What Koenigsegg Jesko's New Record Can Teach the Entire Car Industry

  • Koenigsegg just broke a world record with their Jesko Absolut hypercar. They managed to get from 0 - 400 kmh to 0 again in 27.83 seconds. I-ll let that sink in for a second.
0 - 400 kmh or 248mph was done in 18.82 seconds. That is less time than it takes the Honda Civic Type R, which is by no means a slow car to get to 200 km/h.
This very record of 0-400-0 was taken from Koenigsegg in May of 2023 by the Rimac Nevera. that managed to do the feat in 29.93. Of course Koengisegg couldn’t let that stand so just a month later they took their hybrid hypercar Regera to a smoother runway put more extreme tires on it and posted a time of 28.81.
That record stood until this week when the Jesko managed to do 27.83.
Of course, the Koenigsegg Jesko costs 3 million dollars so this kind of performance is expected and this record would be just another feat of uber expensive hypercar upmanship if the previous two record holders were not a hybrid and a battery electric vehicle.
The Jesko is not a hybrid, it has nothing but a mid-mounted internal combustion engine to drive the wheels and it has less power than both of the previous record holders.
So how did the Jesko manage to beat the record? Wll if the answer was not more power, than it must be less mass. Because by having less mass to lug around you can accelerate and decelerate faster. And indeed the Jesko is 910 kilograms lighter than the Rimac and 200 kilograms lighter than the Regera.
And how do you become lighter? By becoming more simple. For a hypercar of this day and age the Jesko is remarkably simple. Unlike the Rimac which has an electric motor on each wheel, the Jesko only drives the rear wheels. And it has no clever crankshaft mounted or wheel shaft mounted electric motors like in the Regera. There are no e-turbos either. The only battery is the 12 volt one and the Aero is inactive…no clever moving wings , just two solid fixed winglets in the back.
Of course it still needs big power to achieve crazy speeds but the approach to power is kinda old school too. 5.0 liter flatplane V8 with two giant turbos and a remarkably low compression ratio for this day and age. Just 9:1. Why so low? So they could stuff 2.2 bar boost down the throat of each cylinder bank.
And that’s it. Of course there’s all the carbon and the clever suspension and the uber clever transmission. But overall, compared to the previous record holders the Jesko adopts the approach of Less is More…an approach the rest of the auto industry, and even the world seems to have forgotten.
The Jesko had a goal. The goal was more acceleration, reaching a top speed faster and them coming to a stop from that top speed more quickly. It achieved this goal by shedding everything that it didn’t need and perfecting everything it did need.
The auto industry today, and many other industries also have a goal. At least they claim to have a goal. And that goal is the reduction of emissions. The reduction of our carbon footprint.
So if our goal is to emit less of something, wouldn’t Jesko’s approach of less is more be applicable here?

I think the biggest and most important lesson to learn from Elon Musk, is that you shouldn't describe someone at the head of a company as a genius at anything.
Sure, maybe Christian is an engineering genius. But what is far more likely is that he hires people who are really good at their job (engineering) and really good thinking outside of conventions.
Maybe everything in the Koenigsegg TFG from idea, to design, to engineering prototypes, to final product was 100% done by Christian. Maybe he simply asked his engineers "we have this Freevalve system, how small could we make an engine if we want it to make 600 hp?" and his engineers did everything else. We don't know.
But I, for one, don't want to see him go down the Elon Musk route of spewing absolute nonsense to his fanboys with no one willing to correct him on it. E.g.
      > Due to the nature of Cybertruck, which is made of bright metal with mostly straight edges, any dimensional variation shows up like a sore thumb.
      > All parts for this vehicle, whether internal or from suppliers, need to be designed and built to sub 10 micron accuracy.
      > That means all part dimensions need to be to the third decimal place in millimeters and tolerances need be specified in single digit microns. If LEGO and soda cans, which are very low cost, can do this, so can we.
      > Precision predicates perfectionism.

(Full disclosure: I'm related to Christian by marriage.) One of the big differences is humility. Christian is a brilliant engineer, and he's in this for the challenge of making rolling works of mechanical art. He always has been. He is not known to play politics, be self-aggrandizing, or in any way egotistical. I think those qualities ate unlikely to change. A few years ago when I was in Ängelholm, he had a group of schoolchildren visit the factory for a visit. Christian patiently explained everything in terms they could understand, even getting down on the floor with them. I can't imagine that from Elon. The Japanese found out the hard way in the 90s that most people don't buy new and those that do weren't buying their cars, in America mainly, this saw them pivot from the 90s simple cars to add more "features" as that's how you sell to American car owners and now this has over taken the whole market. The type of person that buys new buys it for it being "better" than older cars so "features" became the way of doing this. Plus Features justified higher prices as cars became cheaper to build. The car he describes isn't profitable as you are competing for the type of customer who would buy a 10-20 year old car and doesn't want to buy new. This may change in 10 years when the last of the 90s cars become unaffordable and collectable but at least until then they likely won't sell

This kind of concept is kinda why I ended up buying a shitty hyundai accent last time I went car shopping. Very few bells and whistles, just four doors and 50mpg. The downside is that because it's meant to be a cheap car, the engineering and materials are cheap. The steering rack is about as robust as a paper bag and it broke going over a pothole at 25mph. They only seem to make these kinds of no-frills cars for cheap people with cheap expectations, so the standards are bottom-of-the-barrel. I think a lot of people want to be able to buck this trend, but what options do they have? There's very little middle-ground. It's either disposable or gargantuan.

