Shinty has rules closer to soccer than field hockey, and is the ancestor of both ice hockey and bandy but played on grass. In fact, the Nottinham Football Club in England used to be the Nottinham Football and Bandy Club.

I give you just one story - ice hockey was introduced to USSR in late 1940's, with all players coming from bandy and the Soviet national team became one of the best in the world within only a few years. This was possible only thanks to skating skills and stick technique the players brought from bandy (such as playing stick with one hand at high speed).

Played this in Norway. Could be a big hit in the states if it wanted to be, faster yet easier to follow than hockey, and much higher scoring.
I just wish they had a behind-the-net play in Bandy imagine all of the collisions on the boards and the deflections on the way to the net XD
