  • In this video I break down how I paint water. I use a photo I took of a sail boat in the water as a reference and walk you through my process step by step.

    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    The best teacher ever.
    I learned from him for few days more than I learned from others for years.
    Fundamentals and basics, very important.

    Love seeing how you go from very rough minimal thin paint sketch to nice finished painting. I am just now starting to understand how this works as I do my own painting. Another great vid.

      Correct me if I'm wrong but I use a lite wash. Kind of like simulating water over the base of reeds giving sight under and through swallow water.

    Graphite dissolve in the solvent I use and tint my wash, so yeah, avoid using graphite.

    composition, dark to light,thin to thick, covered by thin paint, squint, darkish green, boat blue, focal point, jumping around, dark with lighter tones, more paint, start with foliage lighter green add red to green=natural, yellow okra +blue. paint reflection in the water, horizon strokes, find the reflecting, just values look at color darker or lighter, work smaller shapes, step back see your painting fix it, keep doing until you satisfy,

    Hi coach, how do you varnish your paintings? What do you prefer to use? And how do you keep dust off the varnish? Thank you.

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach  Před 4 lety +1

      I do varnish my paintings. I use retouch varnish because I can use it once the painting is touch dry. If you use regular varnish before it's fully dry which takes 6-12 months you run the risk of cracking. The battle against dust is a hard one. I varnish outside because of the fumes and I try to find an open space where nothing will blow on the painting and get stuck in it.
