It's amazingly done to portray exactly that through mechanics, I love it. Because you're new recruits to the OSF, you are demonstrably weaker than most major enemies unless you rely on each other, especially on Hard. You almost never want to fight battles 'raw' (without SAS Links) unless you're doing a challenge run of some kind. It's a really smart idea that applies on both the micro and macro levels. You get better at using your SAS resources as you play the game more, moment-to-moment, and you unlock more advanced functions for the system by Bonding Up with your platoon members. It's great.

      @@bitchless5104 Spoiler below:
Yuito is a natural dud (unpowered) with an implanted power when he was young and in the hospital prior to his mom’s death by Togetsu (Moon Cult led by a psychic super computer)
Same hospital Luka and Karen Travers were in.
Combined with the canonical pain of the SAS system and Brain Field he is risking permanent brain damage and later in life the loss of his powers.
It is natural for psionics in this world to lose powers as they age so they take anti aging hormones to prolong the effectiveness of their OSF personnel. That’s why you have Genma who is in his 50s looking as good as he is. Or Arashi and Luka being senior members in OSF but still look like children.
This is for natural psionics. Yuito isn’t natural so there is more risk for him to lose his powers despite how powerful he is by the end.
And yes Yuito is in pain but if you keep it on long enough like Kasane says it would probably numb away. But after the game ends it’s only natural for Yuito to retire. So much experimentation on his brain and the fact he’s half clone is a recipe for disaster if he keeps hooking stuff to his head.
Love his character since he’s a leader by necessity with the strength of his father and compassion of his mother.
Folks say they prefer Kasane but she’s not good when it comes to communication ie. her trying to kill Yuito without explanation.
Sorry for this long comment. I fell in love with this game and its world. Hope to see sequels taking place on the moon. Or we fight Aragami with the God Eaters.

Lol, the story is garbage. It's the most generic anime plot ever. The twists were super predictable. The characters were annoying most of the times, though there were a couple that were interesting, but the visual novel approach was horrible. Look, I played tales of arise, which was from the same studio iirc, and that was good, cuz despite being VN style, it wasn't overbearing.....took about a minute at best and you could do at any point. In scarlet nexus, you had VN phases that kept going on and on and on and on for several minutes and one after the other without proper management of gameplay to balance it off. Overall, not a good game. Y'all may like mediocre shit, which is evident given how much poor anime there is today and yet ppl liking them, but imma call out a crappy game when I see it. Game had potential, it just didn't live up to it!!!

@@enzocrespin5806 Yes, there are several major flaws within the game:
      1. *The city feels dead and empty.* You can talk to some pedestrians or even obtain "side quests" from NPCs, but otherwise there's nothing else to do. *There's only one shop in the game, and it's handled by an NPC that doubles as a save station.*
      2. *Boring "side quests"* that seem more like a challenge rather than an actual quest, like *"kill an enemy with this method"* or *"collect an item then return it to quest giver".*
      3. *Poor NG+ design and replayability.* Imagine spending hours to get the best equipment for your team, only to find out *there's no level scaling in EX New Game (NG+) and everything dies in one hit.*
I would argue that the characters in the game are pretty bland with shallow development; the sort you always see in generic anime/manga series. But these things are subjective, so I'll leave it at that.

The main thing Scarlet Nexus makes me think is that I wish Bamco did more original stuff like this. I mean, the plot and writing might not be world shaking but I'd much rather have more of this, and interesting combat systems to boot, than the endless grind of going through whichever anime arc of whichever popular show - that fans of said anime know like the back of their hands - they've decided to push each year. Oh, one thing I would say is that the dualsense haptics really add to the combat if you're playing on PS5 - the feedback is subtle but feeling the tension build in the trigger as you prepare a psychokenisis attack really adds to fighting and the feeling of that tension breaking and the trigger going limp if you get hit before it's done really hammers home the disappointment you didn't get to let it fly.

One thing about the SAS system. You can upgrade the powers by increasing your bonds with the respective characters. Sometimes it can change the power entirely, for example, clairvoyance: allows you to see invisible enemies and get perfect dodges easier. Not much right? When you fully upgrade it, it does all that PLUS: increasing crush damage (think sekiros guard system, once the bar is gone, then it's an instakill) & allows you to instantly stun an enemy off a perfect dodge counter

I finished the Yuito campaign without maxing the bond on 4 characters (they were all level 5 but I couldn't get them any higher) and I was weeping by the end of the credits.

