MiniNova - Front Panel Editing

  • Here I demonstrate how you can make patches on the MiniNova using only the front panel. I tend to get lost in my own world when I'm editing patches so it will be a good idea to watch what I'm doing more then just listening. I apologies also for the audio sync issues at the end. I don't know why but I just could not get them to sync.

    From Wikipedia:
    A synthesizer (often abbreviated as synth, also spelled synthesiser) is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through instrument amplifiers and loudspeakers or headphones. Synthesizers may either imitate instruments like piano, Hammond organ, flute, vocals; natural sounds like ocean waves, etc.; or generate new electronic timbres. They are often played with a musical keyboard, but they can be controlled via a variety of other input devices, including music sequencers, instrument controllers, fingerboards, guitar synthesizers, wind controllers, and electronic drums. Synthesizers without built-in controllers are often called sound modules, and are controlled via USB, MIDI or CV/gate using a controller device, often a MIDI keyboard or other controller.
    Synthesizers use various methods to generate electronic signals (sounds). Among the most popular waveform synthesis techniques are subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, phase distortion synthesis, physical modeling synthesis and sample-based synthesis. Other less common synthesis types (see #Sound synthesis) include subharmonic synthesis, a form of additive synthesis via subharmonics (used by mixture trautonium), and granular synthesis, sample-based synthesis based on grains of sound, generally resulting in soundscapes or clouds.
    Synthesizers were first used in pop music in the 1960s. In the 1970s, synths were used in disco, especially in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, the invention of the relatively inexpensive, mass market Yamaha DX7 synth made synthesizers widely available. 1980s pop and dance music often made heavy use of synthesizers. In the 2010s, synthesizers are used in many genres of pop, rock and dance music. Contemporary classical music composers from the 20th and 21st century write compositions for synthesizer.

    Awesome video tutorial ! Excellent ! Thanks for sharing this with everybody else. There are not that many video tutorials about MiniNova on CZcams. Mostly reviews of the gear. But you made a one step further, and that is so cool ! Thanks !

      XtraLite Absolutely. That is if you have time to do it. I’m sure a lot of “new owners” of MiniNova ( including me) will appreciate that kind of “hands on” experience.

    Some template Init patches would have been nice. Or maybe if more than one of the Tweak controls were pre-assigned. The animate pads too. It's great that they can be customized, but it seems like some parameters could have been there by default. That's 15 controls on the front panel that just aren't assigned to anything. Could pull a lot of stuff out of the menu that way.

    Nice, I'll copy this idea.

    Thank you for this video. I am not clear on the other oscillators, after programming the first oscillator, can I go to the menu and send a second oscillator to the control matrix for editing the sound via the front panel. OR, do I have to use the menu for all remaining programming after the first oscillator edit???? I have been wishing to purchase this synth, but not if I have to menu dive for basic programming. Also since their is no panning of oscillators I would like to have two of them and pan each in the mix.

    • @System-1541
      @System-1541  Před 6 lety +1

      You have to go into the menu to turn the volume levels up of the other two oscillators and change their other settings but the amp and filter envelops and filter affect all oscillators so you don't have to program what I show in the video to each individual oscillator. I've never heard of a synth that has pan settings for each oscillator but that would be really awesome! If you want more in-depth control from the front panel I would suggest the Ultranova. Although the editing from the mininova is not bad once you get used to it, and the experience is much better than a lot of other synths this size.

      Thank you so much for your reply. The Roland Gaia SH-01 allows panning positions for any of the 3 oscillators. Yes, I am going to wait and save for the ULtra-Nova instead. I have menu dived for over 25 years, but no more. I have wasted too much time sound designing with menus.

    I don't understand why my knobs ale changing all parameters in column instead only this, wchich is chosen. For example I'm changing filter attack and then also resonance, amp attack and osc sync is changing to the same parameters. Did I change some sattings?

    Do you (or anyone else here) know how to get past the "Unsaved LosChng?" message? I tried hitting all the buttons but nothing lets me change the patch after I edited something in the menu. Help please, I've looked all over the internet but noone seems to have that issue. Can't get my head around it, still kinda hoping it's a bug or something. Thanks y'all

      René Salim If you don't want to save the changes you made on the patch press 'OK'.

      thanks. i had in fact tried that several times, turned out my ok button needed harder pressing than the other buttons to get the contact working. rookie mistake, thank you though for your answer!

    What is the best way to setup a basic lfo I can’t find it anywhere ?

    • @System-1541
      @System-1541  Před 2 lety +1

      The LFO settings are in LFO section of the edit menu. You have to go to the matrix section and select the LFO as a source to use it.

      How do you mean? The 4 knobs I use in the video are quite visible on the right side of the screen.
