- How to disassemble and reassemble a Mossberg 464 30/30
Be advised, by disassembling your 464 it will void your warranty I believe so make sure you feel comfortable doing this before you begin!
It did end up being easier than I had anticipated though considering that prior to this video there wasn't a single other video on how to do this as far as I know...
As I said in the video, if you have questions or need clarification about something that was unclear you can email me at tpepples@gmail.com but PLEASE do not send me nasty emails or questions that would go beyond a basic understanding of the process I showed. I am NOT a gunsmith and will not be able to problem shoot for you...
Hope you enjoy!
I remember watching this video years ago when I first got my 464 and successfully taking it apart for a first cleaning. Fast forward to this past fall when it had an encounter with a sandy river bank during deer season. Remembered your video tonight and even though I had to tear it down a little further to get the grime out, this got me through the most difficult parts. All back together and good as new. I would like to echo the others that have thanked you for making this guide. Much appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to say so! I’m really glad it has been helpful to you! Plus, I got to show my wife your comment because when I made the video she thought I was a doofus for making a CZcams tutorial lol
@@TPLeatherworks Haha love it!! Well when I see a fellow like yourself that's willing to take the time to put themselves out there to do an impromptu teardown on his dining room table and save someone else some headaches- I gotta pay my respects 😀
Thank you for taking the time to make this guide. I downloaded and saved this, because YT sometimes removes stuff. I was able to follow this and disassemble my 464 and clean it, and put it back together again.
Awesome! Really glad I could help!
Great video and very informative. Was nice to find someone brave enough to tackle the disassembly. My son has this rifle and absolutely loves it. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, I just bought a 464 and like you, do all my own maintenance on all my firearms. never having had a lever action, this has really helped. Well done.
Thanks for the informational video. I love lever-action rifles, but they are a pain to disassemble and clean! I would never have tried to take down my 464 without watching this video! Keep up the good work. But next time, PLEASE put a lamp or something behind the camera so we can see the close-up work! Hope you post a video soon on the Henry. I hope to add a H009 to my collection next year.
They need to make some more of these .
Thank you sir, just got me one today and now I will feel more comfortable taking this thing down awesome video 👌
Very well done explanations! Please remember to point a light wherever you camera points, so we can see.
Lighting Lighting Lighting!!! About time someone put together a model 464 video 👍👍👍Keep up the great work dude!
Thanks I'm just glad people find it useful!
thank you so much i broke my extractor and couldn't find any videos to help but this one so good job and thanks
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
Thank you for that. It’s the only explanation I could find.
Thanks for the vid! Much needed! I have the pistol grip Marinecote 464 and it didnt come with that screw you pointed out at 3:22 either. I always thought it was strange that that hole was there but it shoots well so i cant complain.
thank you this helped me SO MUCH
Great job.
Informative video. Good job.
great video man! thanks a lot!
Re: the reassembly, its important to reiterate that installing the bolt retaining pin in the upper part of the receiver is key to a successful safety & operational check. If it's not in properly (listen for the snap) it will be protruding just enough to not allow for your lever to cycle. Head banging will ensue. Thanks for the video. Trigger next?
Great vid. Thanks. I just bought one of these. Great gun for the money. Under rated
I couldn't agree more! It's a great entry level gun and has served me well. No complaints.
I wish you'd cut the first 2 minutes to about 10seconds, and doubled the amount of light. It okay to over expose the surrounds out with light. An idea is to use a black cloth under the subject, that will fool the camera to let more light in.
Thanks. Yeah it was a long time ago. That was the first video I ever made and you’re right about the light. Now I just make slightly better lit videos of low quality 🤣
thank you for the excellent video. The spot you're referring to in the beginning where you punch out the rimmed pin, there's supposed to be a screw there. possibly to prevent the pin from loosening out? anyway, thank you for the awesome video
Hey Tommy thanx for the video, its the only one I could find on a 464. I like to know how to clean my own guns & this video was helpful. Like Taylor I was in search on a video on the SPX/ZMB but like u said it should be the same in the inside. I have mine in the mail so as soon as I put some rounds through it Ill let u know if I hit any road blocks thanx again.
John from Miami Fl.
Jonathan Marrero Glad I could help! Did you ever get around to checking if the procedure was the same for the SPX??
I don't own a lever action yet,so as far as cleaning one how is this done if this level of disassembly voids the warranty?
Hey, you got real lucky that I saw this comment as quick as I did haha to clean it you just open the bolt with the lever and send a few patches down the barrel with your favorite cleaner on it. You can also shoot a little Rem oil into the receiver area once in a while. A full take down isn’t necessary very often.
