  • I have loved this song by John Denver from the first time I heard it. I listened to this LP until the grooves were worn out when I was young in the 70's. It gives such a feeling of Winter coming to a close and new beginnings of Spring right around the corner, it fits perfectly for this time of year being mid-March, please comment if you enjoyed it as much as I did!

In 1974, I was blessed to have my 2 band mates play this song while my bride and party came down the isle. Almost 46 years later I can still remember this event like it was this afternoon. I had never thought that our love, laughter, and life could have grown to where it is today. Only by the Grace of God and a loving wife, could this man say “Thank You Lord for this blessed life!” Funny how a well written song can bring back many precious memories of life. Aloha, Kirk Hinton

My father introduced me to this song when I was in high school. I came home very late on night and tried to sneak undetected. My dad was sitting in the family room in the dark and called me as I was creeping up the stairs. I thought, "Uh-oh, I'm in trouble again." But he just wanted to share this song with me. We listened to it two or three time, sitting there in the dark. It's so beautiful. That remains one of the many sweet memories I have of my dad. I love this song. Thank you. Peace

Wouldn't you know that John Denver's greatest tune is actually performed by Denver's lead guitarist, Mike Taylor. Thank you Mike! "Late Winter Early Spring" really touches the soul. I played it a thousand times in college as stress reduction from exams. This instrumental reminds me of another similar tune done by Bill Purselll and it is entitled "Our Winter Love". Runs along the same lines. Check it out. Daniel

It turns out--and I did not know, or simply whiffed--that the last important line the whole season suite comes after after the end of "Spring" (which is not this number---this is "Early Spring"). There is Mike Taylor: "There were...there were some good things in there." At which point I'm almost arranging my own epitaph. I want only this one tune: "Early Spring" ..followed by that ending comment. "Yeah, there might have been a few good things in there."
But no one will ever know or care anyway. Still...It's all good.

When I was riding a bicycle across the United States in 1977, we camped at a pass high in the Oregon cascades. That night me and a friend of mine played this song on two guitars. He had a 12 string and I had a six. The location and situation were perfect. I will never forget that feeling.

A friend just sent this link to me. Been a fan since 1968 when I first met John. Possibly one of the most beautiful and spiritual pieces of guitar music ever written - so soothing. I was curious that Mike Taylor's name was only mentioned once in these comments. Mike composed this piece and played the lead parts to John's peaceful chord progression. Mike was John's guitarist for several years and played the well known lead guitar intro lick to Country Roads as well as the recognizable riff to Rocky Mountain High. Mike is on almost all the tracks on the RMH album and his playing made that album so very special. He was a special talent I had the pleasure of meeting him on a few occasions - quiet, humble and a super nice guy. He passed in 2010. Lovely video by the way - wonderful images!

I managed to come by a gorgeous D 41 Martin in my 20's and though I was never more than a very moderately accomplished acoustic guitar player, I loved this song so much that I taught myself this entire lead just by listening to the cut over and over again on my turntable. Then I got a book that had the rhythm chords in it, and got my brother to sit down with me and play the rhythm chords while I got to pick the lead that I had learned so painstakingly. We both enjoyed it immensely and 50 years later as I listen again to this cut, I can hardly believe I could once play that wonderful lead. Life is long, but any music that one can make is never wasted time. I still love this cut!!

I had a similar journey in Boulder CO, at about that same time. In my case I called the local news station (then Denver's 9 News) and managed to get someone...who knew someone...who might know the producer of a similar--if not the same--closing broadcast. Here it was the very last item before the station went off the air.
In this case the producer DID know the cameraman, and he identified the song back down the channels to me. So I got lucky much earlier than you did, it seems.
For all I know we two were seeing the same segment, produced by the same team. Wouldn't surprise me--I think "Gannett Broadcasting" owned the Denver station at the time, and maybe your SLC station as well.

I have always loved this piece. Is there a live version?

Yes!!! I have enjoyed this, too! Perhaps more than any other tune. I've spent years trying to master all the guitar parts and I've never gotten bored trying. My uncle used this song on a family reunion video he created and it stirs up my most cherished feelings and memories. It makes me so happy to hear you have been enjoying it since the 70’s. Thanks for sharing!
Fun fact: there are two versions. The other has more piano and less lead guitar. Pretty much the same, but it blew my mind when I discovered this other version.

Are many of these photos from Utah? Looks awfully familiar ....

Utah, and Idaho mostly. You will see views over the Salt Lake Valley like the inversion shots, and Bear Lake Valley of SE Idaho.

As a general rule J D's voice finds my every last nerve and grates on them. Don't get me wrong, I love his songs and singing, but only once in two or three blue moons. Season Suite is one of the tops. Another song which brings tears to my eyes is Prisoners.
