When I was in high school I really began to get into jazz. Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery, John Coltrane, were among my favorites. I quickly realized that I needed to be able to play over the very common ii-V-I progression if I was going to be able to keep up. The tips in this video were some of the ways I navigated this ubiquitous chord change.

Thank you Tom, great lesson. For those curious as to why the I chord is a major 7th, the quality of the diatonic chord progression when the 7th is added is as follows: IMaj7, ii7, iii7, IVMaj7, V7, vi7, vii7b5. Thus the root and four chords are Major 7ths. The two, third, sixth chords are minor 7ths. The five chord is a dominant 7th. And finally, the seventh chord in the progression is a minor 7th with a flat five.

Hum ... for me to excel as a jazz guitarist 😮 can you move mountains???
Apologies just have a snarky attitude because since 2016 been struggling trying to find my way back to being a value/productive human. Anyways, you made my day as today is day 1 of trying again. Enjoy your videos and feel you got that thing that has reached through (all the scar tissue and this video has hit home). Disclaimer, will have to watch this another 30 times (due to TBI). But this grabs me, hits me, and i can connect! Apologize but this, for me is a gold mine. A drunk driver nearly took my life and i am stoked right now as the fretboard is firing up stuffnin my mind and this is making SENSE!!!

🤔"What is Jazz?" I once inquired long ago. Then someone quoted Louis Armstrong. "If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know." 🙃

so to acquire vocabulary you just have to play the same progression over and over again?
