Dear GCN: Please keep making fun videos like this! I'm greatly enjoying Alex's creativity and ingenuity, but the best thing is seeing these awesome used parts being recycled into a fun new project! Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks - and noted!! 😄
The reason the seat debonded in the first place was the two mating surfaces weren't properly prepared. Shiny surface means the JB Weld will debond again because there's no mechanical interaction. (The "metal-filled" thing is just marketing crap - won't make any structural difference). What you need to do is heavily scour both surfaces - a bit of 32 grit sandpaper, or a small dremel bit in there to rough it all up on both parts. Then your standard 5min araldite, which is a standard epoxy resin similar to what the seat is made with, will fix it up properly.
"Justin" the metal particles do have a purpose. Evidently you do not have any actual mechanical engineering experience.
@@stephencurry8552 He's not wrong about everything else.
@@stephencurry8552 Yes, I'm not a mechanical engineer, but I am certified to repair composite fibre aircraft structures. There's no structural strength in that as the particles are too small to create a proper matrix in the resin to distribute the load throughout the bond. If they were large enough, then it becomes too large to get the two surfaces to mate together and you end up with a big blob of weak material sitting between the rail and the seat top. That will fail again rapidly in such a high stress location. Might be OK if you want something for space filling like a slightly stronger car bog which is where we use something similar - resin with glass flock in it
@@justincouch6964 Sure you are sport.
I suggest that Alex add some layer of carbon roving / band impreged with epoxy on top of rail/seat junction too ...
Seriously loving this series, and looking forwards to part 3.
112 grams saved in sanding the frame. Always interested in bike build projects like this.
I've had those RISK skewers on 2 of my bikes for years, they are fine.
Great video. Really enjoy Alex’s sense of humor and his knowledge about bikes. Keep it up!
Thanks Alberto!
Yeah, love it Alex
Started my last build with a £39 Dolan frame and carbon forks, many used parts later with help from Julian house, finished runs tiagra 4700 total cost around £400, ride it loads and love it ; )
Awesome. Submit it into the Bike Vault on the GCN app if you haven't already - we'd love to see it!
__ bike on a budget should be a series! I'd love to see more kinds of this - aero on a budget, gravel on a budget, etc etc
My guess for bike paint weight is 121g
Agreed.
With the budgets GCN has the sollution is just to go out and buy second hand whatever you were going to build. But true, there is a lot of entertainment in the process. And some compatibility warnings (but not much tricks to overcome those)
We'd certainly love to do more of these!
Alex, your advise on how to conduct an eBay transaction was spot on. Here in the US, many police stations advertise themselves as places to conduct sales transactions.
In the U.S. the racist police are the criminals. Terrible advice, especially if the person is a minority , you're going to send them to the fascist pigs?...lol
DON'T GO TO THE CRIMINAL POLICE ....LMFAO! OK BOOMER!
I like the more dramatic lighting for the GCN Tech desk
Love the series! My guess is 81 Gramms! I once sanded down an aluminium frame and polished it up to mirror finish. It had a shoddy paint job on it before, but that still only saved 125 Gramms!
My 1980 Panasonic Touring bike, will never be super light, but will be a badass gravel beast, when I’m done with it. I am sticking with fairly budget minded, or used or NOS components.
Awesome Benjamin - stick it in the Bike Vault for us when you're done!!
@@gcntech Bike Vault?
Part of me would love to build up a 70s frame into a retro styled drillium climber
Nice one Oli! 76 grams saved by sanding the paint. Can't wait for pt 3!
Great vid, would love to see more of these in the future.
By the way…. For those who don’t know what’s hill climbing you should check a video Ollie presented a few years ago for Cycling weekly channel.
I know GCN doesn’t bring it up because of obvious reasons (I hope they don’t get bothered if I do)
Anyway, Ollie did such a inspirational masterpiece with that video and it was simply amazing. It’s impossible not being an Ollie fan after watching that.
It was very good.
Can't wait to see that saddle debond again😈
Oh, and my suggestion to the weight saving predition: offer the winner get their frameset repainted
why would you look forward to something to break- most likly whist someones on it...?
@@markbailey2130 that's called Schadenfreude. Also that would teach people not to bodge critical safety elements
Cant wait to see the finished bike! 👌👌👌👌
Not sure who is producing these series with you Alex but I'm loving it. The lighting is amazing, the grafx are awesome and you're doing a stellar job!! Shame you for taking off the paint
Hey alex! You could sell the old parts to increase your budget! Make it super duper light!!
