  • At the ripe age of 46, I decided to try rollerskating for the first time. Full disclosure, I come from a rollerblading background, so I expect as smooth a transition to learning to rollerskate as this old body allows. Earlier this summer, I picked up a pair of Karma Pro skates from @Chaya Skates so I could start skating at some of the local parks here. I've been intrigued by the meshing of the inline and quad communities, so wanted to better understand their sport by understanding the fundamentals of the skates.

      Yes it's amazing! They are basketball courts at the university. No one is ever there. The ground is perfect, view is fanastic, it has waxed ledges around it and there is a shitty skatepark about 10 feet away next to it.

    Be careful on those ankle-breakers, buddy! I've tried quads and that was all I could think about the whole time lol. Hats off to folks who can skate ramps and vert on quads, it's horrifying to me.

      They didn’t feel to bad on frontsides , but moving forward I think I want to focus on quad specific tricks, not inline tricks on quads. I agree, Ramps do seem super scary. Haha.

      I’m contemplating going quads myself after almost a decade of aggressive in-line and the question I’m trying to get answered everywhere is, how is ankle support on the Karma (or the Parkstar) when it comes to tricks like unity and royales? Do you have personal experience?

    Hey Jan, yep enjoyed this one! did you put any kind of heel-raise bed in, as they look really flat, was there any backwards falling feeingl? I'm thinking of getting the Chaya Cappuccino's. Love what your doing!! Frank podcast was wicked!

    • @JanWelch
      @JanWelch  Před rokem

      I'm glad you liked Franks's podcast! And thanks for watching these videos!. For these skates, I did not put any hell-raise beds in them. They are flat and they don't feel too different compared to my inline skates (currently on ag10/ag20) as far as leaning backward. However. The back wheels are farther under your foot, so falling backward seems like something that could happen, especially coming into a quarter pipe. I will need to get used to the skates before attempting ramp skating.

      Hey Jan, thanks for the reply!that's really helpful. And geat skating dude! Having tried quads for the first time in May this year at dope jam skate event here in the UK, its challenging to say the least. Skatepark is next level! Happily my wife tried skating quads and loved it so we now go out and skate when we can. I'm riding THEMS 909s and and having a good time! keep shredding man!😎

      They are the Chaya XTNDR medium-wide truck, which has now been replaced by the Chaya Pro Park Forged. The concept was that you could have narrow, medium or wide axels and you can still buy the other 2 axels online in most places. They were forged not cast.

    You're crazy ;-) I've ridden quads a lot when I was a kid, I would never go back to it. They have no advantage on blades except for aesthetics. They are more dangerous (ankle and fall backward) and you'll never have the same control than with inlines. Even pros in quads have a pretty sketchy style. Also the front stopper is a real inhibiting factor in term of progress has you'll always see quads skater use them for security when landing, this is the equivalent of kicking your board away in skateboarding. You've to commit to progress.

    • @dolphinuppercut
      @dolphinuppercut Před rokem

      Interesting perspective on aggressive quads vs aggressive inline skates. I definitely feel you on some of these points, like the advantage of front/back stability (wheelbase) and ankle support. There's holes in the logic saying there's "no advantage except aesthetics."
      The utility of the toe stop is an advantage within itself, and can be customized to be less obstructive. The "inhibiting factor" itself is a subjective perspective, as it ultimately depends on the goals of each individual skater, and the goals for each trick or line. It's not seen often (yet) but aggressive quad skaters, like jam skaters, are starting to incorporate toe stop slides in a manner similar to cess slides, undoubtedly a "trick" in aggressive skate canon.
      We can't forget, "committing to a trick," while often heralded as a gold standard of the aggressive-style, is not objectively a good thing. Brian Shima admits he "commit" to the Leap-of-Faith," and the stunt ultimately ended his career immediately after joining a new skate team. A safe bail-option, in some cases COULD be considered a crutch, but in a utilitarian sense, serves a specific utility.
      Truck width is another clear advantage. Montre showed off some jam-style footwork during his acclaimed Quad Cup performance. This is a small example of style choices and maneuvering made easier by using trucks.

      @@dolphinuppercut A few more remarks on the subject.
      When we transitioned to inline in the 90s, one of my friend was a very good hardcore rollerskater (skated vert ramp) and didn't want to relearn everything. As we had rec skates with antis for a while we were jealous of his wide trucks and sliding block. But once Majestics and Fattys came out and we got to street skating he could not keep up. He tried using blading boots on quads but that's just a work around that didn't work well. Finally quit skating.
      By the way Taïg Khris was a super good rollerskater before inline, he used to 720 in eagle stance. That's a way of riding you cannot really reproduce in inline. I can air a ramp in eagle stance but it's not that stable. But still, it's a pretty silly way of trying to reproduce skateboarding with skates.
      I'm all for the current trend of quads but let's face it it has more to do with fashion, tribes and way of life statement. My guess is that quads skater who are really into tricks will eventually move to inline. Part of them will probably develop different tricks a bit like flat land skateboarding. And 80% of them will just loose interest in a year or two for the new trend, like it happened with blading in the 90s. The real force of quads, granted it's a very cynical point of view, is that it is very marketable and that you can sell a LOT of byproducts around the culture, there is a lot more money to make than in blading (given that rec and fitness blading have basically disappeared)

      @@cfronin I hear you, as always, trends ebb and flow.
      I would argue that as quad skating has survived as a sport this far, especially in the jam scene, the survival of aggressive quad skating would depend on the skaters leaning into their own trick vocabulary, and evolving the sport leaning on the strength of quad skates, as opposed to only trying to imitate aggressive skate trick vocabulary, again, using Montre's Quad Cup performance as an example of someone pushing the limits of a medium and leaning into its strengths at the same time.
