A magnificent baritone...an instrument in itself, Scott's voice is imbued with all the nuanced tones in every ballad he sings that linger on after the end of song.
🎹 After a lifetime in the entertainment Industry, I cannot believe that I never discovered this man until a few months back. It's not just the exquisite timbre of his voice, but what he technically and instinctively does with it. For me, Scott Walker is the greatest of the greats.
No one here in the usa knows who this guy is, even though he's American. But the man was a heck of performer. It's impossible not to look away, he's a star.
The song writers of this song wrote many songs for Petula Clark in the 1960s notably Downtown, My Love, I Know a place, Don't Sleep in the Subway to name but a few.
There has never been anyone to match this amazing voice. He makes it all look so effortless. Beautiful, wonderful voice, able to make you cry without warning.
Without doubt one of the best and most iconic voices that has ever been heard. A absolute genius, He will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Mr Scott Walker.
You are absolutely totally correct....I wish I knew more about his illness, cancer, his last months, and his funeral, who went, who spoke, I guess I will never know.
Scott Walker and Andy Williams had two of the most iconic male voices of the 20th Century. Regardless, of what other male singers or style of music you are comparing them to.
I was named after this song in 1969 by my wonderful Nana. It was her favourite song ever. So beautiful and so proud of my song! Thankyou Scott for the music.
Joanna I can't forget the one they call Joanna We owned the summer hand in hand Joanna And now she's always, just a tear away Goodbye you You long lost summer leaving me behind you Repeating things for lovers that may find you I still hang on to every word that day. You passed my way, Joanna You made the man a child again so sweetly He breathed your smiles and in your eyes completely And on his heart there's still a trace of you I love you but nothing in this world could make you mine Yet still in time... Joanna Joanna you may remember me and change your mind I love you but nothing in this world could make you mine Yet still in time Joanna Joanna you may remember me. And change your mind.
Scott Engel Walker certainly had a commanding baritone singing voice. As to its distinctiveness, I think many would say Scott Walker's voice bears a strong resemblance to that of Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers. It is also highly debatable Walker or Medley would be considered "greatest" even when compared with the tenor voices of popular vocalists Freddy Mercury and George Michael, or the more esoteric tenor voice of Carmelo Esteban "Steve" Martin Caro of the baroque pop group The Left Banke. Of the latter, just take a listen to Caro's achingly beautiful voice in the recordings of such tunes as "Pretty Ballerina" and "Walk Away Renée" and one could not fail to be moved. Where Scott Walker's musical genius was strongest was his eclectic choices of material, coupled with his ability to produce his sessions and those of other recording artists, as well that he also composed orignal materiel, all facets not typically demonstrated by those who were strictly vocalists, such as the aforementioned Medley. Walker's musical diversity probably put him more in a league with such artists as David Bowie, Elton John, Brian Wilson, etc. Many would also say such opera tenors as Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti certainly quality as among the "greatest" male singers period. Among other popular male vocalists, consideration must also be given to the hauntingly melodic voice of Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys, the beautiful blood harmonies of Don and Phil Everly of the rockabilly duo The Everly Brothers, and the soul stirrings of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. Also, many would include Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Andy Williams as having very powerful voices. And if we are including female singers, certainly Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield would have to be considered as among "greatest." And for classical female voices, Maria Callas, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland are considered among the very best sopranos. Still, range alone does not a "great" singing voice make. I would submit Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Ronnie Spector, Little Richard and Mick Jagger could also be considered as "great" voices in their respective musical genres. it is unfair to compare musical apples and oranges anyway. So to make a blanket statement that any popular singer would be considered "greatest" when compared with an opera singer would probably provoke a laugh in the face from those educated in serious music. It is probably better to at least narrow down comparisons into categories such as classical and popular, then perhaps further divisions between jazz, rock and roll and soul, etc.
@@gymnastix If you put him in the category you suggested (Bowie, Elton, etc.) Walker stands a cut above. You'll definitely confirm this as a singer. If you;re a singer, try to do what he did. It takes immense mastery of your voice.
What a song, since I first heard "Love Her" that was me hooked,"Always Coming Back To You" "First Love Never Dies"so many memories of Scott's songs , as a 5 year old,in 1969 I was ill with appendicitis, waiting for an ambulace I was pretty bad with fever I heard him singing "Montague Terrace In Blue" on the old black and white television we had , taken me years to find out it was Scott singing live on the BBC show I thank you for a lifetime of inspiration, and to Gary Leeds for talking you and John Maus to coming to the U.K , after he was a drummer in P J Probys touring band the rest is history, even David Bowie is fan of your music, dues paid, respect earned in full, god bless from a liife long fan 🙏
The first song I ever listened by Scott, summer 2007 in a hotel room in London. His music became almost inseparable since then.Have a safe journey up there, genius Noel Scott Engel.
RIP to a great soul an original with so much depth to him. The sun wont shine anymore but thank you for such beautiful songs as this..."you made the man a child again so sweetly..." what a gorgeous line. xxx
This performance by Scott Walker is as good if not better than anything that Frank Sinatra Jack Jones or any one else you could mention have ever done.
Totally agree ,Frank Sinatra had a great voice ,but a little over rated in my humble opinion . Scott had such a beautiful voice ,far more touching and authentic I think .
Joanna was broadcast on TV on the Canary Islands one saturday afternoon. I was lucky and surprised to see scott singing on spanish TV. Together with this song he also song two more songs; "Jackie" and "The world´s strongest man". John and scott were very popular in those days in spain. They apeared many times on TV.
The best of Scott Walker, as moving today as ever. What a career he could have had! Great Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent song too. A super ballad sung musically, with conviction.
I was a very young teenager when I first heard this beautiful voice. I did,nt know it was beautiful at the time, as he was singing pop with John and Phil..? As I grew older the songs from their sixties stuff became much more powerful to me. Scotts later stuff just sorta baffled me as I just could not differentiate from Scott of The Walker Brothers and the Scott i did not understand... However, my memories of this wonderful voice always make me smile and harken back to the days when i wished i looked, sang and wrote like him. He was a wonder in all his styles and a big influence.. Luvsya big man.... Give ur brother John a big hug for me.
Just last month I discovered that he sung the sun ain't going to shine any more ". Then I heard another song by him and and blew me away." the old man is back again" then I hear this today and I'm again I'm in awe.. I cannot believe this guy was singing in the time he was around.. He seemed as if he was from the 40s and 50s.. Im 45 yrs old and I'm glad I have an ear for great music and singer's.. Rip Scott walker.
Yep, he did some avante garde stuff later in his career, some a little too off-the-wall for me, but what a wonderful light tenor voice transporting emotion to another level of being anywhere. Now we are lost as an island imprisoned by the idiots of Brexit. When Scott sang melodies such as this one, I felt that I was on the Côte D'Azur enjoying an endless summer. Thank you Scott for the wonderful memories all bought about by your soulful rendition of well-written songs.
Here - and beyond - I regard him as probably America's greatest male vocalist. He could never truly be European in the way he wanted. But that's an entry code, actually, to the British that believed he could.
The video is not well synced with his voice, (technology of the day perhaps) but this is a long-forgotten gem. he is underrated for his time. His name won't come up (most don't even remember it) like Sinatra or Como or Andy Williams, (for example.) I didn't mention all the big ones. He had a lot of competition. Truly a mellow, smooth voice.
Thank you Pedsromusic6070. You are a star. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS VIDEO OF SCOTT WALKER SINGING THIS FOR MANY YEARS BUT GAVE UP HOPE UNTIL TEN MINUTES AGO WHEN i LOOKED AGAIN (FOR THE THOUSANDTH TIME) AND THERE IT WAS.. Thank you sir. A brilliant song and it has made my day.
Una voz prodigiosa, para una gran canción.Conocia a Scott cuando era miembro de Walker Brothers.
Possibly one of the most beautiful male voices ever.
THE best male voice ever
sure

