    I have backpacked from the age of 16 and have had great adventures, I always felt that I struggled in the mountains physically but my mental strength always carried me through but now I know why , I have now at the ripe old age of 60 found out that I have a heart defect from birth , as of now I'm waiting for urgent open heart surgery , I miss the mountains so much , the wind , the smell of heather , hopefully after the OP I will gain fitness to carry on , my mental age is about 30 😁 . You see Tom people like you give hope to people like me , by watching you it gives me that feeling of adventure back that I long for , I wish you a speedy recovery and keep up the good work 👍

      Hi Dave, thank you for this lovely message. I am sorry to hear that you have physical limitations to doing something that you love very much. I suppose when you are feeling crap you don't realise that other people are feeling the same too and you are not the only one... BUT with the right mental attitude you will not live forever but you can recover and do so much more than giving up. I thought I may not be able to do this again and have to sell my tents but the tide has turned in my favour and I am building on the positives..It's tough too waiting on an op or medication to work but of you look at your condition as temporary it really helps. Progress is never straight up its always ups and down but more ups that downs. This was a very short walk in for me but it was still out in the wilderness and gave me that adventure feeling that is hard to beat. With a mental age of 30 then you are in a great place to impact positively on your health condition... Here is a link to my FB if you want to message me anytime. ATB TOM facebook.com/tom.heaney.144

      @@TOMHEANEY100 After watching probably every Hilleberg tent review on CZcams I am still going around in circles about which one to get. However, I will be going to Nordic Outdoors in Richmond early in the new year to test a couple out in person. I think I am now being converted to the black label. So if the slope at the back of the Nammatj 2/3 is workable at my height I am veering over to that one now! I have been having an enjoyable headache deciding but all your videos really do offer great insight. I just don't think one tent is going to be enough!!🤣

    Great stuff Tom! I've looked at Zpacks over the years (mainly the duplex), simply because I'm not a kid anymore and I want to reduce base weight! The jury is still out on these (especially this one!), though having watched many through-hikers swear by them I certainly don't doubt the build quality, and being a trekking pole user these designs suit me. I salute you for getting out again under the medical circumstances! Great review, and take care....atb Sinco

    Tom, I sent some 0.51 DCF to a Backpackinglight tester and he tested it to around 30,0000mm of H20 pressure. This was a brand new piece of DCF, so it will decrease in performance, but that is amazing performance. Imagine what 0.74 DCF is! In long duration rains I have no worries with DCF.
    PS you can get the pitch lower, just lower the pole! It takes some practice, but the gear is worth it.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 2 lety

      Hey Matt, sorry for the late reply but Currently on hols... That's great to hear about the Hydrostatic Head with the DCF. It's my first time with this fabric and it definitely feels a bit special. I loved the design too with its strength volume combination and would buy one if it had a solid inner and closer to ground pitch.. Yeah I did lower the pole and that helped but tried to set it up as recommended height from ZPacks themselves and also how it looked on their video... I seriously appreciate your comments especially as a CZcams content creator yourself with fantastic subscribers. It's hard to watch and get the time to comment on others videos when you are trying to manage your own.... ATB Tom

  • @MattShafter
    @MattShafter Před 2 lety +3

    If you want more warmth, there's no question, put the CCF pad on top. The reason being is the CCF pad has extremely small pockets of air in it. That air is what is doing the actual insulating, the foam if just there to trap the air. So, those little CCF air pockets don't churn around like the air in a large inflatable does. In other words, in an air pad, air molecules can travel all through the pad, and can move to colder areas of the pad. Not so with CCF, the air molecules stay close to your body (you're the radiator) and thus stay warm.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 2 lety

      Hey Matt, I really appreciate this comment an excellent detail thank you. I remember reading the best way somewhere but couldn't actually remember the outcome. I have always the CCF on top as I feel its more comfortable. The foam helps to dampen some of the bouncy Ness on a predominantly air filled mat... And as I said if Eric Nomak does it then there must be some logic.. Here though on the DCF ground sheet it was just too slippy for the Uberlight so I had to have the CCF on the bottom. Thank you for sharing your detailed knowledge for me and other readers. I hope that you are well. ATB Tom

      Hi Gary I hope that all is good with you. I appreciate you watching and commenting once again on this video. This tent is definitely at the other end of the scale compared to your Expedition Super Quasar.. I think the outer is so short to reduce weight and help ventilation as the single skin non breathable fabric could definitely be very prone to big condensation. You know how people love to complain if there is even a single drop if it... ATB Tom

      I do add in a sound effect in my edit to make the Soto or any stove I use sound more powerful. Not to deceive in any way but just to make things a bit more interesting by the sound effect. Its called the flame thrower sound effect ha ha. To be fair it is a great little stove and can handle itself when its windy or cold. I really appreciate your positive comments on my reviews and health status. I just decided to discuss what I hadn't been camping as doing back garden reviews and only reviews but little actual camping is not really what its all about for me. The mini 2 is an awesome drone and I was so close to buying one. In fact even after I had ordered the Air 2 s I almost changed my mind. But for me it comes down to the wind thing again and its actually difficult to fly a drone in the Mournes due to this. So this was the first time I had it out in the Mournes and it managed no bother. I even flew it up along side me so I didn't have to carry the extra weight... Thank you for the comment re my heart its much appreciated. ATB Tom

    Hey tom,great vid as per normal!must admit i did wonder why you hadnt been out on the hills.I assumed it was because of covid and restriction and the hassle associated with it.Glad to hear you are on the mend.I think the tent would be a great 3 season tent,even in windy wet conditions you could pull your gear into the centre away from the edges and keep it relatively dry.I wouldnt fancy it in windy snow conditions i think the spindrift would be a pain.On a positive note you could probably build a snowman in your vestibule without getting out of your sleeping bag.Keep up the great reviews tom!

