    The Fiat 131 was everywhere in the early 1980s. Taxi drivers especially loved them. A few short year laters they had all disappeared - rusted away to nothing.

    1984. I had just arrived at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk. I walked to the local garage in Barton Mills and rented their green-gold Viva until I bought a new car. Great time.

    Imagine a country where body filler is advertised on television and it's assumed people will repair their own cars. Now look at this country..

      It's funny; the further you go back, the more mechanical the adverts are. Old 50's mags would advertise pistons and grinding paste. Nowadays, its probably all about air freshners and phone holders!

    Blimey. I loved the Lancia advert. I had the HPE (the first one you see in the ad in silver; mine was red). I got 120mph out of it. Lovely to see the advert. Thanks

      Nice car. That kind of performance back then must have been pretty mind-blowing.

      I had 3 over a period. Black, Metallic Blue and the last one a red Volumex. Loved them. What fantastic cars.

    I very nearly, once, actually purchased a second-hand 1975 Lancia Beta (1400) back in November 1979.
    I was very glad that I did not, for these Italian vehicles were actually manufactured from vastly inferior Soviet steel that was incredibly prone to quickly rusting.

    Absolutely loved Unipart. Good quality parts at good prices. I went into one for points , condenser , dizzy cap and leads . All were GENUINE Lucas parts in Unipart boxes, same parts in Lucas boxes were more than double the price . Trusted their parts 100% as you knew you were buying quality , unlike the cheapo foreign shit we get today.

    5:20 I started driving in 1978 and I don't remember antifreeze ever being sold in metal cans here in the USA. Did they switch to plastic later in the UK?

    • @mikemartin2957
      @mikemartin2957 Před rokem

      Probably in the 90s most brands of antifreeze in the 1 gallon (5 liters size) went over to plastic containers. Bulk buys , over 5 gallons were in steel drums. Bluecol & Castrol were the two popular brands , but Unipart ( backed by BL ) Ford, Mopar( Chrysler UK) & AC Delco ( Vauxhall) , Esso & Shell could all be sold in pint, quart & gallon tins well into the 1980s