@@TPLeatherworks thanks, much appreciated. As far as lever action I am looking @ the 464. I like the Mossberg shotguns quite a bit, well built & mine have all been dependable & Mossberg doesn't break the bank. That's why I'm seriously considering the 464,it's also my understanding that the disassembly of the 464 SPX differs still. I'm alittle on the fence between a 464 or a Mossberg patrol rifle though. Really been looking @ the one in 5.56. Once again thanks! Great video! You've been very helpful!
Thanks for the video. Very informative. Have u tried running any hornady lever evolution rounds through your s yet?
aj Thanks for the feedback! I haven't put any lever evolution rounds through it yet unfortunately because where I'm at it's seemingly impossible to find any in any of the gun stores... I ask every time I stop by but to no avail...
Got this as my first lever action only i got the grey with black lam its pretty nice
I really liked that model but couldn't find one. Good for you, glad you like it!

Good video. Maybe next time you might want to try some back lighting (from behind camera towards the subject) as filming a black object in shadow makes it very hard to see what your pointing at. Other than that your video was very helpful as I am looking to purchase a lever action and am tossing up between a few brands.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm even less of a video producer than I am a gun smith but the 464 was a great gun. I did however trade it in for a Henry 30-30 about an hour ago and will probably be doing a video of that soon! No problems with the 464 but this Henry is worth the extra money if you can swing it! Hope that helps!
Why haven't you done that yet?
It's been about 5 years since this video was made, how has the Mossberg 464 held up? Has it smoothed up more? Do you recommend this rifle? Thanks
I got rid of the gun on a trade for a Henry 30-30 a few years back. It did smooth out as I used it though. I would recommend for a nice hunting rifle that you’re not afraid to ding up a little over time.
@@TPLeatherworks thanks man
mine do"s not have the first pen you took out is they another one
I enjoyed the video,Be cause this is the only one on youtube that shows anything on doling this! But I can not seem to get that Last pin in there??? And I banged on it pretty hard.. :( I don't know why i can get it all to line up?? But everything else was right on! There was a Couple of times that you was doing something where the camera wasn't on it but can't remember what part! I would like for you to do it again if you would with a lot more Lighting.. But Thanks.. :)
Tommydreamer: do you have the safety near the lever? If so, have you ever try to take it off?
I watched a guy remove the trigger safety the video is called, Mossberg 464 mod and rant.
How well does it shoot?
Great video brother, it really was very informative! Tell me, have you had any type of cycling problems? From the reviews I have read, it seems that 50% of the 464's have problems with that. I'm getting one this Saturday and will be using the Leverevolution ammo. I will be sure to let you know it goes with it. It's my understanding that this gun was actually made with this specific ammo in mind, not sure if that's true or not....
Hi Hog, My son had his fare share of some stuck rounds during the first couple hundred cycles/rounds. It now cycles beautifully. I'm told the break in period is pretty normal. Good luck.
Hog Wylder I have had the same experience as outsidersTexas had - there were a few rounds that stuck the first hundred rounds but haven't had any issues since. I have recently got the lever evolution rounds and they worked beautifully so I hope you enjoy your 464 - it's a really nice gun for the money!
+Hog Hunting and Survival They all do as far as ive seen while breaking in, however, most jams resulting from hangups are actually caused by short cycling. Firmly pushing the lever all the way foward eliminates the majority of jams.
So, have you repaired that crack in the buttstock where it attaches to the receiver?
I don’t still have the gun, but it didn’t have any cracks in the stock as far as I recall
In the video, it looks like a large, longitudinal crack running along the wood on the left side, where the forward end of the stock joins the receiver.
I emailed you. After putting the gun back together the lever will not come down with the pin in.
Hey, so I see you were having issues. Sure it was a year ago but better late than never, eh? Sorry if you ran into issues, did you ever get it resolved? And if so, would love to have you share it in case someone else is having the same problem.
Is that an NWT on the table?
Yes it is. Are you a witness?
Is it possible to remove the lever safety?
theralpha Not as far as I know. I will say that for me, I thought it was going to be more annoying than it turned out to be. I just worked with it and I dont even realize it's there anymore to be honest. Have you shot yours much?
would this be the same for the 464 spx?
It should be but as you can see I dont own the SPX but I believe the only differences are cosmetic... You can start to take a look at yours according to what I have here and if you run into a road block just stop and assess the situation...
OH THATCHA SAY?
Vinnie Cuda yeah that what i say ya lil darlin
Everyone is a troll & I apologize- FIRST THING YOU DO IS VERIFY THAT THE GUN IS UNLOADED.
