On a winding back road, nothing could get close, not even a Golf GTI. Normally aspirated engine, with a HUGE twin-choke Solex carburettor. The later GTI model had the same engine, but with fuel injection, and a slight increase in bhp. Knew a guy who turboed a diesel model. Same size block(1360ccs),and it pushed out around the same power as the GT,but he had problems keeping the engine cool enough in the long term,so I think he gave up on it,eventually.

It weighed around 650kg from memory but, it had very soft suspension as seen here. Great wee car for skidding about, we used to handbrake around the streets in the snow and the car parks. That’s how I learned to control oversteer, that experience saved me a few times too in the wet and snow over the years! As ridiculously simple and slow the AX is, there are some really brilliant engineering decisions which went in. Despite it being so old it is more aerodynamic than most modern hatchbacks, and it being only 700KGs definately helped. The rear axle is also able to turn to help with stability. You basically had 4 wheel steering when approaching the limit!

Amazing car! I had one and I miss it very much. I remember when I had it that I had to make every weekend a journey from Braga to Porto - about 50 Km ride - and, many times, I would leave Braga with the low fuel light on, that meant the car was already spending fuel from the reserve, and I would arrive at Porto with the light still on and still enough fuel to cross the city to where I lived. A very economic and reliable car. Miss you, AX!!

This was a "commerciale" ( no back seats ) so even lighter on the back than a normal one.
As a one time owner of an AX ( AX Spot, 956cm3 gasoline engine, seats of the sport/GTI variant though, 650Kg of fun ), and having driven it about 100K kms in France and UK ( yes... UK ) it was a really fun car to drive, as long as you didn't mind the back wandering a bit when things were slippery ( because all the weight was in the front. ).
Sadly it got wrecked in an accident long ago, I still miss it for the fun it provided. Also it can be seen as the 80s/90s version of the 2CV. ( though a lot less rustic )

He went to the dealer and placed his order, and found a buyer for his old Porsche. While waiting for the new one to be delivered, he bought a 'cheapo' interim car, the then new AlfaSud ti 1200.
