I wanted them to end up together. Everyone saying that what she did to John was unforgivable clearly doesn’t understand that she married Tim so that she could look after Alan because he had an absentee mother and Tim was dying of cancer so Alan would go into care, she loved Alan and didn’t want to see that happen so she made a choice to be his mum so that she could be there in the best way possible through Tim’s illness. It was a choice to look after her dearest friends and she did it. I think when the time was right and Savannah and John where ready to begin again they did, the looks they gave each other at the end was hope for a fresh start with no illness or war to stand in there way. Life is messy and hard and sometimes people make tough or wrong decisions, but that’s life but don’t forget that it’s ultimately filled with so much passion and love and things happen for a reason.💛

Really? All she had to do was tell him. I love you but at the moment I feel obligated to this family. His reply would have been so what do we do for them since he clearly loved her. But no she left him out in the wilderness while she went about doing things her own way. That’s worse than the friend zone. And we call that romantic? If he had lost his life during the war he would have died knowing he was well and truly alone. Probably a military burial with no family in attendance since he had none. I don’t get this at all. Is a man’s worth tied to his capacity to suffer? Is that what constitutes romance to women?

I love this movie! Savannah was someone who couldn’t be alone. She always had to be in a relationship.
Her love for his son, Alan was the real reason she married the other guy. Also, some people love the idea of being needed in a relationship.
I assumed there was a time lapse due to John’s facial hair. Besides it’s Nicholas Sparks, the romantic leads have to end up somehow! Haha
At the end of the day, it’s a mind-fked if you think about it. You have a guy who treats his dad like crap, and leaves when he wants to go do his thing in the military. He had a choice to stay but he wanted to go. I don’t blame savannah for leaving. She waited way too long. Glad I didn’t watch this movie with my ex chick 12 years ago 😆

I think its kinda amazing how US Americans already managed to depict relationships as exchangable goods.
Like, how devoided of anykind of meaning has your society to be if you think something like that is something good. Not being able to be alone is one of the major factors to make yourself unhappy; because you'll end up in reality, in bad relationships.
Then the whole process of actually healing and forgiving is completly skipped in those movies.
And in the end, it doesn't matter anyway because the moral of such kind of movies is; got a nice body and smile, and it'll work out if you don't really feel emotions anyway - so just buy more stuff!

Not a fan of romance movies, but this was a very good movie. Very well made
The ridiculous thing abt this movie is her saying she had no choice abt marrying Tim to take care of him and his son. If it was completely platonic and just abt security and making medical decisions, she could have had Tim do power of attorney over him for medical/financial decisions- and the boy- and legal guardian after his death. She still could have stayed at his house as a live in caretaker/friend if it was also abt being there 24/7. It didn't have to be a marriage unless part of her wanted it. Even if John came back early before Tim died, he's obv the type of man that would've understood and even helped. She needed to be needed romantically and needed a relationship/companionship- even if it wasn't like what she had w John. Loneliness- which is fine but she's being dishonest to her and him by not admitting that. My husband was military and we've talked abt Dear John letters and he said they should never be truthful abt breaking up w a deployed soldier in combat. That stuff could get him- and others- killed. Even if marrying another guy, keep it to herself- keep writing letters (don't have to be romantic ones) to keep his spirits up- and tell him on his next leave when he's safe to get his mind messed up. Her need to be honest w him is more about her feelings and wanting to be a "good person" and is very selfish, not considering his mental state/safety. Heck, athletes have to have their head right or it could cost the game- imagine war. 😒

So this is normal, just left the guy when she felt like and got her back when she felt like. And Hollywood is portraying it as a love story. It's better to have a pet hamster than the lady like the one portrayed in this new age so called love story.

john was her truly and only love and they were meant to be together, despite of what happened. true love conquered all obstacles once again. the way they hugged each other in the end speaks more than words. such happiness on their faces. was like they both were saying in their minds'' my love'' . i love the ending , bcz they deserved to be together. such a powerful love could only have a happy ending. two of the most beautiful and talented actors with such amazing chemistry, recipe for success. one of the best casting ever made. i'm a man but in the end i couldn't stop crying .
Savannah is lucky despite the fact of what she did to John in the end John still love and accepted her again. But if am John i just move on and find a girl who will love and waited for you unlike Savannah who broke his heart and trust.
In my opinion Savannah show actual love by taking care of those who need it and John show love by understanding her and forgiving and reuniting. Real love is something very big and includes sacrifices

Somewhere I read that this last scene was not originally in the movie and was later recorded and added as the end after they test screened the movie and the test audience did not respond well to the original ending. So with this ending it is more open whether they eventually end up together. The way I see them responding to each other seeing each other again, whether by accident or deliberately meeting here, seems hopeful to me. I suppose that they may have a second chance to end up together and pick up from the path they were originally on.❤️🩹😌

The thing I don't like most about the movie is how much to ending is different from the book. I thought it was good they didn't end up together because I honestly felt like because of what she did she didn't deserve him. Then I watched the movie and saw this ending and was bothered by how different it was. There is an alternate ending on the dvd that is just like the book that I really liked and I wish they had kept that one.

Not all of them; in addition to the previous ones mentioned: Message in a Bottle (1999), The Lucky One (2012), and The Longest Ride (2015). Arguably Safe Haven (2013) may technically be an extra marital affair, however Erin/Katie would have divorced him a long long time ago if she was not afraid of his retaliation. I would make an exception for that one and consider it not being an affair.☺️
Besides, in Dear John, Savannah is not having an affair, unless she cheated on John before she broke up with him. Somehow, I do not think she did. Mind you, I have seen the movies and have not read any of the books.

What a stupid ending. If he had any self respect, he would have just walked away. As a combat veteran, I would have never given her one second of my day after what she did while he was deployed. Absolute cruelty on her selfish part.
One thing I loved about this movie and what I saw was the love she showed to him and Alan. Even though she married someone else you have to read between the lines. It’s so much more then her marrying tim.
