That knife was my first bushcrafting knife, back in the 80s, it was great! Lasted my many years. Took a beating but tough as nails.
Great knife. It is simple, but simple things are often the best. This Green River would be a good companion to a tomahawk or hatchet. I bought one from a dealer in the Northern Territory (Australia), and it comes with a croc skin sheath that the dealer had handcrafted, as the knife as is does not come with a sheath. So, what I have now is a mix of good old fashioned American and Australian cutlery traditions, and the whole thing still serves me well.
Green River knives started to be made in 1836, in Green River Massachusetts. By 1836 the era of the mountain mad was coming to an end. It didn't last long. I have four different styles of Green River knives and I use them in my kitchen at least twice if not three times a week. Great all around knives. I got my first one, back in the late 70's as a kit and I still have it. Some have called it the original Bushcraft knife, but that term didn't even exist back in the day. But yes, I would use one for every thing camp and out door wise, except chopping and battoning wood. I always have a tomahawk or hatchet with me, when I camp.
I can't believe I forgot about this knife. It has a great history and if you read the book Blood Meridian it's referenced in there.
i use this knife to cut fish with and i will tell you it’s the best there is for it. Cuts straight through bones or anything. love it

I love my Green River too. Great knife for cleaning small to medium size fish. Not the best filet knife, but it will get the job done. I very seldom if ever filet a panfish. Great knife for skinning and gutting catfish. Super sharp out of box. Love all my Dexter Russell’s.

I have four of them. They don't come with a sheath. I make mine using heavy tooling leather, and copper horse tack rivets, also stitched with artificial sinew. Just tuck it into a belt, in the small of your back "Mountain Man " style. Nothing fancy, but tough and functional.
These weren't around in the beaver fur era, but later in the 19th Century, accompanied many going West, to settle, hunt buffalo, prospect for minerals, etc.,etc.
I have a green river butchers knife that my grandfather gave to my dad. My great grandfather owned a butcher shop and my grand worked in it, he was a very skilled butcher and years after they closed shop, people would bring animals to my grandfather’s farm to be butchered.
Nice and simple knife! I like it. And...bonus that it’s made in the US!
I had one in the 80s and still do. I did a dumb thing and tried throwing it. I broke the tip off and had to reshape it. Still keeps a great edge and works for tasks not needing the sharp point.
My first choice for a camp knife , I’ve carved spoons with it , spatulas , and I’m sure I could carve a fork with it if I took my time . I’ve shaved with it , and it cuts meat and veggies like a champ . Never tried to baton wood with it , I suppose you could , but that’s what I keep a camp axe for .
Like you , I had to put the dremmel tool to it to get a good sharp square spine and I hit the grip panels with some Emory cloth to knock off some sharp edges , then soaked em down with boiled Lind seed oil .
Once in a blue moon I’ll have to hit it with the strop to keep that razor edge .
P.S. I think its a better design then the Kephart, because it has a very nice point. Makes it easier to pierce things like fish, when cleaning them. Just cleaned up mine today. Still looks great even after 40+ years.

They make great knives for kitchen/butcher/fish/utility use they are quite sharp from the factory and take abuse and great price.

That’s the only size wood you should be baton I gotta, if you must, for kindling. Carry a hatchet/tomahawk/ax.

Great vid good knife but you did criticize the overseas knives,Mora knives are Scandinavian eg.Swedish 1095 high carbon steel Mora companion knife is between 10 and 15 dollars.Martini knives in the same price range.I have Falkniven Helle knives with curly birch handles and these super steel blades yet I bring my Mora companion with me for Deer hunting and field dressing Deer.I see you have the hopps no9. Bore cleaning fluid so I'm guessing you're a hunter also.Stay safe.

Good knife, but the handle is too small for XL glove sized hands. People were smaller in the 1840s, they need to update the design.
Hey there looks like a great knife. Are there any sheath options for this knife so we could carry it into the woods?
I knew there was something I forgot to mention in the video lol.. Yeah this knife does not come with a sheath, but I am planning on having one made at a local survival store we have here. They do make lots of sheaths for it, and its a pretty standard size so it fits into a few I have already. I will update on the knife once I get it all done, perhaps in a month or so of using it to see how its holding up! Mora garberg first came out in a stainless model, 4c28n something, $100, yuck, but then the carbon ones came out the peeps dumped the stainless ones for $50 shipped...these have dried up, Russells are back to the cheap but good enough knifes winners!!
AND the russell net knifes(3.5 and 4 inch), they SHRED cardboard, after 30 minutes of cutting, 5 light strokes on a $10 800 grit amazon stone(on the flat side of serrations), can do another 30 minutes, and the handles are better than almost any razor knife. I order 5 at a time, about $6 each WOW.

I know I'm 5 years late, still Do Not force a patina on your knife. That's the stolen valor of the knife world. Trying to pawn it off for something that it is not.