Instead of a metal rod attached to the door lock, companies will opt to save a fraction of a penny with a bit of wiring and a switch. Something also tells me you haven't gone through the headache of replacing a window motor or regulator... These are things I never have to deal with on my daily. Plus learning to actually drive without relying on ABS or traction control forces you to have proper pedal control, which makes a better driver. fewer systems to fail generally means less failures. If people want such features, I say let them have those things, but the options for newer vehicles for people like me that don't want those features are zero.

ABS is one of those things you THINK makes you a better driver until you have a sudden emergency and your monkey brain has no time to think "pedal control" and you just slam the brakes and just keep sliding. Ask me how I know, I drove without ABS for years and nearly shit myself when someone suddenly pulled in front of me and the wheels just locked up.
Easy to talk when you have time to think, when you don't you'll wish you had ABS, it has saved me from a very bad situation with a heavy truck on a road with a fuel spill downhill.

Well, as an automotive journalist I can say only one thing about this: that car exists, but it seems like everybody forgot about it.
It's a Suzuki Swift in its last generation and basically has everything you're talking about. I know 994 kg is not 800, but it's really not that bad. It has new 1,2l DualJet engine (naturally aspirated, 3 pistons and hella lot of compression ratio and 40 percent thermal efficiency), really small and lightweight mild-hybrid drivetrain (some 0,036 kWh under the driver's seat) and basically you can run on the highwayish 130 km/h for around 4,6 l/100 km with 5spd manual (precise as hell, reminds me of the first skoda fabia). Not exceeding 115 km/h you can easily get to 3,8 or so. And it has all the bells and whistles and finally even also some sound insulation that Suzuki apparently hated so much last few years. Handles very well (indeed), doing proper moose test around the track, it was very close to fabulous last gen Honda Civic. Oil filter the same as Peugeot 106 and it's making 98-99 g CO2 in combined WLTP. Testing it last week, i was stunned. Finally something different! So if you can, get your hands on one and try it! You'll be smiling ear to ear... as I was. :D
But that being said, it's a pity that Suzuki is apparently the only one doing this kind of stuff for the European market. And last but not least, i really really appreciate your work. A++ stuff, really!

So we trade higher fuel costs (which is fairly cheap compared to Europe) for one large vehicle for a lower overall TCO. Reform licensing and insurance billing, and that could change.

Right, my response to his confusion on the popularity of crossovers is safety, both in terms of federal requirements and the preference of car buyers to sit higher and feel less liable to die in a collision. The safety of making cars bulkier is kind of dumb, but the auto makes tried to fight it and American consumers at large didn't care.

This is only half true. For a single household yes, but how many single households have more than 1 car? Households with multiple people having only one car be allowed to drive at a time is silly.
In Austria here we can have one license plate for multiple cars and we pay the tax and insurance of the most expensive one. It kinda sucks when you have a 65 hp car for commuting and a 300 hp sports car but oh well that's Europe.

Dead simple, no larger than it needs to be, and stupidly useful (I've helped move family at least half a dozen times, and any time someone gets anything large the truck gets called on). Unfortunately, CAFE regulations mean that permissible emissions are largely determined by the size and weight of a vehicle, essentially killing off trucks like mine. Even the modern equivalents of the Ranger and Colorado are the size of full-size trucks from the late 90's and early 2000's, because it's easier for them to pass emissions at that size.

I’m sure many people would choose it but there is less profit in them so we are offered basically what manufacturers want us to buy. Regulations don’t help either, imposing more and more obligatory safety equipment whether we want or not.

You hit the nail on the head with this one!!
I've been saying all this for years now.
BTW I would just add that crossovers and SUV don't just have inferior aerodynamics, compared to "regular" models they are based on. They are also waaaaay less safe. They are in most cases based on the same chassis, which is what actually protects you in a case of the accident, but at the same time they are less agile, have higher center of mass, longer stopping distance.... when added all the things you mentioned in the video like more mass and size, it just means that in critical situation you are less likely to be able to avoid accident in SUV/crossover, and when you get into it, you'll hit with more speed, carrying more weight, while having exactly the same chassis to protect you. This actually means the you'll cause more damage to other car you hit, but also more damage to your car, despite having larger and heavier vehicle, which people think will protect them.
Also new BMW M5 was another perfect example of this stupidity.
And even Nevera.... it should have been high performance focused car, but instead they decided to add a lot of unnecessary weight with all the autonomous driving stuff, AI track driving assistance/instructor, face recognition, satelite/GSM connectivity, cameras, radars, sensors, actual supercomputers(Nvidia Tesla from almost 20 years ago, I think) to run it all etc. that no one who actually buys such a car is interested in.
Being EV, it was inevitable that it will be heavy, but they really added a lot on top of it that no one actually cares about. All this tech should have been introduced in some other, luxury car from one of their numerous partners.
This is all painfully obvious when you see Nevera Nurburgring performance. It's a bullet in the straight line, but carries no speed at all through curves and despite being fastest road-legal EV, it's still left in the dust by ICE cars with 5x less power, and it needs new set of tires after every lap as all that mass pretty much cooks them after half a lap.
If it was more focused on actual performance, it would probably still hold the Ring EV record by quite a margin, it would still probably be faster than Regera and Jesko in 0-400-0 and it would be sold out, instead of only having 1/3 of the planned production cars being sold so far.
People who are willing to give more than 2 million dollars for a performance car, want the fastest car possible in all aspects, not just dragstrip stuff... what they don't care about is AI driving instructor... they can hire the real and better one, they don't care about face recognition entry, 20+ cameras in and around the car, self driving(that will never probably be full self-driving anyway) etc....
