  • Childhood obesity is becoming the #1 preventable disease amongst children in the world. Despite this, the needle continues to move in the wrong direction. Why? And how can we fix it?

    This guy gets me. Something that has aggravated me is the specialisation of sports. I don't play a sport because it's too late for me. When I was 8 or 9 and tried to play netball I got bagged. My 'friend' even called me fat. When I tried dancing I was self conscious around these kids who were somehow professional at 8, and good luck finding a beginners class. I even remember in school PE classes, because I was a bit bigger people would call me out, not saying I was fat but just saying dumb stuff. It. Sucks. Because it didn't matter how much fun I had. I wasn't allowed to have fun. That needs to change.

      Unorganised play is so good for kids. We used to play ball with the neighbors all the time when I was little. Town leagues were fun, too. But just playing to play was the best!

    An important message that everyone needs to hear. This problem still exists in our communities today and will continue to until we take some serious action.

    I grew up playing softball, doing gymnastics and ballet, yet I spent a lot of time playing my Super Nintendo. Mostly that was for after dark and on rainy days but I successfully split my time between physical activity and the screens. Maybe it was much more "boring" in the 80s and 90s. I've always loved physical activity and still in my 30s I am more active than anyone I know. I don't understand how people would rather sit all day. We are made to move, as you say.

      I do not go out because it's hot here,even in the night,But the weather in the US is generally pleasant,why wouldn't you go out?

    • @Red88Rex
      @Red88Rex Před 7 lety +1

      It wholly depends on where you live in the US and what time of year. I live in Ohio, so I experience both extremes of hot and cold. I'm by the lake too so the humidity is bad. Right now it's been 75F at night, plus near 100% humidity and it is miserable. I have been cycling indoors the past week, I tried to run the other night and I was soaked in sweat and had to stop every 1/4 or so to cool off. I really need to get a treadmill for those times.
      Also I still go during winter, but not under 20F. My throat will hurt once the air gets too cold. But I do make every effort to be outside when I work out, it's the best.

    • @carlidoepke5131
      @carlidoepke5131 Před 5 lety +2

      Haha, "generally pleasant." The Midwest is generally pleasant maybe 15% of the year. The other 85, it's either freezing or miserably humid. But can't complain much with air and heat, though. Very thankful for that.

    My cousins are morbidly obese. Have been since toddlerhood. They are so damn active! And they eat so healthily - it costs nearly $1000 a week to feed them and their parents. The problem is the quantity. Since she was two, my cousin has had bigger meals than her father. I wish I could do something

    in my country PE education is a one of core subject require for us to get a higher mark in order to enter a great university...for example if u re an athlete, he/she must get a great opportunity to qualify themselves for a great uni or college...but if u re not an active student, u will get less benefit than students who re great at sports..but yeah education is the most important too...the thing is u need to get a good results of exam and PE education

    What an important message you have to share Matt! How strange to find ourselves in the Western world struggling with such an issue, with all the tools, technology and wealth available around us. Physical literacy IS important for the well being of our children (big and small!), if we want to create a healthy and happy society. Thank you for your great talk.

    diet is much more important for obesity, you can sit in the couch all day and if you eat right you can maintain or loose weight easily but if you don't eat right even if you run all day it would be very difficult or impossible to even maintain your weight, and probably with a bad diet, exercise will become very difficult anyway !!

    Great presentation, Matt! Alarming also. And I think parents have a lot of responsibility promoting physical literacy also, and are dropping the ball - as it were.
    And while not physical activity, the RIGHT TYPES of video games are beneficial too. (Yes I'm biased) I'd love my industry to find a way to reward a kid not for watching an ad to get free gold but for walking 10,000 steps or running for 30 minutes. We have the tech.

      There are NO studies in early childhood ( 0-6 ) we know they use mobile and watch tv, still the users tend to be 10 to 24… they are not all that time in front of the screen , but the studies suggest ( IFT in Mexico ) the users check the smartphone all day

    Phys. Ed. should never be a mandatory course in high school. It wastes a full period that could be dedicated to math, science, or language arts that are useful.