Clever thinking!
274 grams
Edit: It's the most Ollie thing Ollie has done!
Weird, weird, weird! I serviced my Tune hubs this afternoon! Love those things. Great video. Looking forward to part three.
Awesome video,I really love these themed videos like Ollies one to.The frame and fork look really nice bare.Rivets would help a lot on the saddle it would as they would help the bond with stresses.Safe riding.💯👌🏻✌🏻
Nothing like removing one of the most iconic paint jobs from one of the most iconic bikes of all time.
Aah the good old days 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah with only thousands mass produced, might never find another
@@christopherkemp338 like mazda miatas. They made a boat load. Yet...now people are paying out the nose for them.
I think you miscalculated - you bought the wheels for 300 GBP, not 325 as you counted in the final calculation. That means you have 30 GBP left and not just 5. So… what about some lightweight outer cables?
Shipping...
He did say he'd splurge on delivery though... whether that's worth 25 Pou-Eur-llars, me knows not.
@Two-eyed Roy Okay, seems I've missed that. Thanks.
At min 6;22 you can see 2nd class (which is typically 3 days) is included in the price, plus his email confirms total at £300. I.e. no extra postage cost.
This means Alex did not pay extra for quicker postage. The item also took 3 days too.
Also quicker postage wouldn't cost a £25 premium over 2 class.
Correction:
Look up completed listings 'Tune Mig Mag X Zipp 303 Tubular Carbon Wheelset 10 Speed'
Only one item appears, which are these wheels.
You can see he paid £16 for first class delivery.
I am looking forward to the completed build be interesting to see a previous generation bike how much lighter it will be than a new generation
107g saved, loving this video series Alex!
I'm glad you sanded it. I support removing any and all reminders of the Discovery Liestrong era. Bare carbon looks better than any paintjob that trek has ever done.
127g saved at the cost of a classic paint job 👎🏼
That bike was butt ugly
97 grams saved by removing all the paint, I guess.
Really really love this series, and can't wait for the part 3.
Love this series. Can't wait for the next episode.
My guess for the weight savings on the frame would be 113g.
I'm going to guess you saved 212 grams, love the series, looking forward to part 3!
Great series, really fun to watch!
My guess for weight saved by removing the paint: 43g
Really enjoying this series. With Ollie, you can take the man out of Yorkshire but not the Yorkshire out of the man.
GUY BRIDGEWOOD! Nice to see him back on CZcams!
😉
I have the same RISK skewers - they don't have little conical springs, but that doesn't seem to matter, they work just fine, and are very light.
Those wheels are pretty slick honestly. Tune hubs are bling
Great job Ollie with the stunt double.
I love these types of projects. I also love bling top of the range content but, every once in a while, it's nice to be remembered that you don't need to sell a kidney in order to improve your bike.
I think you saved 108g after sanding 😊 great video series! Really liking it
Cleaning the two surfaces seems like a good place for q-tips!!
using the same Risk titanium skewers on my caad12. great skewers, they develop a creak after some time, so what I did was put some grease on the pivot/ball joint, for the lack of the proper term for it.
This bike rebuild transcended into the Quentin Tarantino universe of cinematography with the number of "naked feet shots" we all got to see! On the other hand, it has that solo CZcamsr vibe going on, well-done GCN editing crew 👏
There's something for everyone in this episode! 👀😅
Thank you for sanding it. My guess 126 grams. I subscribed finally after watching yout show for years and even having gcn+ but never subscribed this channel. Now I did so don't feel too bad about the sanding. Also I am bike painter so if you ever need new paint on it... 😁
Great project Alex. I’m going for 126g saved by sanding.
Really good introduction to Ebay purchasing.
the sanded frame looks sick man!
fun series... can't wait for part 3!
my guess is 130 grams saved
You saved a whopping 3.6 grams with paint removal.
I got a mixed wheelset on my bike, my rear wheel, HED, off of Craigslist and the front wheel, Bontrager, from Proscloset for just under $400 usd combined. Good luck with the build and the hill climb.
In my youth I started out with 105, then 600, then Dura Ace. I also have a newer bike with Tiagra and haven't got any complaint about Tiagra.
