Scarlet Nexus Review - The Final Verdict

  • Scarlet Nexus lives and dies by its combat, which is a good thing, because the combat is great. It's fast, frantic, consistently enjoyable, grows progressively more complex, and feels surprisingly strategic on a very fundamental level. But in most other ways, the game fails to live up to its potential, most notably in how it fails to do justice to a good setting and solid world-building with uninteresting characters, a mindless narrative, and deeply flawed storytelling.
    If you're looking for engaging combat, I'll recommend Scarlet Nexus in a heartbeat- but be prepared to be lukewarm on nearly every other aspect of the game.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX Před 3 lety +2

      @@alexandergreene461 Honestly, I truly have to disagree it is 'all subjective' anyway. It mostly just isn't subjective at all. If a game doesn't control well, it will be something everyone objectively notices. And in this particular case, the reviewer in this case is just dead wrong. He probably just doesn't like JRPGs a lot and has zero experience with other JRPGs to compare with, because this truly is one of the better JRPGs out there. Literally objective fact. It's also an objective fact combat is actually very decent, if not outright great. It has refreshing new stuff, it uses quicktime events in a way that actually feels good and overall impact of everything is amazing. I never get how people can be completely hyped about something like Metal Gear Solid V (great game by the way, I still occasionally play just to kill some time) or something like Persona 5, but consider deeper combat in a game like Scarlet Nexus suddenly mediocre. Makes no sense to me. And compared to some of the dungeons you will find in lower budget JRPGs, this game has spectacular level design and world building. It rivals that of Final Fantasy, which again isn't hard to see an objective fact. No doubt this reviewer will hate on other upcoming games like Tales of Arise, which has a similar next level vibe to their world building. At least in terms of first impression, the game isn't out yet. Another objective fact is how most people are just terrible reviewers when it comes to the more objective stuff a game does right. These same idiots consider Cyberpunk 2077 a good game, somehow. When actually, it is straight up trash. Not very hard to see the countless of issues with that game. All objective stuff. Whether or not people are able to enjoy playing the game _despite_ all that has nothing to do with subjectiveness either. It's just their tolerance for crap games is (too) high. It means they will always be biased.

    The tone of this review is pretty conflicting to the score imo. You don't sound super enthusiastic about anything (understandable) but that kinda conflicts with a 7/10 score. It doesn't sound like the story could've been that bad and the level design that archaic if you give it a 7/10 unless the combat is just that good. But I've heard other reviews say the exact opposite and score it similarly.

    • @Egeslean
      @Egeslean Před 3 lety +3

      You just have to minus 5 points from it and imagine it's actually a 1-5 scoring system. These 'reviewers' almost never really rate things lower than a 5, even when they bash them to hell. He's basically saying it's a 2/5 game.

    • @ironmaidenmetalgod

      @Billus08 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ironmaidenmetalgod you missed the point of the argument. A 10/10 would still be a perfect score if you subtract 5 i.e. 5/5. The argument is that review scores barely hand out less than a 7. By subtracting 5 (thus eliminating the bias) you're left with a score that better reflects the true score. Thus a 7 equates to a subpar/just below average game. A game that receives a rare 5/10 would mean it's not worth playing if we use the subtract 5 formula.

    Saying "you dont understand the genre" or "10/10 cuz the combat is so good" does no justice for the review of the game as a whole. Clearly, their expectations are so low and so limited that a game clearly presenting flaws is perceoved as perfect or near perfect.

    This game looks really freaking cool, and the combat sounds extremely fun and engaging, but the outdated almost punishing linearity of the level design is such a turnoff. I don't need fully open world design, and games like Final Fantasy XV, Greedfall, or God of War hit a good middle ground between fully open world and fully linear worlds, so we all know it can be done perfectly well. They're linear but there's still exploration to be had, to scratch that innately human exploratory "curiosity itch."
    I don't know how honest this game is about its linearity either. What I mean by honest or dishonest linearity is this... Final Fantasy 7 Remake felt very *dishonest* in its linearity at times because of how it was so _very_ linear, and then at the same time the devs would continually tease us by throwing in all these little spots that were literally designed to look like explorable paths, but when you approach them you find out there's an invisible wall, or some tiny bits of debris on the ground magically preventing you from proceeding. There's a sense of being "teased" or lied to about the map that makes this kind of deceptive or "dishonest" linearity even more disappointing than a game like Persona 5 where you have literal streets or hallways and the linearity is just a fact of life.

