  • In this video, we tour the incredible 28sqm (301sqft) apartment of architect Douglas Wan. The Melbourne apartment was originally constructed in the 1950's as housing for nurses. It’s now been completely reimagined for modern times and transformed into a clever small studio.

For Douglas, this was an opportunity to develop a small living space that would perfectly fit his needs and lifestyle. Attracted to simple living and a self described monastic lifestyle, he wanted to create a place where he could be a part of the city, yet also retreat from it. He ventured to carry out an architectural experiment and find out what was possible in his own small home.

The result is a micro apartment which is as clever as it is simple. One which utilises the entire space, while remaining open and light. It’s rustic history is celebrated, yet also contrasted with the modern elements. Most importantly, it’s a wonderful home.
Enjoy the full video tour of this very special tiny apartment.

The fake extra enthusiasm comes off as fake interest. The house owner shows that it is not necessary to talk like that to show your passion on a base level, but I'm sure it is an important tool for having mass-appeal used by the host, after all he has to guide the conversation and compensate anything he feels that wasn't explicit enough for the average audience.

9:35 I really like what he said here. Like imagine normally tiny houses ‘prepared’ for having several guests would have identical chairs hidden away and you’d have to move a lot of things around to pull them out. I like how he’s honest like “Yeah the bed stays out most of the time”, cause many tiny houses look really cool and minimalistic but you have to pull the bed in and out every night to have a living room and it doesn’t seem like much when just seeing a video, but I’d imagine it would get tiresome to have to do that every day. So yeah, it’s nice to see a tiny space like this one and his take on “People are more adaptable than things”.

This might be the most beautiful micro studio apartment I've ever seen. So brilliantly engineered, spacious, and comfortable. It doesn't feel like much is sacrificed either -- and best of all, this feels like something that could be expanded at-large (ideally affordably!) especially in larger cities. Personally, I'd try to halve the length of the platform and install a murphy bed on the other side. This is one of my all-time favorite micro studio designs. Thank you for sharing!

The alcove for the shoes is an Asian thing. Asian people always leave their footwear before entering a house. They do this because they believe that the outside is dirty while the inside is clean, and they shouldn't be mixed. Point is, I believe that the alcove for the shoes just came to him instinctively because he's Asian.

Not everyone would design it so flawlessly...I'm sure you missed it but he said that was a practicality thing due to the plumbing fixtures, it's very hard to hear. Architects think of solutions to problems, and anyone designing such a tiny space would have an issue with shoe storage/a welcome mat. It's so easy to say "That's the obvious thing to do" when design is done well, but it takes actual vision to think of new solutions, not just asian blood.

This architect compose his sentences with simple words but the way he constructs them to generate meaning is just... brilliant.

I've never been interested in architecture, interior decorating, or anything to do with living spaces, but this has been inspiring. I think this has started something wonderful (not to mention expensive and time consuming lol)

You can tell he reads everyday. He probably reads all sorts of genres too. The way he articulates what he’s trying to say is done in the most efficient way possible. There are no “likes” “um’s” or “literally’s”.

10:40 “uh” stop making this guy seem like he’s superior to everyone. Maybe he’s better than you, but architects can’t compete with programmers like myself. We are superior to these lazy bums

Absolutely. But our politicians keep selling huge acres of potential populous lands to millionaires and companies that reduce people to living in well.. cramped cities and suburbs

Honest, practical, functional. Some architecture goes beyond that and satisfies aesthetic more.
