Great points you covered in this video as well as the weight explanations! I tow a 24ft, 5200 lb trailer with a 23' Canyon At4 and it seems to do great - and that's also a fully loaded bed and cab, Can you feel the trailer behind you? absolutely, but for individuals like myself that only tow a trailer locally (for the most part) and maybe only 2-3k miles annually, the mid-size truck aspects outweigh the towing shortcomings. I went from a Super Duty to a midsize for that reason exactly.
Single axle trailer like that is going to sway more than a double axle and not feel as planted. A weight distribution hitch would also go along way with that setup to take some of the tongue weight off and put it on the front axle. Lastly make sure those tires are pumped up to stiffen them up. Overall its fine for that trailer size and I believe the nissan is heavier than many other midsized trucks due to its boxed frame (same frame as their full size truck) so that also is to its advantage.
great video. My opinion on feeling that camper while towing is due to its shape. If you had one of the fiberglass trailers like Casita or Escape or Airstream you would forget its there from time to time. My son has a Taco 2019 and tows a 23' Airstream and we forget its back there. only upgrade he did was to add Timbren front and back
some things I agree with him on and some I don't. Im pulling with a 2019 Nissan front 2.5 King cab RV trailer about the same size as the one he has but it's vintage. I don't have any of those issues you need to get you a weight distribution hitch in anti-sway kit man I do have Firestone Air lift in the back that help as well. I have no issues at all. I also have the tow mirrors but I don't know if they make them in the newer generation midsize version. Also you need to get that tongue weight level as well
Nice truck. Good advice on towing with it as well.💪🇺🇸
Thanks bro!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Depending on trailer, our camper is a hybrid. 3200 pounds 19 foot long with beds out 29 foot long and 1000 pounds of supplies, 4200 pounds is all I need and I don't go over 63mph, my ford f150 crew cab 4x4 will tow 11,000 pounds
While my 2014 Frontier did not come with trailer brakes, it has a connection for them right under the driver side dash. Even my old Suburban that had a tow package and could tow 10,000 pounds did not come with brakes but had the connector right under the dash and the connector in the glove box.
Excellent breakdown and explanation!
Thanks Craig!
Campers may not be the best to tow with mid sizers but Frontiers are excellent tow rigs within their limits. I had a 2012 2nd Gen with the 4.0 and Manual 6 speed. My dad has a 2015 with the 5 speed auto. Both have plenty of power I’ve towed 4,000 lbs with complete ease multiple times.
I have a 13 Titan now. The Frontiers shares a narrower shorter versions of the Titan platform. It’s stout.
Thanks for sharing, if I used a WDH I think I would have had a better experience but seems like a waste for 3500#'s 👍🏾
I had a 2021 Frontier SV 4 door crew cab and it towed under 5k just fine.
Mine had 1400lbs of payload
I can see in the video that the tongue of the trailer looks low.
Perhaps a higher hitch would shift some weight off of the tongue and back onto the trailer axle and get rid of some of the sway?
I've found over the years that weight distribution is critical, especially with a single axle trailer.
Timely FB search today connected me to your video. Outstanding presentation and excellent factual information that few people consider when buying a compact truck. I generally tow a single axle open utility trailer for basic yard work around home. However, I also make several annual hunting trips out of state for antelope, deer, elk and hogs. For those trips we use an enclosed single axle 5x8 trailer. Weight isn’t and issue going. However, it is significantly overloaded coming home when we harvest several elk packed in coolers. Towed by a 2017 4x4 Tacoma isn’t a safe idea. Looking to move up to a used full-size half ton pickup. Thank you for the information!
Payload relates to the allowable tongue weight your stock suspension can carry. This has nothing to do with towing capacity from the manufacture. I have a 2019 PRO4X King Cab that I use to tow a 2,200lb off road tear drop. The tongue weight of my trailer is 289lbs (a simple scale can confirm yours) , so I placed 550lb springs in back lifting my truck 2-3/4" when unloaded or 1-3/4" when towing. The front was lifted 1-3/4" so it sets level when towing. Unloaded, the additional inch of lift helps compensate for the truck's poor departure angle on the trail. The Frontier is a GREAT truck and you would have to adjust any mid-size truck to set level when towing
I remember being white knuckled to death in my Ram 1500 driving on I-40 with a 22' NoBoundaries bunkhouse. Completely different animal towing with a HD truck. Pulling my Momentum over Salina pass at 80 mph like nothing. I wouldn't tow much with half tons or especially mid-size trucks.
