Kawhi Leonard's franchise-altering shot deserves a deep rewind | 2019 Raptors vs. 76ers Game 7

  • For a dude who seemingly has the emotional range of a robot, Kawhi Leonard exploded with feelings of joy after draining a Game Seven buzzer-beater shot against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2019 Eastern Conference SemiFinals. That’s just how big this moment was. But to fully appreciate Kawhi malfunctioning, you have to understand everything that led up to the final bounces of that shot.
How the Raptors fell short year after year to LeBron and the Cavs, forcing them to make a drastic trade to reach this point. You need to understand that the 76ers are only here in this position to stop the Raptors now because they were purposely awful for numerous years. Yes, the Raptors have one of the most loyal fan bases in the NBA, but they had to go through years of losing and misery to get there. And while Kawhi is the star of this Raptors team, getting him to suit for Toronto didn’t come easy. So to really understand this moment, we gotta rewind.

as a diehard Raptors fan, I remember hearing about the trade and being devestated. I thought it was so cold the Masai traded away DeRozan, who pretty much was one of the first starrs the team had who actually WANTED to be a longtime Raptor... it was a heartbreaker. And then you hear about Kawhi and the drama in San Antonio and you really don't know what you're gonna get.
But MAN he was an ice cold killer all season... and he was the X-factor in the playoffs we needed to get over the hump. Did he leave after one seaosn? Yup he sure did, but he played his ass off for the year we had him here, and he will always be remembered as a huge piece of the team that brought an NBA championship north of the border.

I think people don’t understand how huge this moment was:
The last Canadian team to win a Stanley Cup was Montreal in ‘93.
The last Canadian team to win a title in any Major sports league was the Blue Jays in ‘93.
The last time a Canadian team appeared in the Stanley Cup final was the Canucks in 2011.
So when the Raptors won the title in 2019, it was seriously a long time coming.

As for this year, a lot of Raptors fans can say we are happy that the Raptors are not making the playoffs due to the circumstances. Not playing at home and playing in a city where the home fans boo the Raptors and cheer for the visitors. It would have been much worse if we made the playoffs. At least this way we have a chance to come back to Toronto next season, and that too with a potentially top 10 draft pick. Seems like a win to us.

Yeah it’s hard to deny how iconic this shot is, man. Just the perfect storm - Game 7, last seconds, Kawhi crouching in the corner before the arena erupts. Kevin Harlan nailed the call too. I have this, Dame’s ridiculous 3 to beat OKC, and Suggs’ Final Four shot as my top three basketball moments in recent memory. I hate that it happened to my Sixers but you gotta recognize history when you see it and try to appreciate it for what it is

I was 6 years old when the Raptors were founded, and their mascot was a dinosaur... New favorite team determined. I remembered crying after this moment, when they won the conference finals, and of course, when they won the title. It finished off a decade where my favorite team in 3 of the 4 major sports won a championship. My LA Kings won two Stanley Cups. My Lovable Losing Cubs didn't lose in 2016, and then the Raptors in 2019. Now if only my blasted Vikings could find a Super Bowl win to get me the clean sweep
