    2:10 - Thats a smoke detector source, it shoots off alpha particles which are highly charged, which completes the circuit, the same way it does in the detector its from. That said, no lead underwear required. Alpha particles are large and dump that energy extremely close to the source, so theres no way they'll make it to you before they are normal, harmless, helium.

      Well well well! Me thinks YOU MAY have just found a NEW means to SOLVE the current Helium Shortage by using the atmospheric plasma discharge between two large contacts to create enough alpha particles that can attract electrons fast enough and form enough helium to be captured in enough quantity that the world's Helium supply problem is no more!
      And while you are at it, add some photodiodes aka solar cells to reconvert the photons of the arc back into electricity and maybe some peizoelectric systems to convert the SOUND or shock-wave pressure of the arc discharge ALSO reconverted back to electricity. How much power of all the photon and acoustic discharges could be re-converted back into usable electrical current?
      --- This entire above set of inventions of using plasma arcing to create Helium from atmospheric plasma discharge (i.e. alpha particles) and using solar cells and peizoelectric systems to recapture energy is NOW FREE AND OPEN SOURCE under GPL-3 licence terms!
      P.S. there is enough free Helium floating about that can it can be captured probably at say 1000 KG per hour (i.e. in cyrogenic liquid form) with a big enough electrical arc system. It takes a lot of electricity but sometimes one needs the Helium gas more than the electricity!

    7:45 it also works on the principle of magnetostriction in coil core if you have a multiple-layer transformer. That's what usually gives the 50/60 Hz hum sound in big transformers, not windings itself.

    7:50 this is actually the explanation behind a phenomena called coil whine that pc heads will know! Graphics cards make a sound like they are shorting or arcing at times when under specific loads which is understandably very scary but it's actually just the coils on the card vibrating and doesn't cause any additional damage or ware. It's understandably very annoying but unfortunately I don't know of any remedy

      If you're lucky, and not in a GPU shortage. . . some companies / retailers will accept coil whine as a case for return. But that's the only solution (other than good headphones) that I'm aware of.

    7:49 Here in Austria the austrian railway company has many of the Taurus 1016 and 1116 locomotives (Also known as Siemens ES64U2), and this locomotives make a tone control by approaching, and this tone control is made by the transformators, and there are many videos on CZcams where you can see and hear it.

    7:03 don't forget, the humble bc547 can get up to over 100MHz! They are routinely used in tiny shitty FM broadcast transmitters. Component values of this transmitter are very similar to those of a little 'baby's first FM bug' circuit, so it will interfere with FM broadcast stations and the airplane band right above it.
    Modulated with let's say 100khz square wave from the 555, you could get a whole lot of side bands stretching out into the GHz range, a lot of harmonics because of the lack of filtering, and slightly interfere with phones in very close proximity.
    You need a bit more to actually make phone use impossible because they'll probably automatically look for a better frequency to use, but it's not as far fetched as you make it seem.
    For effective emission of ghz-band signals, you also don't need longer, but shorter antennas. Half a wave length at 2400MHz is only 5 centimeter. .

      I think replaced by other transistors, the jammer can reach 4g and 5g main frequency, however the power is so limited and just will work in a short range.

      @@yuvanm9040 @yuvan It's a kind of modulation to change the main resonance frequency slightly by the factor of 555 frequency. By this way mobile couldn't change its operating chanel and pick other one in order to reduce the interference. Btw, for jamming radio devices you should produce a band of frequency rather than just a monotonous sharp frequency. It's just a simple sweeping FM.

    The shower thing also happened to me, getting shocked when touching shower faucet But two other weird thing were happening, one, if I kept just enough skin on the faucet the zap would have been continuous and the second and the weirdest was the fact that there were some spots on the tiles where I would get zapped in the same way only at lower intensity. The only thing i observed was the fact that if the tiles were freshly cleaned of the deposited limestone there would be no zapping and the power of it would increase with the thickness of the limestone layer. My father, an electrician did not believe me. I thought it had to do something with iron particles in the water creating some sort of circuit when deposited on the tiles along with the limestone.

    When one of the marx generator spark gaps is closed, it puts the capacitor in series with the next one in turn, so the voltage on the next capacitor is increased dramatically when measured to ground, that's why they all fail at once.
    The resistors prevents the capacitors discharging before they can run the entire gauntlet. They charge slowly in parallel but can only discharge quickly along the entire chain in series

      I came here to say this… you beat me to it. I used to work with a large 3-stage Marx bank where the spark gaps were completely isolated from each other. One gap was triggered by a spark plug to create a bit of ionized gas in the gap, which triggered the main discharge. The other gaps in the bank fire because the first gap firing caused the voltage across the others to jump suddenly by 33%.

    We have a soldering station in the lab with metal handles on it. Every time I started soldering I noticed an itchy prickly feeling where my ESD straps were tucked in my socks. I measured the handle to ground and sure enough there was 40V AC. I replaced the power cable of the soldering station and it was fixed. Most guys in the lab never noticed! I get the feeling that whether or not those lower voltages can tickle and prick you depends on the spark gap. If there's an even surface you'll feel nothing, but I had tiny metal wires tucked in my socks.
    Remember those lightning/plasma globes? You feel nothing when your fingers are firmly on the glass, but if you raise them just enough for a sparking gap you will.

