I go to the gym with a support worker who helps keep me on track due to my cognitive and balance issues. My physio has come up with a fantastic program that helps with strengthening (hyper mobility). In the few months I’ve been going with this program I have come a long way.

Most tips you've given apply to most individuals with significant clinical issues. Thank you for your videos!
Its unfortunate, but service teams looking for a gym are often turned away from chain/franchise gyms as the staff are not willing to take on the risk. Operator owned gyms are usually more open to unique circumstances.
Also, depending on the medical/insurance schemes in your area, you might have to engage a professional with training to manage medical conditions (most personal trainers aren't). In Australia they're known as Exercise Physiologists.

Oliver loves the gym! He is naturally shy and introspective. So he is always loving to go. Our gym is really quiet most days. He even learned to sit/lay down near the tread mill. His 2 main ways that he assists me is by guiding and forward momentum (see channel if you want a few more details on why). But this year. After years of being together he alerts to any serious breathing issue before it gets serious. I was born with a hole in my heart and a muscle wrapped around my Aorta. I still have the hole and narrowing. If my Asthma flares so does my heart etc. ... So he blocks my body and becomes pushy pushy till I sit down. (currently trying to attach a knee to paw alert but still working on it) I feel so much safer taking him with me knowing that either way he will tell me earlier than I can tell myself. My biggest tip is to recognize that your dog may be in "ready to alert mode" (even if that is not his/her main task sometimes) So be extra assertive in your needs to not have folks talking or petting your dog. Your health comes first. Also 2nd tip patience is massive. Tread mills and weighted pully machines can be very scary to the best behaved dog. So go when you know traffic is limited at the gym and be extra understanding to your pup. Like a lot of things in life go at a pace that is right for you and your dog. That is not to say that you can not go at busy time, but I would wait to go with pup when they are ready. Oh and have fun! 😄

If trinket and I go to an appointment or to a pLce where I may more around a bit, I bring a small square mat for her :) she knows it as her "place" and knows that that command is similar to a down/stay, once she is there is isnt allowed to leave unless I need her help or she needs to alert me. It's been really helpful for us, she understands and is comfortable with her place mat, and I know I can use it for outings if we are somewhere quiet-ish, like a class at our pool or physio :) great work Jackie!

The university I work at has an autism service dog training program run by students. It is so it's nice to see all of the puppies in training all over the city. It's become a norm to see them training to go on the bus, in classes, stores and the gym. In a way it spreads more awareness and education to the public on service dogs.

I was always so curious about how Harlow does in the gym with you! Unfortunately, I can't take my service dog to the gym because she's natural and is trained to alert to increased heart rate, shaky hands and shortness of breath when I would have anxiety attack. As I would work out, she would detect my heart rate increasing and she would alert to me mistaking that alert as I was doing this on purpose. I personally think its funny! She does try so hard!
Goldens are the best! Harlow has inspired me to get a golden as my service dog. Keep moving forward and being an inspiration to us all!

Some gyms will not allow people to drop weights because they don't have the right kind of floor. I prefer to go to ones that don't have dropping weights because of sensory sensitivity. But I guess you still need to acclimatise Harlow to it because people could still drop equipment accidentally or make a loud noise with a machine.

If you join a gym that has a pool, see if you can leave a dog cot in the pool area for your service dog to lay on while you swim so that they are not Laing on the chemical water the entire time. My gym lets me keep one in the filter room and gets it out each time I come to swim so that my dog isn't getting wet or covered in pool chemicals.

I have an ESA, cat, but she is so very good at alerting me when I am going to have a seizure. My roommate also has a cat but he is not an ESA and still he alerts. My seizures are spiking with the vertigo and the doctors still don't know why. When I come out of a seizure either my cat, or his cat, have been laying on my back. I don't know if they are there through the seizure, but when I wake up one is always there. My cat gets VERY vocal just before my seizure, and she's usually very quiet.

I never thought twice about bringing my dog to the gym haha. but I think that's because my earliest work-out experiences have all been at privately owned gyms (two in a row) that allowed pets during private training sessions. Obviously not crazy pets that would run everywhere, but well trained ones that could hold a down-stay on a yoga mat for an hour. So bringing my service dog felt natural and comfortable. I do the same thing and look for accepting places, and tend to avoid big chains. But that's as much for my own accommodations as my dog. I don't know about you, but I actually find the gym to be a great environment, and much better than a lot of resturants haha

This was fascinating. I’m most interested in how and why Harlow alerts to you. Have you had any fainting spells in the gym? Has Harlow prevented you from fainting? When she does alert for that, do you lie down on the floor, or what works to head off a fainting episode? What about your elevated heart rate? How high does it get, and at what point does Harlow alert, and how do you respond to this information she’s giving you? Have you ever worn a heart monitor or some kind of wrist device to give you this kind of data? I really think it’s interesting how she helps you and I’d love to see her alert in a video some time. Thanks Jacquie!

That nausea can kick in so quick! I don't have gastroparesis, but I have gastritis, IBS, and possible Crohn's disease and I use the orally disintegrating Zofran tablets, too. They are a GODSEND! Before using them, I would get sick so easily. So many doctors don't understand when I say that I need them because, if I have even a tiny tablet sitting in my in my stomach and not dissolving, I'm going to throw up. Insurance can also be a jerk, too, because they limit how much I can have in year. :(

Janice Bird they know their hind legs are there... as in they scratch with them obviously use them for walking, jumping, playing, etc. but they don’t necessarily know WHERE their hind legs end up, like they don’t subconsciously know to lift them or place them in certain areas unless they are made aware of their special awareness. I don’t know if that makes sense..

Totally hear you on the balancing act needed to exercise and stay good. My YMCA is great about it, my dh gives great support and tips as he is exercise physiologist and my physical therapist who tweaks things because of flare-ups. I find some areas are not safe for dogs because of lack of space for my SD
I also have our own mini gym so we practice there. You are right about trusting your SD, mine stands and stares or gives her little wimper until I give in. Even in just a counseling session she just will not down, I try really hard to listen to her because you are so right about not having attacks is awesome. control yes, harnes/leash no.
"The service animal must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered while in public places unless these devices interfere with the service animal's work or the person's disability prevents use of these devices. In that case, the person must use voice, signal, or other effective means to maintain control of the animal. For example, a person who uses a wheelchair may use a long, retractable leash to allow her service animal to pick up or retrieve items. She may not allow the dog to wander away from her and must maintain control of the dog, even if it is retrieving an item at a distance from her. Or, a returning veteran who has PTSD and has great difficulty entering unfamiliar spaces may have a dog that is trained to enter a space, check to see that no threats are there, and come back and signal that it is safe to enter. The dog must be off leash to do its job, but may be leashed at other times."

If someone is so allergic to dogs in public places then they should be proactive to protect themselves. Jaquie or anyone with a service dog have the right to be in these public places as well
