  • 5/12/2024 Wood and concrete block raised garden bed
I’ve been waiting a couple years to build this bed. I went to Lowe’s and bought the concrete corner blocks for 2 for $5, the pine 2x6x8 for $5.88, and pressure treated for the ground 2x6x8 for $7.88. The total cost was $61.28 and to fill it was all materials I had on hand. I put cardboard at the bottom, covered it with leaves an added some dirt that I dug out of the yard. I put a bunch of drink and egg containers next to help retain some moisture plus the worms really like them. Then I sifted compost and the large pieces I added to the bed first and mixed some rice hulls into the compost. I purchased the rice hulls a few years ago when I couldn’t buy perlite or vermiculite. The rice hulls do a similar job helping to create some aeration and it a natural, breakdown in around 5 years. It took around 16 wheelbarrow to fill the bed, I know the bed will settle and as the leaves breakdown I will need to add more compost to top off the bed.

Great project. The blocks can be secured with rebar and the wood is easily replaced as it rots. I like this.

Excellent demo of your simple to make raised bed Rick!! I like the idea of using all those egg cartons and drink holders under the soil. I need more space to give this a try!!🪱🪱🪱

Thanks Patrick, I was collecting from work for a bit and had a ton of them. Figured it would be good for the worms plus hold some moisture for the plants.

Looks like you still have a good stockpile of leaves, etc. to get that bed off to a good start, Rick.

Yup still have 8 bags of leaves 😂
Thanks Sandra. Just planted some butternut squash seeds at the ends of the bed. We shall see how it goes.

Those blocks look real handy, fortunately, I have no more room for raised beds, lol.
What you could have done is dug out some native dirt below the bed and filled the bottom with wood chips, logs, branches a pseudo hügelkultur bed. Then you could have used the soil inside the bed.
The small raised beds I made for my front arched trellis last spring settled a full 8" by fall. I amended it with more soil, compost and leaf mold before winter and went down another couple inches by spring. This is all good, shows there is a ton of biology going on.
What do you have planned to go in that bed?
I get a kick at looking at the background in videos, you have as much crap laying around as I do, the sure sign of a good gardener.
Have a great week Rick! Stay Well!!!

I planted some butternut squash seeds, probably some cherry tomatoes, oregano, basil and strawberries. I want it predominantly strawberries, where they are now gets blocked out by my other beds. I still need to get a cattle panel trellis then I should be good for garden stuff for a little while. 😁

@@GardeningwithBarchuckin That bed is going to settle like a son of a gun, If you plant strawberries you will have a hard time refilling the bed.
I would bet, that bed by fall will be down at least 1/2 way.
I just had to buy a yard of soil to amend my beds I put in 5 years ago, no soil. Everything did great for a few years, but without soil, the microbes have nothing to work with.
It is similar to potting mix, no soil, basically you are planting your plants into a bed of potting mix.
My opinion is that any new raised bed should be at least 2/3rds native soil. Amend away, but you have something for the microbes to work on.
Just me I guess. Stay Well!!!!

Great video and awesome looking raised bed. I have helped Ernie a bit in the garden this year but nothing near as industrious as your project. BTW, Ernie also says hello.

Thanks Ed! Tell Ernie I said hi too. Hope to get a chance to swing by work has been crazy busy. Had a guy retire in December and management said no new help for us. 🤦‍♂️

That’s a bargain at $10 plus wood, reclaimed if possible 😁

I had to jump on the 2 for $5 concrete corner blocks. I don’t have access to large pieces of reclaimed wood but tons of pallets

I'm thinking this would be a great option for a compost bay. I'm taking out my 15 year old pallet bays. What do you think?

    • @GardeningwithBarchuckin
      @GardeningwithBarchuckin  Před 10 dny

It could work, not sure the stability. You could help secure with rebar. I will be making more pallet compost bays (I get free ones from work).