    8:00 Yes....especially in the 50s and 60s electrostatic tweeters were used alot in tube radios. They were biased using the B+ voltage. When transistors took over these tweeters got rare and today they can only be found in expensive speaker systems.

    7:32 Actually at my engineering school, some of my classmates had a project like this, and it works surprisingly well. The sound is very directional though, and you need a very high voltage for the speaker to work.

    6:51 Mehdi, you're misinterpreting the schematic. The 555 Timer is there to energize the LC circuit in short bursts, which in turn oscillates at way higher frequencies. I'm too lazy to do the math, but it seems about right for more than 1GHz. It might not be a sophisticated jammer, but if it's near a device, it should at least significantly worsen the SNR.

      Not only that, the one I looked at was tuned for the exact frequency of the phone network. I guess I was trying to just fill the phone frequency with noise. It did have a very short range

      I tried it on the park, for example. Brought my inverter for 110v, my car battery, a 1MOhm resistor and gave it a lick, it worked. I mean, the voltage drops, and no current flows, and I didn't die.

    I used to have electrostatic loud speakers :) They was quite big and the sound from them was really good but they lacked bass so I combined them with open air 12" (4 woofers) dipole speakers that had electronic compensation to make them play down to 25hz.

    Speaking of high voltage overhead lines, where I live there is a trail that goes under some. When I touch an object like a boulder, I can feel current flowing through my hand. I could also see my arm hair stand up, and one was vibrating at approximately 60 Hz.

    Not long ago one day I was walking barefoot outside and plugged in the BBQ (we got a pellet bbq which requires power), and when I touched the case I got shocked. I grabbed a voltmeter and measured about 60 volts on the metal casing. It turned out that there was some leaking voltage on the circuit, leaking into the "earth" cable. It turns out that linear power supplies from things like laptops and phones can cause tiny spikes at high frequencies, which are for some reason dumped on the earthing because they only use up a fraction of each AC cycle. that's what I read at least. There are special plugs to filter them, called net filters. It's quite scary nonetheless, especially when you get shocked the first few times. It's not dangerous, often only less than 1ma of current, at 60v, but still shocking. The shower guy might've had the same issue.

    For the Marx generator, I think it may be very simple. When the first spark gap arcs, the first two capacitor get in series. The combined voltage is high enough to arc the second spark gap. To test that theory, maybe increasing the gap gradually for each capacitor may work. If it works, to get larger arcs, i would suggest setting the smallest gap at the end and increase it with each gap. I think the last capacitor is the slowest to charge because its charging current goes through the highest number of resistors. With only the last gap being small, most of your capacitors are charged completely when the last is charged enough to trigger the arc. That arc would then trigger the others. That would work only if the sparks could go off in the other direction though.

    The 555 ic might be used for noise generation, i think you should inspect resonating part close to antenna more carefuly, 2n2222 transistor might be used up for 800mhz and lc resonator looked quite realistic

    Is it really because of ionizing radiation? Or is it just because the first spark gap jumps, which adds the voltage to the voltage across the second spark gap, so it exceeds the ionization voltage for that gap, and so on up the chain?

      Put some shielding between the gaps and you'll know if it's radiation or high field strengths.

      In theory you should be able to figure out if the radiation is playing a role by placing a material that blocks radiation in between the 1st and the 2nd spark gap right? If the circuit doesn't trigger anymore it's at least likely this is because the radiation is getting blocked.

    Commented before on the original Marx Generator video, hoping it might get noticed on this one. One of the best ways to insulate a Marx Generator is to place the circuit in a sealed container of oil. For the input wires and spark gaps you just need to make standoffs through drilled-out holes in the container before adding the oil, then seal those holes with Silicon. This allows for the circuit to handle much, much higher voltages as the only potential arc points under all but the most extreme of conditions are the spark gaps or input wires.

    You can make an arc by itself make musical notes. You need a tig welder (or a controllable inverter power source) that can output AC and have veriable frequency settings. There are a few videos of people programming there tig welders to do it. The reason why you couldn't make an arc across the plates is because you need a sharp point for it to start from, an inert shielding gas to stabilise the arc and a high frequency start to bridge the arc without touching the 2 pieces together.

    The 555 circuit produces a square wave.
    Square waves produce an infinite series of odd-multiple sine-wave harmonics.
    So, in theory, you can make a jammer with an 555... if the design has a good RF output-stage.

    I once ran a project to restore an 18m satellite dish for use in radio astronomy (much like what I'm doing now!). There was a large rack full of equipment that was originally used for positioning. When we first cracked the door of the small building open to see "what's what" we found the mortal remains of a juvenile raccoon in the rack of wires and relays and thyratrons and massive power resistors, etc. We decided to name him (or her?)
