- In this video, Mosaic Wood Frames: Painting, Staining, and Preparing for Mosaic, Kim demonstrates finishing techniques for wooden mosaic frames. She also explains the benefits of applying a scratch coat of thin-set mortar if you intend to utilize a thin-set bed for your setting technique. Additionally, she shares an alternative adhesive approach using PVA glue for those who prefer not to use thin-set. If you're not comfortable using thin-set, this technique is for you.

Love your Common sense tips and tricks! 💕
Thanks so much!
Love those frames & the tip about creating a black background! Thanks!
Our pleasure!
Beautiful mosaic! 💕
I like the background painted black. I've never done a mosaic without grouting it and I'd like to try this whole idea! I have Wellbond, just haven't used it yet. Thanks for the video and good ideas!
Thanks to you both.
Nice work. !
Thanks! Keep creating!
Another great tutorial! Thanks so much! When working with stone, do you ever seal it when you’re planning on grouting? I’m worried my white marble stones/tiles will get discolored when I grout. Thought sealing might prevent that. LOVED the cookie tip, too! You guys are awesome!
Sorry for delay in answering, I just saw this question. Stone is typically not grouted, especially if you are using the riven edge. There are stone sealants on the market, check your local tile distributor. That cookie tip, we have so much fun making these videos because we just yap along the way!
Kim, did you say any cement based adhesive can be used for the skim coat? 💕 I am in Australia and I haven't seen that product before!
You can use the same thinset you’ll be using as your adhesive. (from Bonnie) Thanks for being a fan
Thanks again…. I live in Mexico. I have never used stone pieces like your mosaic. Where is a good place to buy the stone or did you use a hammer and hardie to break the stone up yourself? Gracias Kathie 🐢
These stones can be purchased from witsendmosaic.com/marble-stone.html
We cut them with compound tile nippers, not all stone will cut with nippers, but much does.
So do you not score the wood and do a PVA glue wash over the wood before painting black or staining?
The acrylic primer or the scratch coat of thin-set both serve that purpose and these frames are excellent quality hardwood. The acrylic paint has similar polymers to PVA glues so we still get that nice mechanical bond.
