I grew up catching white sturgeon here in the Columbia of the Pacific Northwest and they also just stay in the river, if you go out to the coast you can find some green sturgeon in the tributaries that go back and forth fresh to salt. But I've seen old photos of white sturgeon 22 feet long from back in the day!

That being said, the fisher's catch and see more fish than a sports fisher, aquarium collector (who prefer small fishes) or even a scientist. So, there could be some giants out there. Also, many protected and community conservation areas have been created, which preserve the fish fauna in them thereby allowing the fish to grow and that can have a positive effect on their size. But Mahaseers are generally larger than Rohu or Catla.

I'm a river monster. I'm eleven feet tall and 680 lbs. I haven't eaten a human yet, but don't push me. I mostly like eating cow, pig, sheep, and chickens, but now and again I will take salmon, lobster, and shrimp when I can get it. I will also accept vegetative matter, but I'm somewhat picky about that, eating it only when it's very fresh, ripe, and in season.

I have to say, I've fished for sharks from piers and the beach as well as large catfish in North America but the most terrifying river monster is not on this list. It reaches minimum lengths of 15 ft and 2000 or more pounds, and its found all over North America. Boaters, swimmers, and especially kayakers are meanced every year by karens and kevins in motor boats, sometimes drunk and sometimes not but always entitled and some times dangerously so.
