    This is just amazing work and what a great truck to drive. I really like that you did not compromise the driver and passenger area. A lot of people let that area get beat-up. I think it's important that you keep the area you spend so much time in just as nice as the rest of the vehicle. A very high level of work, on this Series 80!

As it stands my vehicle weighs 5500 lbs but I get 14.5 mpg if I stay below 70mph. Range is my pet peeves. How do you get 26?? Slower speeds on the highway or is the Toyota diesel that efficient??

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před 4 lety

      I don't drive fast. Stay below 70. Adjust very patiently the injector pump. I just made a trip from the SF Bay Area to Arizona and got 23.6 mpg. I did not weigh the vehicle but I took a lot of weight off before starting the build. The seats, bumpers, trailer hitch, ABS and AT (put a 5 speed). I'll try to sneak onto a weight station one of these days. The link below to the build with the details is bloged on OVERLAND BOUND and you can email me there specific questions.

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před 4 lety +2

      The PVC tanks hold 9 gallons each. The go across the frame parallel to each other. The blog on OVERLAND BOUND has a sketch of the layout. Its a bit complicated, because you need to cycle hot water with the circulating pump, and keep the tank open to the atmosphere because the hot water expands - otherwise you will blow the tank. There are three taps on the bottom of the tanks. One for the compressed air/overflow/breather, one for the cold and one for the hot water. You will get a better understanding if you go to the blog...

    beautiful rig Ofer. currently own a hdj81 with the 1hdt 12valve, so this was amazing to watch.
    few questions though,
    1. did you overhaul tht diesel engine when you got it? oversize pistons? injector pump pverhaul?
    2. front mount intercooler? brand? homemade? im thinking of adding one from the hilux model 1kd.
    3. did you get the control boxes for the lockers?

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před 4 lety

      1. The engine was not overhauled. All the 'rubber' parts (hoses, belts, seals) were replaced including the timing gears and harmonic balancer and water pump. The injectors and pump were serviced. We did a compression test and it was per spec.
      2. The intercooler is made by PDI in AUZ. www.performancedieselintercoolers.com.au/products.
      3. The lockers came from a doner rolled vehicle with all the parts required including the control box. Every 80 series has all the harnesses in the vehicle so it is 'plug and play'
      I also highly recommend the stainless PPD exhaust system from AUZ. ppdperformance.com.au

Never cracked or leaked after 40k miles. All plumbing is 1/4” copper with compression fittings. I did wrap the ‘balls’ of the compression fittings with Teflon tape before closing them. Can I still do this swap today in California? I have a 1997 80 series

      It's a hit and miss. You can try in a remote place like Shasta or a small place in the central Valley. You may get lucky. Other option is to register it in another state.

    What was the dmv process for a diesel truck?

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před 4 lety

      Victor,
      The key is to go to a DMV not in a metropolitan area. Central Valley, Shasta area, etc. Say you want to do a fuel swap. They need to see the engine, a sticker 'diesel' in the fuel cap area, and the engine itself - that it looks like a diesel :). If they send you to a referee station, you are doomed. Go to anther DMV. Good luck.
      Cheers

      @@oferbruhis9942 So there's no way to clear an engine swap in advance? You're just rolling the dice?! Can you list the parts shop down south you got the lockers from? working on updating my '62. ;-)

      @@traviz1521 I know of at least 10 rigs that did the conversion and they all passed at the DMV. Toy Connection in Santa Clara, CA had the lockers from a rolled 80.

    Isn't this a HDJ80? Not a FJ80? Cool rig though!

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před 4 lety +2

      Technically, It was a FZJ80. The 1HDFT engine came on the HDJ81, but the registration still says FZJ80. :)

    FJ are petrol engines. This rig is the 1HD-FT diesel engine.

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před měsícem

      You are absolutely right. It was born as an FZJ80 with a gas engine 1FZ-FE (1993) automatic and converted to diesel engine 1HDFT with a manual (H151). Technically it is now an HDJ80. most photos and detail are in @big_red_adventures.

      Register on Overland Bound. It’s a great group of overlanders and you can get great tips. I wrote a blog on the build on the Overland Bound web site on the Overland Vehicle Build Threads called “Building a home in an 80 series Landcruiser”. It has all the little details of the build with links to all the parts. You can also PM directly to me with questions.

      The cabinets were custom built from 1/2" square steel tubing and sheet metal. Link to the details of the build are here...

    Hello, How much will the diesel conversions cost estimate.

    • @oferbruhis9942
      @oferbruhis9942 Před 4 lety

      Drive train runs about $9000 for the 1HDFT/H151. If you want to make sure that the engine is like 'new', then parts will be around $2-3K and labor $3-6K depending if you want to service injectors and pump.

    sorry just don't understand people who cram more stuff in their small SUVs than you would put in a full size truck with an actual bed..cant see the logic of it unless you do bush waking and rock crawling you are better off with a full size truck like a Tacoma or a Tundra