For me I tow my 20' with HD's so I never notice it back there but going from that to this, I was nervous which you will see in the tow video lol!
You made some great points. A beautiful truck as a daily driver. However, it certainly wouldn't be my first choice as a tow machine.
Thanks!
I tow 4200+lbs Bass boats on a monthly basis. My 2022 Frontier King Cab 4x4 does great!
@@nachogtz3512Would you feel comfortable doing it weekly?
@@bassaddict_85 , yes!! I actually do! I’m not kidding. If you’re familiar with Big Mouth Bass fishing, I fish the record holding BassMaster lake, Falcon. That’s why I go at least once a week, sometimes more.
@@nachogtz3512yes of course! I also bass fish weekly in the spring, summer and fall and will be towing my bass boat as well. I’m usually towing about 1 hours 30 mins one way and I currently have a 1500 GMC Sierra. I get that it’s not going to tow the same way as a full size truck but I also don’t want to feel like the power and torque isn’t there for weekly fishing trips. How far are you towing usually?
I saw in a past video that you used to have a 01 Pathfinder. I’d like to see you do a video briefly talking about every car you’ve had. I used to be a Nissan Fan boy and still have a Titan and Hardbody. Also have a Vette and Mustang.
I can put something together 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork I know about your Ram, Pathfinder, Hellcat, and R8. Of course your current trucks. I’m sure there are many others!
Where is your equalizer hitch and sway bar? My dad sold Trailers and always told people to have those two items which have a huge impact of control of the trailer.
The car is wired for break box under the left side under the dash tape to the harnes
It appeared you had no equalizer, sway bars. That would make towing tricky for sure.
Get a weight distribution hitch with sway bars, and you’ll be MUCH happier.
The Kurt echo about to burn my truck up🔥
Would help if trailer tongue is level
I remember the 80s nissan hardbody truck, tough
Yes they were, family members ha Datsun and ran them hard!
I just had one of these as a rental car! It drove great for a 1/4 ton I guess it would be classified as. I wouldn’t try towing with it though 😅 they claim it can tow 6500 but I wouldn’t recommend it.
lol
Question what’s the best truck to drive as a daily but that you can use to tow like a bunch of wood and smaller equipment?
You buy whatever truck is rated to tow whatever your “ smaller equipment “ weighs
Should of got a Chevy Colorado which has tow brake controller.
If you are pulling anything bigger than a 6x8 utility trailer get at least a half ton.
I agree, when that wind picks up any trailer over 20ft becomes a sail for these smaller trucks!
I towed my 6×12 in a 40mph cross wind (sometimes a head wind)
It did great.
Wrong
You got me on the tires, this is coming from the guy who put 37's on his dually with 10 inches of sidewall! With an EQ hitch you could've shifted some the weight off the rear axle to the front axle and trailer even considering the added weight of the EQ hitch. No wonder it drove like crap with the front end unweighted.
You can get a " plug in " after market brake controller, I put 1 in my 2016 Silverado z71 off road.
But those tires have a 3900# capacity??? those 37's were also e rated like the ones that came on the truck so not sure what you're trying to say?
Not everyone tows with a truck so to keep costs down they put a towing package which includes a hitch reciver and trailer brakes as an option for those that want to tow. The same reason not all trucks come in 4x4 because not all trucks go off road. I have owned 4 trucks in my life and none of them were 4x4. So to keep prices down they put 4x4 as an option. The new Colorado/Canyon has a tow rating of up to 7,7000 so yeah those midsized trucks are intended to tow up to 6,000ibs with no problem. And if you don't think 6,000ibs is much for towing, I will get a 3,500ibs dry/5,500 ibs loaded 8x16 toy hauler with my 730ibs motorcycle, food, and gear and the 23' Colorado or Canyon can tow it off road with ease.
Just check the tow rating
What toy hauler did you find at 3500 lbs dry weight? InTech? NoBo?

Interesting, the Nissan has a 6000# tow rating but I think I would max out around 3500#'s personally...
They ain’t really for towing, tacomas are just a “I got a Toyota cuz they are …..” they’re tiny, uncomfortable and pretty useless if u wanna do anything serious. Not bashing, just facts.
Great beginner off road trucks!
So that truck comes with a factory trailer brake as an add on all I noticed that you didn’t have a sway bar system on it either. So why did you not do the research others item other than flipping the owner manual open. Parts like that are most of the time found at the dealer shop at the parts department so they can make more money. Please do some research and redo this video. By the way I personally would definitely would never tow with a CVT.
For 50k buy a real truck