  • @theoaremevano3227

I may very slow at getting through games compared to most people, but I finally got through the story on Yuitos' side. (Based on the demo, I played the entire game on Hard mode, and that was definitely the right choice.) Warning, long ass comment:
First, the combat really is sublime. Some may look at the move list and wonder why you don't get a lot of new attacks for your main weapon, but the SAS menu is where the real meat and potatoes of combat can be found, and that DOES include more attacks where you use your allies to attack, and some cases where you do get new moves entirely like Hanabi's flamethrower.
The strategy of combat feels incredible because your powers aren’t just one extra thing added. They have multiple properties both offensive and defensive. Tsugumi’s power might seem like it has no offense to it, but one of the first upgrades you get is an effect that makes counters with her power crack enemy armor instantly. Gemma’s gives you ways to set up attacks you wouldn’t have a window for normally. Kagero’s invisibility adds a unique charge attack to your move list that you can absolutely use as part of your combos, especially if you activate hypervelocity to slow time while you charge. The game does make good use of these powers too, they’re not just there as toys in a game where you could just hack through with your sword. Especially on hard mode, you NEED to be quick on the draw with your powers in some fights. The general flow of combat is finding a good approach to go in with and thinking on your feet to change strategies as your current powers run out and others recharge.
The story is pretty zany and it definitely has a lot to say about our own interconnected world, particularly in some of the individual character scenes. Gemma’s absolutely surprised me, hitting on a topic I’m sure is seen in many contemporary countries, but is particularly an issue here in the States. It works a good bit like Xillia II wherein you switch back and forth between main story events and chilling out with side content in the spaces between (minus being in debt this time. XD ) My thoughts on the panel scenes are that they’re actually a good idea for handling scenes where the characters would mainly just be standing around talking (you know, like normal people). They do a good job focusing on expressions. Going back to Gemma’s story, there was one panel at the end of his where just his change in expression said SO much about how much he’d changed. I love the rest of the companions just as much too, especially Shiden, Luka and Kagero, not to mention I already love Kasane, and this isn’t even her side of the story yet. What about Yuito? Well I have to say, he got steadily more interesting as he started to get his bearings from being a fish out of water at the start and ended up being one of my favorites because of an exclusive scene in his story around chapter 10. He turned a trope I’ve seen many times in video game upside down in the best way and even made me laugh. XD Suffice it to say, he’s got more personal motivations then you’d expect at first glance.
This game is absolutely a Tales game in Sci-fi mode and I love all of that. A scene partway into the story pretty much confirms this is a Tales game thanks to a running joke in the series. XD Some things in the story could be better, and I think side quests (which work like client orders in PSO2, or perhaps NGS would be more accurate as you can complete them remotely) should offer you memory items for customization instead of actual items as they rarely offered me anything I actually needed. Fortunately character quests comprise the bulk of side content. I’m always inclined to ask for more enemies to add to the mix as well, but I have to admit, the endgame fights felt pretty satisfying taking on powerful targets all at once and tearing them a new one because I had so many tricks at my disposal. I absolutely want more games and I’m glad I have a postgame and another playthrough yet to run. :)

You just earned yourself a new subscriber! I havent played Scarlet Nexus yet and a lot of video reviews I've watched nit-pick and they don't seem to realize what Bamco JRPGs are like. JRPGs get a bad rep a lot of times because non JRPG fans on gaming sites do the reviews. They think Final Fantasy VII is the best JRPG to exist and try to use that as a Base for Role Playing Adventure games. It's honestly annoying. It's a big reason the (J)RPG industry died but thankfully it's making a comeback due to solo games getting good reviews recently so people are starting to enjoy stories and RPGs again.

@@JRPGGaming I understand that of course. It just drives me nuts when they will use such a broad term as psychokinesis. That basically refers to power of the mind as a whole instead of what it actually is. Now I haven't had a chance to play the game yet but I know from playing games like Psi Ops and watching movies like Carrie and Firestarter that a term like psychokinesis is just too broad a generalization, like for example, does the game have any pyrokinetics, in case you didn't know, the general term for a pyrokinetic is a "Firestarter".
But if the characters are only moving things with their mind, they're telekinetic and should be called as such. Just a minor nitpick though lol

But looking at all of the different, often unrelated games widely called action RPGs. There's been so many of them and so many different types of them in the last 10 years alone that it'd be pretty hard for this to be 'hands down' the best one.

Square, square, square, triangle, R2, repeat until enemy is dead.

6 hours in and loving it but I am really not a fan of the Still comic book like cutscenes. A lot of them are just characters talking but more than a couple have also been fighting scenes and it can be difficult to really see what is happening or the impact of an attack with the still shots.
The side quests also seem awful, the quest objectives so far have no relevance to the quest dialouge. E.g. 1 side quest was an npc complaining about enemies destroying his house. Quest objective, kill 3 particular flying enemies with a special ability.
Otherwise seems great and am loving it.

Taking aside the common trend that pretty much all Anime-like games are always overbloated in ratings in steam and pretty much every rating platform (due to smaller demographics of the market base and said people have a real unending thirst for Anime-art games, no matter how bad). Scarlet Nexus was a bit, disappointing for me and I had really low expectations coming into the game.
I love Bandai-Namco games, Code Vein was one of my favorite games to play, so is the Tales series. And the only thing that I can honestly say good about this game is the combat, and that's stretching it, because Code Vein and (one) Tales series games did it much better. But it's still good to play, and I have no complaints about the combat system.
The other parts are really bad though. Like I don't understand how people would actually not rate it bad, don't you people ever play games that actually have good plot, narrative, character development, world building and structure? No? Witcher 3? Dragon Age? Mass Effect? Baldur's? FF series? God of War? How's Scarlet Nexus story is even remotely good? it's like it's written by a 15 year old who has no idea how story progression in games works. The plot is so convoluted in the first few chapters that I have no idea how they managed to maintain the entire structure of the narrative. The character development was so bad that I literally couldn't care less about the other characters aside from Kaname and Yuito. And plot holes... don't even go there.