Agree 👍
This song is one of Scott's best, and a big hit in 1968.
Always liked Scott Walker. His voice was so great. Saw him in concert once. Received A standing O.
🎹 After a lifetime in the entertainment Industry, I cannot believe that I never discovered this man until a few months back. It's not just the exquisite timbre of his voice, but what he technically and instinctively does with it. For me, Scott Walker is the greatest of the greats.
Absolutely agree. His cds and vinyl are never far from my system. Sublime doesn't even come close
Just the same with me.
No one here in the usa knows who this guy is, even though he's American. But the man was a heck of performer. It's impossible not to look away, he's a star.
They were very well known in England
I know who he is. As a child in the 60s I loved the Walker Brothers' songs. Now I love this song too!

There were known in France and in the UK and it is such a pleasure to listen to that man singing.
Many US artists left their country of birth and “made” it in the UK eg Sonny and Cher!
Love you for ever Scot, Verity ❤
His phrasing and the purity of voice. Just outstanding. Wow.
The sun will continue to shine but it'll shine a little less brightly without Scott Walker here.
There has never been anyone to match this amazing voice. He makes it all look so effortless. Beautiful, wonderful voice, able to make you cry without warning.
Still missing the timber of that voice and beautiful phrasing.
What a beautiful voice 🥰
This song was written for his voice.
Without doubt one of the best and most iconic voices that has ever been heard.

Joanna has been my favourite girl's name since I was about 3 1/2. Beautiful name, beautiful song.
Beautiful song, beautifully sung. Fabulous 🤗❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏
this is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard, if God could sing, and choose a song.
wow, a beautiful comment!
Tell me. How is it possible that music since then has declined so much, compared to this marvel of song?

As soon as he starts singing I break into tears, ethereal, beautiful beyond words.

RIP dear Scott, the golden voice for all the times 😥😪😪
The voice of Heaven itself! 😇😇😇😇
He's unknown in the usa, but I can see that the man was a gripping performer.
Many years ago when this Song was Released in Great Britain the Public went "Crazy" for Him, He is Amazing. He first sang with his two Brothers.
Not actually his brothers
