    30 minute late running 12672 Mettupalayam/Coimbatore-Chennai Central Nilagiri Express finishes-off its journey in the early morning.
    Chennai Central, erstwhile Madras Central, is the main railway terminus in the city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras. It lies adjacent to the current headquarters of the Southern Railway, as well as the Ripon Building, and is one of the most important railway hubs in South India. The other major railway hub stations in the city are Chennai Egmore and Tambaram. Chennai Central connects the city to New Delhi and prominent cities of India such as Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram, and so forth. The 138-year-old building of the railway station, one of the most prominent landmarks of Chennai, was designed by architect George Harding.Along with Chennai Beach, the station is also a main hub for the Chennai Suburban Railway system.
    Chennai Central railway station is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city that is often featured in movies and other pop culture in the region. The station has been used in numerous Indian novels and film and television productions over the years. Many films and television programs have been filmed at the station.
    Nilgiri Express train is named after the Nilgiri (Tamil / Hindi / Sanskrit: English - (Nil - Blue; giri - Mountain)) Hills. The train is primarily intended for travellers to these hills, especially to the towns of Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri. Mettupalayam is near Coimbatore, which is at the foot of these hills, and the Nilgiri Express links to the Nilagiri passenger train operated by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) at Mettupalayam station, enabling passengers to complete the journey to Udagamandalam by rail. Mettupalayam also has numerous road links to various parts of the Nilgiri hills via the Nilgiri Ghat Roads. This train is a slip express as most of the coaches are detached in the Coimbatore junction and they are denoted with coimbatore as the originating station.
    This train had a dark blue colored rake distinctly spottable from other trains till 1997/98 when all the other trains had Maroon/brick colored coaches.When the rake color of the other train changed for conversion to Vacuum brakes even this train got the same color as the other trains.There is nightly overnight service in both directions.Train number 12671 runs from Chennai to Mettupalayam, while train number 12672 runs from Mettupalayam to Chennai.
