- Acoustic cover of Girlfriend In A Coma by The Smiths.
I’ve wanted to do this for a while but it always sounded crappy on a solo acoustic guitar. I’ve worked out an arrangement that I think sounds good so hopefully people like it.
From Wikipedia:
"Girlfriend in a Coma" is a song by the English rock band the Smiths, written by singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr. It was the first of three UK singles from the band's fourth and final studio album, Strangeways, Here We Come. Inspired by the song "To Be Young, Gifted and Black", "Girlfriend in a Coma" features a lilting acoustic guitar line performed by Marr and lyrics about a hospital-bound lover sung by Morrissey.”
Lyrics:
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know, it's serious
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know, it's really serious
There were times when I could
Have murdered her
But you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her
No, I don't want to see her
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do ooh ooh ooh
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know, it's serious
My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye
There were times when I could
Have strangled her
But you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her
Would you please
Let me see her
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do ooh ooh ooh
Let me whisper my last goodbyes
I know, it's serious

The tandem Morrissey/Marr was arguably the most important collaboration in the modern music industry since the Lennon/McCartney collaboration. Adam Barret combines both - hanging up a musical framework(Marr) for an emotionally laden voice(Morrissey). This video - Adam playing the guitar and singing alone in a bedroom - highlights the strength of that tandem in general and more particularly the importance of Morrissey's solitude of his isolation in his bedroom in the pre-Smiths years when he was reading Oscar Wilde and bombarding the music press with his communiqees. In my opinion, people like Adam Barret make humanity achieve real progress.
Wow, probably the most professionally written and nicest comment I’ve ever gotten, haha! Really appreciate you saying that 💙
I’ll take your well constructed comment and press: what is the connection between what you said Adam does and “real” human progress? (A claim such as that should not be supported by opinion but by evidence or logic). I’m also curious what metrics you would use for “human progress” to sufficiently define what that even means.
@@matt.pma.kresnaputra5458 I don't know if this channel is a good platform to discuss epistemology, ontology or other key components of philosophy. I do agree with your criticism on 'real human progress' - there might be a better formulation applicable here - but I am not a native anglophone. What I mean is the following: my partner is a music teacher who works with children from a socio-economically disadvantaged background and she has shown some of Adam's videos in January 2022 in one of her classes. No less than 4 out of 11 children in that group now play guitar (only the recorder is mandatory) and practice Smiths and Morrissey covers, inspired by Adam's approach. Attendance in her class has increased dramatically and she often sees these young aspiring guitarists wearing Smiths t-shirts and hears them play their music on their phone. As for the last part of your comment (metrics for human progress to sufficiently define what that even means), I'm afraid I don't understand what you are on about. Metrics are not used to define a study object or concept but to prove a theory/hypothesis. In other words: the definition comes before the metrics in the scientific experiment. And 'sufficiently define what that even means' is a beautiful example of a pleonasm. May I suggest you study the Dunning Kruger effect before you plant anymore comments?

Agreed.
It is still an honor to hear you use your voice for this music, never stop
It’s an honour that you’re still interested in watching! Thanks for being here ✌️
My girlfriend had an aneurism, went into a coma, and died. This song is so precious. Thank you Adam Barrett for the cry and the cover.
I'm always particularly impressed by your rhythmic strumming patterns and the ability to combine it with melody as well as top notch vocals, it's a combination you don't see a lot! It shows the amount of work that had to be done in order to achieve this, take pride into your accomplishments. You always inspire me to pick up the guitar again and try to the best of my (very limited) ability!
I really appreciate your comment Maurice. Thanks for the compliment 💙
Yes! Came here to say that.
There are people who can sing beautiful and heartfelt renditions of Morrisey's lyrics. But doing that and at the same time adapting Johnny Marr's intricated guitar licks full of pedal effects to acoustic guitar to accompany that...
Of course, the talent shows in all the videos, not just the Smiths, but in these i think it's more noticeable how good Adam is in melding voice and guitar very seamlessly.
So good to watch, Keep it up!
It’s serious!!! ❤️🎸🎤
Very! 😎
Best cover I’ve ever heard of this one. Perfect 👏
Oh man, I would be happy to be able to either play or sing, but to do both.... You are killing it! Love your covers! They take me back to my youth in a whole new way.

Your covers are always incredible, was wondering if you could share you arrangement(s) online too? Maybe not a full guitar tutorial but just your specific arrangements because they're always sound much better than others I find and I'm not great at figuring out stuff strictly by ear and what I can see.
