how soon should you start this process with a puppy?

I usually start it gradually and in short sessions, once the hair sticks up long enough to easily grasp with my fingers. In a softer coat this will be at a younger age and in a harder coat it will be later. Generally speaking though, between three and five months is when I typically get going on it with puppies.

any tips for starting stripping on a feisty puppy?

* Keep sessions short - set a timer for 5 minutes or less and take frequent breaks.
* Tired puppies are more cooperative. Before grooming go for a walk or have a training session at home before you start.
* Be patient. Standing still for grooming is work that they can learn but don't automatically know is a job they need to do.
* Make sure you are using a table or other raised surface. On the floor or in your lap will encourage him to try to change the subject.