    I think the story is good but it's ideal to obviously play both protagonists. I enjoyed the story, and for me, if I can remember the characters well and like them, I tend to see that as a win for characters in my book. And you'll have to like the characters because you'll be seeing and talking to them a LOT. So characters make or break a story even if the story is good. Heck, you get a lot of back story from them too if you do their bond episodes. I do admit though that world building did take a back seat some, but it's still cool though. You get enough of what you need to understand your objective in the story.

    Though I can't help but wish more games did a little more to live up to their potential. In terms of combat, I also wish more games took a quicker, action packed approach to combat. One review I just read said it was a bit boring and they expected DMC-like combat. Even if not DMC for Nexus something more like Ys which is an Action RPG and faster paced combat with tons of skills would likely be nice. But I'll find out tomorrow just how well or mediocre Scarlet Nexus is.
    side note: Jedi Fallen Order was one I recently I played that seemed to fall a bit short; imo. It was your stale, typical, snails pace combat; imo. Personally that game, for me, would've benefited greatly from a more action oriented combat system where you truly feel like a badass Jedi. Perhaps since Cal has been in hiding and not a Jedi Master will mean that if there a sequel they will attempt a more action oriented combat system; along with some form of fast travel. The level design, the tombs, everything about Jedi Order was really fun except for combat and frustrating due to lack of any fast travel on each planet....

But all these reviewers know these are their own opinions, as all reviews are people's opinion. But this and some others have been very declamatory about how others will feel about the game. They don't say things like, "I found the story lacking", they say "this was a poor story" and " be prepared to not like anything other than the combat". Some reviewers didn't like my favorite game of all time, and some reviewers also praised the story in this very game. To say "be prepared to not like it" is ridiculous. My problem is not that someone had a certain opinion, I just think they framed those opinions as a fact that will be true for everyone, which is clearly not true. And a review is OBVIOUSLY entirely an opinion, as you can tell, one person can give something a 10/10 and another can give it a 2/10. One can love the story, others can hate it, which is the case I'm talking about here with this very review. To think there's an "objectively good story that meets some criteria" is foolish nonsense. You think there's a checklist reviewers go by? A negative review can be helpful, if the content explained sounds like something you'd enjoy that the reviewer didn't, as was the case with my favorite game. So w that being said I believe the budget situation was no different here, but instead of using that budget for a cheesy fighting game, they made this a semi open world game and poured most of the budget into the combat leaving much to be desired in other departments such as side quests or stereotypical 1D characters

    This is such a complete and utter BS review though. It never under-delivers and the whole world building is extremely impressive and honestly quite unheard of in traditional jrpgs. Story telling rough and uneven? Hell no. One of the big selling points is the story and the whole setting. Animes usually don't care about plotholes and actually, this is a very decently put together story. It's actually a very good game storywise. And when was the last time a Metal Gear Solid story 'made any real sense'? You're being deliberately ignorant on how anime / jrpg style games handle stories, let alone how Japanese games in general are. Combat is actually pretty refreshing, even when a bit heavy on the quicktime events, but combined with context based combat is really a very strong point of this game. It feels very empowering. People are wrong calling this mediocre.

    I'm gonna sum up exactly how this review went in a nutshell aside from him only hitting well on the combat so that part was good info.....
    "It's not muh gritty and emotional western RPGs like Witcher and the Arkham series or even overused dull FPS games where ah can shoot people. It's not even muh favorite gorey Japanese games like Demon/Dark Souls and BlOoDbOuRnE! It's too 'an-ah-may' and CaRtOoNy fer me!"
    That about sums this "review" up. I laugh every time most western reviewer review Japanese anime games in this tone (or even when they're in a good mood) because I already know how it'll go. They need to be "DaRk, gRiTtY aNd EmOtIoNaL wItH aN iMpAcTfUl StOrY" to win them over.
    Forgot to add, some of the things you said were right...just some. The game doesn't look like it adds up to the hype the developers were making it out to be so I completely understand mixed opinions and standings from anyone. I may or may not get this, but the combat sells me on it sort of. However, when I come to look at or watch a review, I come to look at or watch a review. Not what the reviewer mostly thinks of it with little actual review points thrown in. "AnImE tRoPeS". How many times have I heard that line in an anime game review before from western reviewers who are ready to pick on the "cartoony" anime game? When you play an anime game expect the tropes obviously. When I play a psychological horror game I immediately come in expecting that, not pointing out the obvious to an audience already expecting the same.

