Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I like how he can actually teach me how to paint, beat me blue in an alleyway, and choke me in bed. Kidding aside, taught me so much how to layer paint on top of each other.
I like the ending ~ humor is always good for an ending!
I think you're spot on.
Personally, my goal is hyperrealism, so i have to keep going with the detail. But I love that you address that. Same process, one area at a time, patience, and save the darkest darks and brightest brights for last.
Good stuff Chris! 👍 🦸♂️
Making the details is so hard and frustrating and this tutorial is very helpful. Thank you sir
You're very welcome!
Dude this is the most useful video i have ever watched
And i am thankful for that
Coffe, and canvas, for this Oklahoma morning! Thank you for dissecting clearly.
Any time!
You’re really great, already know I’m going to get on your patreon and buy your classes soon; You’ve helped me so much! You’re a natural, intuitive teacher. Thank you 🥲
Thank you so much!!
As a beginner I find these breakdowns extremely helpful. Thank you for the effort you put in these!
This is sooo helpfull. Especially now that my painting classes have been canceled because of covid
Sorry to hear your classes were canceled
Thank you for the knowledge
All this oil painting talk is making we want to pull them out and play. Haven't painted with them in such a long time. Thanks for share. Thumbs up and shared! Love the background of where you paint. It looks like art itself!
Thanks!
Excellent video yet again Chris ! Take another medal out the bucket
I love that you start with saying what you're doing with the paint, and what brushes you're using - and that you repeat the importance of squinting in each video. Some top-notch pedagogy there
Omg I love you. You’re like my own son (well, my 5th 😀! But none of them paint…). I love your humor nvm the tremendous amount of info I’ve learned from you. I understand everything you say and you are just articulating and explaining what I’m trying to figure out as I self teach…thank you, you’re amazingly talented
This painting reminds me of the California Impressionist style. I have always liked that style and your explanation of perspective and value helps explain why they work so well.
Great tips! Thanks Chris!
Thanks for making this! It can be so intimidating to paint landscapes when there are so many details. Loving the hair!
Thanks and thanks!
Top man as always...
Good tips man. Your content is just getting better and better. Really helpfull stuff for us self taught painters out there
I appreciate that!
very good thank you
Love it, so much good advice, thank you! I was just preparing my canvas for my next painting which I'm thinking of a landscape, and what do I see on CZcams your video : so on point haha! Thank you again, it truely helps! 🙂
Awesome! Glad it was helpful
I don’t even paint with traditional oils but have started using them with CWM, however I still get so much useful info from your channel. Thx and keep up the great work! ✌️
Carol Lelivelt .... are you meaning Cobra water mixables? I’ve just got them yesterday and anxious to see if I like them.
Barbra Joan is that a thing? I was referring to Cold Wax Medium 😄. It’s often abbreviated that way or possibly OCW (oil with cold wax).
Happy to help!
I'll follow your way😍👏
Fantastic video....great explanation of the process, and atmospheric perspective. I have been working on not letting myself get caught up in the details to quickly ....the struggle is real ...lol
Thanks!
Any chance you could do a video on specific types of brushstrokes used for different things in a landscape? Edit: or series of videos
Fantastic! Could I replicate this in acrylics?
What linen panel do you use? Can you give me a link to where you purchase panels?
Could you do a video talking about simplifying . Why should somebody simplify what they see? I hear artists say that, but why?
I purchased your drawing and foundations courses. I finished the drawing course but have not started the foundations course. I noticed that the foundations course is available for only a year. Most courses are available forever once you buy them. I’ll run out of time to paint since I spent so much time drawing. Can the deadline be extended on the foundations course? I don’t want to rush through foundations. Also wondering if there are other paintings available for foundations as the paintings on foundations aren’t anything I would normally paint. I’d like to improve my painting of animals/pets, people, crowds, water and sky. Still life paintings?? Enough said :)
Do you really need photo shop to help with values and instead of squinting? Thank you! Great videos and materials suggestions.
There is no time limit on the courses
Why are you using student grade oil paint?
Bc more expensive paint isn’t worth the money to me right now
Paint Coach fair enough
I hate the "squit your eyes" tip. Whenever I squint everything gets darker and redder.
If you can learn to paint what you see when you squint it will change your life forever
@@paintcoach my squinting changes the value and hue. It's useless
I love your teaching but you talk to fast. Like a salesman.
