In a significant turn of events in March 2024, Niger etched its name in history as the first African nation to terminate its military cooperation with the United States. Presently, U.S. officials find themselves engaged in negotiations with Niger's military government, seeking permission to maintain their forces and bases within the country. Nonetheless, the United States is reluctant to sever ties completely and is attempting to sway certain African leaders to its side.
Most recently, American commandos embarked on a visit to one of Central Africa's most notorious regimes, Equatorial Guinea, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations. It is important to note that this visit by U.S. military officials was not a mere sightseeing excursion. Their primary purpose was to deliver financial assistance in the form of humanitarian aid to Equatorial Guinea's President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, a tyrant who has held power for over six decades. This aid represents the latest endeavor by the United States to court President Teodoro's favor.
Following the donation of humanitarian aid to Equatorial Guinea, Commander Michael White, the defense attaché to the U.S. Embassy in the country, expressed his hopes for enhanced cooperation, stating, "We hope that this donation is the beginning of additional collaboration." Echoing this sentiment, U.S. Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, David Gilmour, conveyed optimism that the recent contribution of medical supplies would mark the "first of many opportunities to partner with" the government of Equatorial Guinea.
