    Perfect length, no fluff, well edited, and fantastic information. One tip I'd add for beginners would be to carve the bowl first. This might assist when correcting overcut in the bowl.

    Ben, I don't know about carving spoons but I know about backs! Your lower back will give you problems in a few years. You need to raise your chopping block so you're not bent over so much. Try and stand as straight up as possible. Nice vid and lots of advice, most on the safest way of cutting. Give your lower back some consideration as well.

      BOY! can I agree with that! At 69 I'm really paying for it big time. Now if I bend over for even a few minutes, I'm feeling for the next hour or two. Save your back now and you won't have to pay for it later.

    Great lesson, thank you for sharing it. I bought some carving knives from you several years back. They have much longer handles than the one you're using for carving the bowl in this video. I cannot remember what you called them years back. It struck me as a Native American name. Just found the name by scrolling down your list of spoon carving videos: Mocotaugan is the word I was looking for. When you get to 73, the remembering gets a bit tougher. Thanks again for the fine video.

    I often remind myself how you work (and watch you videos when its cold in the workshop) and how its inspired me.

    This was a fantastic video! great introduction into the world of green spoon carving. I really want to have ago at spoon carving, the idea of the beauty of the everyday is something I believe in very strongly with myself training to become a potter making functional tableware for use in the home, and spoons like the one you made here are so beautiful not only in aesthetic but function as well! top notch stuff hope to be making spoons like that myself one day! hanks again.

    Just found this video and find it far superior to others on the same subject. In reviewing the comments I took note of one expressing concern with lower back issues using your axe technique. After 2 back surgeries I would not be able to use the axe as you have. But I will use your shaping instructional with a shaving horse and drawknife to allow me to stand up when I finish. Ha

    Nice job, just the type of spoon shape I like. You did good on the details as well. The one thing I wish you had added at the end is some advice on treating the wood so it's food safe. (Because of the acids in some foods can get into the wood fibers.)
