Very good. You could use baking paper (parchment?) Instead of paper and hand cream, the glue wont stick to it.
I was just about to mention that same thing because I've done that method before. Hot glue comes cleanly right off parchment paper, with a frosted look underneath the glue. To make both sides have the flat frosted look, there just needs to be a layer of parchment on top, with a piece of cardboard lightly pressed over it, then let it sit to cool down.

I would do a rectangle or square for the lamp and use thicker wooden dowels to give better strength and structure. How about you do a tile template which can be used to make pattern on the walls. Keep it simple with the shape but make the pattern nice, they can be used to in print a pattern on concrete or wall filler to give the impression of tiles.