As a schoolboy I always aspired to Campagnolo group set. Planning and hoping to treat myself (finally!) to a Campagnolo after all, all these years later.
Ollie's laughter was contagious 🤣. Bet you saved 34g
30 grams my guess.
28 grams saved, looking forward to seeing this project cmpleted!
I've sanded some of my skipoles before to mae them lighter. I probably imagine the upgrade to better than it actually is. I'm still confident that one pole with colour weighing 70 grams, one without the paint fall on maybe 65 grams. I think he gains 66 grams by removing all the paint.
great video as always, i recon 82 g, saved by removing the paint
90 grams. Enjoying the series. 🤘🏼👍🏼
Another great eBay tip is to heart/ like the item you want to buy. If you can wait, usually within 24-48 hours if the item isn’t sold the seller will drop message you with an offer that’s usually around 20% off. You can then counter with the nearest round number below their offer and they typically accept. Great of you’re not in a rush to get the item you want
Great job im currently building my mtb.
I've got some Risk pedal extenders. Great brand name! So far, the risk has paid off.
FWIW, that JB Weld is great stuff.
Awesome series!
Thanks Jared!
I used the Risk Qreleases and they are pretty good, but do check your back wheel one since it came loose for me a couple times
Great video! 😂 87g saved in paint
Such bad acting!! Love it!! 🤣🤣🤣
You saved 174g!
Good luck with the climb!
My guess is 145grams.
love the vid too. very interesting and fun to watch:)
Nice work! 121 grams saved on the frame.
Hi Alex - my guess for the weight saving - 124 grams - great video and I agree re with others seeing recycled parts being used in the videos
Love it so much!
34 grams by removing the paint.
Great vid, weight saving for paint removal 85 grams
Well, I guess you saved 148 grams on the frame. Great video idea, I like that you capped the budget at 1000€! 👍
Hey GCN, just a quick note that you messed up on the total amount spent since you got the wheels for 300, not 325! Loving these relatable and fun budget bike episodes, can’t wait for the next one!
87g. Great series!
I would have to guess you saved 148 grams! Love this series! Keep it up :)
At least you apologized, give you props for that👍
I bought titanium bolts for my bike from Risk. I don't know very much about the brand, but the bolts are legit.
If I were building a uberlight bike on a budget, my pick would've been a 2002-2003 Fuji Team Super Lite/ SL. Those were aluminum race bikes, that weighed 7 kg out of the box with Ultegra. I'm pretty sure they can be had for under or around 500 nowadays
THAT should be a separate video: fixing a broken seat!
Loving the project…but the paintwork!!!!!!!!!!!!
Combined weight reduction seems to be around 217 grams and now it depends on how deep did u scrape into the paint and amount of leftover if any
RISK is actually a big brand in asia, I use them on Racing and riding XC on my XC HT bike!
And tun-nadh!! you saved absolutely no weight after that attempt to sand that carbon frame ( the carbon dust)😊
using the exact same risk quick release, no issues after thousands of km
what tool was used to remove the bike paint? It seems easy to use.
57g for the sanding?
great vid! though I must admit i found it a shame sanding dow the frame. My gues for weight saved is 181g!
Sorry Natan!!
alex and the art of acting! 😁
I'm guessing you saved 92 grams! Excited to see the end weight of the whole build
Not only did you keep your budget, but you made money doing it, it’s your job !!
Great Video, very Interesting. I think it save 36g
Very cool series, really inspires me to looks for upgrades for my bike..
147 grams is my guess.
Great episode. My guess is 125g. If it wasn't for your reaction I would've guessed twice that.
Great build! Guessing 91 grams saved by sanding the paint.
I guess that the frame and fork are 118grams lighter without paint! But keep making these vids, I enjoy riding my bike much more after looking to this!! Greetings from Belgium!!!
Well it‘s an awdome series loved the tt bike love the superlight bike. My guess is 178g
181 grams saved on the frame with no paint!
How much are the wheels 300 or 325
Great video Alex, I thought you only paid £300 for the wheels! That leaves £30 in the budget for a proper saddle 😅
98 gram saving on the paint
I imagine it's the "I'm going to pay extra for fast shipping"
Really enjoyed this... apart from the acting - which was fairly ropey XD
78g saved from sanding the frame?