      Hey Stuart, love the sense of humour re the snow man ha ha.. I love spindrift but not when it starts to penetrate inside your tent. It would get everywhere here and ball up the mesh too. I am not a big fan of pushing 3 season tents into 4 seasons but this managed here very well and is doable for sure.. I really appreciate your comments re my health status. Its been hard enough but enjoyed doing gear reviews to keep me going. Now I can start back reviewing kit when I actually field tents it in the mountains... ATB Tom

    Hello, thanks for the video. Coming straight to the point, I see massive problems in rougher conditions with stronger winds compared with snow fall. I suspect the flysheet and the mesh does not stop any snow from blowing inside the tent from any side of it. But you should be fine as long as the wind conditions don’t get too gnarly. DCF is pretty strong and waterproof , it’s just the ventilation concept that disqualifies this tent to be a safe 4 season solution. Another improvement of a 3 season tent could be external tent poles like on a Zpacks DupleXL or like on the Tarptent Scarp 1. Those tent poles provide a massive improvement in terms of wind resistance.I would like to see an update video as soon you’ve gained some date with snow and stronger wind conditions. Cheers

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  Před rokem

      Hi Andreas thank you for the points that you raised.. Unfortunately no update coming regarding snow resistance as I cannot possibly own all the tents that I review.. This one like most was borrowed and now back to its owner.. I am also not prepared to test someone else's tent to the limit as I am sure you can understand. My own tents no problem such as the BL Soulo and Nammatj. Yeah exposure to high winds and snow wouldn't go too well with this tent due to its design and points that you mentioned.. It is quite strong and would suit some 4 season conditions but not in an exposed location... Wind and blowing snow not a good combination here.. You can lower the pole and shovel snow on top of the bottom of the fly but then you have no ventilation.. The 4 season concept is very vague I suppose and means different things to different people.. I am sure the tent could survive 40 to 50mph winds but not a comfortable night for sure.. I own a Lanshan 2 pro and update my camping thoughts in the video description.. ATB Tom

    Reminds me of my (hugely cheaper) Lanshan 1 Pro, no slouch at 690g (plus maximum 10 stakes). Paradoxically, I bought it for stealth camping in my local countryside (the Chilterns) during lockdown. However, I've been pleasantly surprised by how far I can push its limits into a moderate 3-season mountain setting. Mids rock!

    Very nice job Tom. Great to see you fit and healthy enough to venture out again. An interesting tent. Certainly more of a 3-season piece of kit. The ventilation is good, until the weather turns cold then it would be very drafty. Would lowering the pole make a difference?

    Not sure about that specific tent to be honest, but I really do fancy some sort of pyramid style, and have for a while! They seem strong in the wind, moreover I like that you can sometimes switch inners for mesh/solid depending on the season.

      Hi Mike, thank you for watching and your comments. This tent is a bit high even for me so I agree with you. I was impressed with it in the wind as the fabric doesn't stretch so it stands very solid. As you say they do offer great flexibility re the different inner options on some models. Yeah I probably read somewhere not to inflate by blowing directly into it but hopefully it won't come to too much harm.... ATB and hope you are getting out camping in your Ultra Quasar. Tom

Yeah I moved some of my gear inside the inner in case it got blown away! The gap was a bit frustrating but I managed and was actually very comfortable once the wind direction changed. When so much of this tent is about the low weight and high internal volume the less actual fabric the better to keep the weight down. I decided to share the health issue as its been a big thing for me and gutted for a year having to make back garden reviews at not being able to get in the mountains and do them out especially in harsh conditions. Hi Jasper thank you again for watching and commenting on one of my videos. Yes this is an interesting tent and I really liked it even though I was very unsure about the single skin and the fact that the tent doesn't come close to the ground... For 3 season use if I was someone who used walking poles already then its a definite winner due to 600g weight and internal volume. If you add the weight of a walking pole (if you don't already use one) then the weight creeps up towards 900g and that brings the option of a few other tents close to that weight range.. Flip I am struggling to decide between this and the Enan... You know its the Zpacks I am afraid. The DCF feels super special, love the triangle design and look and it is actually pretty good in the wind. The interior volume is a luxury and I had no issues at all with condensation... ATB and thank you for this very thought provoking question to a Hilleberg fanboy... Tom

      @TOMHEANEY100  Před 11 měsíci

      Yes as the fabric is very strong then options to double pole would be great on DCF trekking pole tents... I think the poles are potentially a weakness as they are not really designed for supporting tents in high wind... They may have large diameters but the pole walls are very thin and dont really flex like a proper tent pole... best wishes and thank you for the comment.. Tom

    To reduce the gap between the tent and the ground, all you have to do is hit the sticks closer to the tent .. and it is not recommended to pitch the tent next to a creek / river as it is always a bit colder and the humidity is also higher..

      Hi Karl, thank you for this comment and sorry to take so long to get back.... My heart issues started in my mid 30s so no link with vaccines.. I too have worried a tremendous amount about my heart and over the years and this really does not help. Its so hard to put it to the back of your mind when its potentially so serious but any issued that you have will definitely not be helped by worry.... I have worried so many times about nothing and got it wrong. I understand that this makes me feel more unwell and I don't want to feel unwell so I have got my thoughts under control which really helps. When you do have a physical issue with your heart in my experience it takes a few months to heal so hopefully you are on the road to recovery and your mental attitude towards this can 100 percent help or hinder...