    • @LeoBlood10
      @LeoBlood10 Před 3 lety +1

      It's almost like the world at large is tired of anime tropes because they're repetitive and dull, if games like Persona can do more with their characters while still using the anime art style I think other games and god forbid their WRITERS can push an envelope once in their lives.
      But there's a lot more to this review than you're letting on, complaints with the dull and unimportant side quests as well as beautiful but otherwise repetitive hallway dungeons, but sure, focus on the "mUh AnImE TrOpEs"

    • @darkraven5626
      @darkraven5626 Před 3 lety +1

      @@LeoBlood10 "It's almost like the world at large is tired of anime tropes because they're repetitive and dull." Oh please, spare me!
      Don't get me started on the typical and overused storylines of western games that feature post apocalyptic crap and having some emotional journey inside of some individual's head. So much of that boring stuff is getting old save for only a few good ones which is my opinion to make that clear. Am I making this up? Do you love playing the same repetitive and outdated point your gun at an enemy and press the shoot button from a first person perspective? Do you love using a constant dodge and roll stamina system where you look and wait too many times for an enemy opening for an attack? Who knows, it's all an opinion based on the players taste and Persona 5 and the Dark Souls games are incredibly popular titles.
      I guess you forgot that this is in the end still an anime game. Almost all of them will have the usual tropes. Persona 5 is no different, I don't care how well done or bad it's story was. Best advice, just don't play them if you're gonna come in not expecting the usual anime shenaningans. Sorry that the reviewer didn't see any emotionally gripping bits in this game and didn't have tearjerker or gritty moments you would see in for example the first The Last of Us game. When a reviewer starts talking about jrpgs, they need to give out the review instead of trying to speak for everyone through their opinions on the game. They're there to give the info to the audience, not tell them 80% of what they think about it unless they carefully mix it in without going too far and this isn't the only channel that does this. He hit the combat well I'll admit, but the whole review sounded like he wasn't interested in this at all. Read some of the other comments here and you'll see what I mean.
      To add, I'm not saying people should go out and play Asian games only or play western games only. Everyone plays whatever the heck they want. This long comment of mine was mainly hitting on some of the more western reviewers like Gaming Bolt looking at a jrpg title like this and only giving their thoughts on it instead of just reviewing it like a critic should WHILE adding a few of their personal thoughts on it which is completely fine. They cater to the aforementioned games I hit on earlier with actual reviews and will bodyslam games like this with mostly opinions.

  • @TheRandomYoYo
    @TheRandomYoYo Před 2 lety

    I think I have a solution to the story dilemma. It's good if you like generic shonen anime. You have powers, characters with unique traits, some plot twists and a very vague surface level mystery making it what feels like one of the best adaptations of a full damn anime as a game. Every beat of it feels like an anime, with filler episodes, that sometimes do character development, weird romance hints here and there, and some over the top scenario. The one thing missing is the characters telling the power combos they use outloud as you charge them up. It's bad if you look at it from a perspective of a cohesive crafter plotline, stuff happens seemingly out of nowhere with the only hints to it being the very specific pause in dialogue where one character goes "hmm.. " with a closeup on them for just a second, essentially telling you they will be part of the plot twist/intrigue. It's fairly obvious from the beginning who is likely to die and who is not as they all have unique powers among them, powers which are quite important in multiple bossfights. I am about 40% through the storyand have 100% certainty who might be in danger of dying of being decommissioned.
    One very important aspect to add is that the dialogue actually feels natural. You have some pieces here and there of very clear cut stereotypes, like the shy girl fumbling her words constantly, the tsundere being an ass, or the edgy hater hating in a not so edgy way, but the rest of the cast including the main characters actually have decent dialogue and more importantly normal responses, basically calling out bs and making fun of it. It feels self aware enough to mock it, while not being truly character breaking. I sat in shock as one of the characters asked if the main character "likes plants too". Phrased in that way. Not "oh do you enjoy gardening? / Have you considered taking care of plants yourself? / If you are curious about gardening I'd be happy to help".
    In short, one of the best anime adaptations, including the clever use of visual novel elements in line with manga, gameplay bloody rocks 90% of the time, especially with fun added comments during combat that shake things up and bring a feeling of "you actually have teammates". Plots weird and feels like there could be more done with the concept, but I guess they wanted to keep it far away from an Akame Ga Kill style anime (which I personally think would have been much more impactful). The few deaths that happen feel emotional enough although the pacing of the events is quite off especially when you do your first playthrough.

