    Hey, Antony, it's Nick. How goes it?
    Gonna nitpick here, Toda Takatora didn't control Iga until AFTER Sekigahara. 1581, Oda Nobunaga's son Nobukatsu was the lord of Iga as his father's proxy. When Hideyoshi took over, he gave Nobukatsu the boot and put Tsutsui Junkei in charge, who the Iga mono hated almost as much as they had hated the Miyoshi clan. During Sekigahara, Junkei's heir stayed neutral, and forbid the Iga mono from fighting, so when Ieyasu became Shogun, he gave the Tsutsui the boot and put the Todo clan in charge.
    Take care, and stay safe from the Rona!

It takes place in a fantastic world known as Rokugan and magic is real. I play a Scorpion clan Shinobi of the Shosuro school that masquerades as an honorable Samurai of the same clan. Anthony I was thinking about your other video from some days ago regarding suggestions as to how to expand your channel. I commented some suggestions on that video but some other ideas came to me. Why dont you do videos regarding history of other places? Why so much focus on Japan? I understand that's what you probably specialize in, but i figure many people here would be interested in other places' history as well.
    Also you can re-do some old videos from the past years regarding Samurai/Ninja other stuff in a comprehensive manner, because so many ppl in the channel might be new.
    Another point: adding pictures/ drawings which carry some historical accuracy would make the video look more attractive.
    I personally would like a comprehensive video regarding the full history of feudalism in Japan, the power hierarchy, and how it came to end.
    Other suggestions: different eras of Persia, Ottoman empire, Mongolians and their attack and Japan..you get the idea.

    The question was pretty intresting, and you know anthony, that Iga existed before nobunaga. Also they have really facinating history there, with an alternative society, and their own issues. (Without the ninja fearytales too) but you immediatly jumped , to the talking points, told by every book, hattori hanzo and nobunaga etc . And general samurai history. Do you have any information, about the iga society, their hierarchies, and founding fathers. After all, they governed themselvesfor over 100years, eventhough other daimyos did too, in sengoku era
    Thanks for good content

      I'm coming into this two years, too late, but I'm trying to watch some of Anthony's older videos to send to a friend of mine who's working on a book.
      Anyways, what is the history of the Iga mono? Iga for most of its history was pretty typical of any other Japanese province. It was considered a "small land", and during the Heian period, it was mostly run by the Ise Taira clan (The Heidi clan), the enemies of the Minamoto clan (The Genji clan). Many of the Iga mono in later periods would claim lineage to the Ise Taira because of this. When the Taira clan fell off and the Minamoto clan came into power and established the Kamakura Shogunate, the local samurai clans in Iga became manor lords either for the Shogunate or for the neighboring Buddhist temples like Todaiji, who had a lot of power. There is an infamous incident where one powerful samurai family living in Iga outright rebelled against the Todaiji temple. This incident is called "the Kuroda Manor Riots".
      During the late 1200s-early 1300s, the then Japanese emperor Godaigo was planning to restore political power back to the imperial court, and you see some samurai from Iga supporting his cause (This is in the Taiheiki). Later in the 14th century, there would come to be two imperial courts and a huge conflict all across Japan. You see samurai from Iga in the conflict here and there. This is the time period where Ashikaga Takauji takes power and makes himself shogun.
      The 15th century, the power of the Ashikaga Shogunate is a bit unstable. Iga is under the governship of a man named Yamana Sozen. A succession crisis happens, which leads to a huge war in Kyoto that spreads across the rest of Japan and starts the Warring States period. This might be the earliest time where Iga and Koka samurai start training and engaging in ninjutsu. Iga eventually falls under the governship of the Niki clan, who are related to the Ashikaga.
      16th century, the power of the Shogunate is getting weaker and weaker, and so too is the governship of the Niki clan that the Shogunate put in charge. Iga as a result is becoming a place where bandits and rogue yamabushi start terrorizing the land. The samurai in Iga at this point are growing more independent and are taking charge of protecting the land. They get to a point where they kick the Niki clan out of the province altogether, and set up a local confederacy between the Iga samurai and the leaders of the peasants in each village. 12 people are elected to represent the villages of the land, and they meet regularly in Heirakuji temple to discuss matters.
      From here, Iga is run by the local samurai and the peasant leaders, with sway from the Rokkaku clan in Omi province and the Kitabatake clan in Ise, up until Oda Nobunaga conquers the province in 1581 and turns it into Oda territory.

    • @inthedenoftigers5702
      @inthedenoftigers5702 Před 4 lety

      It may be granular but in the UK some Yeoman were wealthier than minor knights despite having feudal duties that sometimes had them fufill the role of serjents or men at arms and being all but indistinguishable from knights on the battlefield . I can see how for the average onlooker/reader it might be difficult to get across, but I think we have to decide first how to potray samurai. Are they the “warrior class knights” of the rising sun or are they “Landed hierachy” in Japan with military duties to their liege? I veer towards the latter and Yeoman could get across the idea of “rich not peasant but fighter”
