tv opposite the sofa/bed so that she can watch tv while he is working and get one of those convertible coffe/dining table for infront of the sofa/bed, while still using the 600mm closet with a mirror on its front to divide the work and living area..
Hi I would just use a light color for the curtains and use mirrors doors for the cabinet in the back as it is facing the window to bring more light and give the visual illusion of more space.
What about patterns? I have some very light weight drapes that let light in, but aren't heavy. I use them w shears. Boscov's had them at a great price. But I think so did BB n B.
Finally an *actually* small studio apartment! There are so many videos around of people sharing how they manage to live in a tiny apartment and then the size is like 40 or 45 sqm :D
My partner and I had a similarly small studio for a long time and it really forces you to use space in a highly planned way, especially if you want to keep it looking clean.
This a perfect example on why architects should not do interior design. 1) did not do what the client asked for 2) barely changed the obviously bad setup 3) did not value the work setup
I would & some mirrors on the wall storage to allow for the light to reflect more into the space by the door, and to give an illusion that there is a window on that side, and more space.
This channel is awesome and is giving me so many ideas.
I like things overall but 1.) wouldn't putting something in front of the air unit limit air flow. And 2.) Two people don't usually fit in a daybed. Trust me I've tried. It seems like a good idea but maybe has usage issues.
Edit: upon watching this video again, I realized that the daybed is one of those rollout daybeds that can expand to a full. That's probably fine for this layout in this case.
Oh the couple was surely surprised about this layout. Very pretty pictures. Just a to recap, was this a office space for your self and a assistant?
Nice refresh, BUT I would rather change the following aspects..
1. Not use two sofa like furniture pieces at the same time, but instead either use a sofa with sleeping function or a bed/mattress placed against or hidden in the wall during the day...
2. Place the sofa in direction of the window for (hopefully) a more beautiful thing to look at than the desk. Window blinds can be used as screen with a beamer (buy second hand, cheaper). Create a "living room area" by placing furniture in a certain way, to improve coziness. An extendable sofa can be used or the short sofa in combination with a stool for example.
3. Place the second desk closer to the window, for ex. in the right corner of the window. The movable table is still a great idea!

That idea of using tall Ikea kitchen cabinets will actually come handy at organizing our home office. We keep all our gadget’s boxes (in case we need to resell them for cheap when we upgrade and since we move so much)

Why would you set a sofa AND a sofa that turns into bed? Just use the bed as a Sofa, hang the TV where her desk is and put her desk oposite to his. You can frame the TV with more storage and get a foldable table under the TV
…and then good luck working in such setup 😊 Have you ever tried working remotely sitting opposite from each other? If you have meetings online it’s so uncomfortable and exposing. I’d rather work from kitchen then constantly be on the camera to entertain colleagues of my husband. And no, zoom backgrounds don’t really help, they recognize and show another human through those images.

Both desks should be by the window, facing each other and the bookshelf should be used as the separator between the desks'' area and the living-sleeping room area. The girl literally asked for more light and what she got was a seat next to that big enclosed wardrobe or whatever.Also, the AC unit needs to be open since it pulls air from the top and disperses it from the bottom, also it should be accessible for regular maintenance which is twice per year.
Removing the shelf already added a tonne of light to her space.
But I would say a mirror either on the kitchen cabinet doors, or something would help reflect some light so that she can look outside as well.
I reckon if she had a slightly bigger desk so that she isn't completely hidden by the shelf separator would be good but that depends on whether there is a hand crank desk on wheels that suits that brief.

Besides all the other excellent comments about the inferior second desk setup, I feel you've never worked in a shared (home) office space. That seperator with the shelf is absolutely necessary to reduce conflict when two people work that close together, The absolute lack of seperation will be a major issue. At the very least, given the curtain's already existing dominance as a primary feature, it'd need an axtension to the bed-curtain to be able to use it to seperate out the two work areas. That shallow cabinet is not going to do the trick.
Axel Axel Axel... he’s the one that got a fancy stand up desk, so swap out the chairs. He gets the kitchen chair, she gets the swivel chair. Since the slotted accent wall is hidden behind Axels big screen TV/monitor, move it toward the entryway.

The open stand was making Lila's space dark for her work but the kitchen cabinets didn't? Why does not put her desk on the opposite side of his desk and both would have light to work with? Video games and computer screen or tv don't need natural light! Maybe he is suggesting to have friends to play games comfortably and Lila's needs could be put on second thoughts!
The day bed might be a conceptually convenient, but not comfortable.

That daybed means they sleep on different heights. It’s not a great solution for a couple.
A Murphy bed would be ideal but it couldn’t be put into the kitchen cabinets as you mentioned.
There were some great ideas and the pallet is great. The functionality of pieces however doesn’t work the way it’s described though, which is unfortunate.