    What are you talking about? The combat is worse than any JRPG I've ever played. Even the SAO games outshine it. I'm not even through the tutorial and I'm returning it to Gamestop. I can't hit enemies with my sword for shit, I lock on to an enemy and end up turned around and just missing enemies completely. I could adapt to that but every time I swing my sword the framerate drops which complete counteracts the entire concept they were going for with the game and I just could not deal with it, it drove me insane. I also learned that there isn't any love interests and this game has the absolute perfect set up for it, that's really disappointing. Every movie you watch has a love interest but it's for some reason a taboo in video games. It doesn't have to be a dating sim, Tales of Arise did it perfectly showing it works. They got married in the end and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop even if there were a few cringe moments. It doesn't really look like any of the characters develop relationships with each other. I don't understand why everyone was telling me to get this game. There is absolutely nothing in this game that stands out. It looks like they went all out on the combat system hoping that would carry the game alone, but they didn't ask the questions of "Is this too much? Will our game even work properly if we go this far?"

      This is why I'm planning on picking Kasane, as the MC. Her design is sooooooo much better than the male MC.
      As an anime fan of 6 years, these male MCs all look the same to me now and it's ridiculous how most anime creators don't even bother changing up their character design. They always have long-black hair and their designs are always bland af. Whereas, the female MCs usually have the best, somewhat-unique, looking design.

    I was interested in Code Vein because it looked like God Eater 3 but I don’t like the new focus on Souls elements in action games. Man God Eater 3 is so good. It’s better than Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. I haven’t played Monster Hunter World so I don’t have an opinion on that. God Eater 4 needs to happen. After seeing Scarlet Nexus, It looks to me like another God Eater like Action game with fluid combat. Is the combat good like God Eater 3!?!??

    The combat in this game was definitely the best thing about this as well as the soundtrack. This style of fighting melee mixed with telekinesis was super cool. The two biggest problems I had with it was the story got boring at super points and the INSANE amount of cutscenes. There’s so many cutscenes and the ending sequence of the game drags out for hours and hours. It does this yet somehow I feel like I finished the game really quickly. The story is definitely the weakest aspect of the game. If the combat wasn’t as cool as it is i likely would have dropped it.

    I love anime and JRPGs, but man, do I not like this game. I don't like the story and I hate the combat. The story they're telling aggravates me due to how they're telling it; sudden plot twists with little to no build up and character decisions that make no sense. The characters don't move away from their tropes and fail to have any proper depth to them, therefore failing to be interesting. The character tropes I would've been fine with if they're just in a story that I don't really have to take seriously, but the world and narrative requires that I do, and it just hurts the experience for me.
    The constant interruptions of the flow I have during combat irks me so much. Every hit gives you a noticeable millisecond delay in order to have the player feel the weight of the hit, but it halts my button inputs. Psychokinesis has a 1 to 6 second delay depending on the object you're moving and when a fight is frantic, that delay can screw one over. Enemy telegraphy also sucks and if you want to pull off a perfect dodge, pray to God and hope to high heaven it works. All of my perfect dodges have been accidents, never intentional, and because of the randomness of it, I've given up on perfect dodges and just relied on the sidesteps that also interrupt the flow of combat with a noticeable millisecond delay. Scrolling through my item shortcuts even started to annoy me.
    I'm really sad that I can't enjoy this game. It has all the basics that I want from an anime game. An extensive story, action combat, tons of characters, an interesting world, stunning environments... and I can't enjoy any of them.