Stunning job. I've lived in a studio apartment with my partner but when covid hit we knew we had to move - I commend this couple a lot. This redesign gives the space a much more peaceful vibe, might benefit the relationship as well :') well done!

Wow this looks so cool! I think you did a great job with the re-design. I looks much more modern and bigger.Everything fits well. I think i personally would have put both of the working spaces close to the window, to seperate work from sleeping and living and to get an equal amount of light. But I guess for some couples it could be more distracting having their desks too close to each other. I understand that aswell. Hope this series continues :D

In a space this tiny the only real solution is to buy a good quality sofabed that functions as a bed and sofa and have the computers facing opposite eachother.. that way you could even add a tv for a living room experience or create an elevated loft area and have the computers underneath it..

Yess hope to see this become a series
1. The guy who is gaming/doing music does not need close access to the windows. She does since she does most of the writing.
2. Curtains for dividers are a must. On the windows of a small apartment? Not so much
3. Instead of the couch, both offices can be close to the windows (back to back)
4. It is clear here that the design was highly skewed in favor of the male gamer of the couple, without actually enhancing the apartment at all for neither of them.
5. The only good idea here is the storage in the darker side of the apartment and the curtain divider (not well placed tough). Hiding the AC was unecessary and time and resource intensive

i really feel like you did lilla's desk and workspace dirty in comparison to axels :( she specifically wanted more light and also, even though it didnt need to feel like an office she works at her desk presumably all day, how is replacing her chair with an upholstered one a good idea? even moreso with a moveable desk, the chair doesnt have wheels too? i loved the rest of the design though

That second curtain rack looked a bit like a hospital room lol but it did make sense as they might need to sleep while the other person is awake/watching things, etc.

So, Lilla's apartment gets her the smaller & less sophisticated office components? Because? Maybe her boyfriend who would like a standing desk can have something put into the kitchen? THIS is bias towards women not being considered to be the one to be prioritized to meet her career goals. Those bank of wall cabinets can have a long hanging plant bracket put on the back of a unit for long hanging dresses, which women in Hungary still wear regularly and needs to be accommodated for properly. A guitar can go on brackets on a wall up out of the way. A form of lovely art.

I'd be interested to know what the kitchen, and bathroom look like. He said that she wanted more light, however the tall unit took that away. As has been said before, a bed with storage underneath would have been more functional. Otherwise, I do like the addition of texture, and a few pictures on the wall would be nice.

Daniel I love what you did with the cabinetry and feature wall. So clever and custom looking. I do feel that having the sofa and the daybed along the same wall makes the room look like an office, and that particular curtain rail/curtain around the daybed looks like a curtain around a hospital bed. Perhaps just one sofa bed would have worked better ? I would have liked to somehow see some horizontal lines to break up the long lines of the room.

Looks better, alright. However, it's not a good idea to have full length curtains covering the wall-mounted radiator, trapping all that precious heat behind and diverting it out the window. A case of form over function that would lead to a serious critique if this was a college project.
I'd keep the curtains as window dressing but use blinds for actually covering the windows (and avoiding covering the radiator)
This is a really good point! Combining them with a blind would be a nice solution.

I like this video in that it's great to see this come to life, but I'm finding myself actually ANGRY that you basically recreated the same problem with Lilla's workspace being an afterthought. As an architect, you would've been paid to just snazz everything up and solve nothing.

I was stunned by how beautiful the apartment was after you finished. It was so pure and simple. You are an incredibly talented person.
Take a hard look at the difference between the two work spaces. Him: Window, comfortable, wheeled chair, more space, dedicated worktop, motorized standing desk. Her: Still no sunlight, static side chair, less space, hand crank height changer, used also for dining, etc.
This architect needs to take a long hard look in the mirror; he clearly has some hidden misogyny to work on.
He seemed to cater more towards the male client. The female client was an after thought. Her stuff and location was all second dibs. And the fact there wasn’t a dedicated actual bed made it look to officy waiting lounge. Did not like.

A very good redesign of this space... one thing I do notice is too much use of white. It makes this feel more like a business than a home... the end cabinet wall would be really nice with a warm soft yellow.... and that would help in dealing with your client's desire for more light. I notice in so many videos that I see since the pandemic, white wall after white wall. One of the thing I really love about the things like this I see from the UK is the use of rich color in living spaces...

@Canal Street bad chair, bad desk, 'flexibility' meaning it's not even a permanent usable space, instead it needs to be kept clear to double as a dining table, etc. etc. No natural light, right next to the door, it was treated as an afterthought when it was supposed to be the main part of the brief.
