The Volkswagen Transport T6 is certainly on the more premium end of the commercial van segment, but people also flock to it as a go-to #vanlife van too.
But, they also have a pretty terrible reputation when it comes to reliability and maintenance. So what exactly are you getting yourself in for if you're thinking of buying one?

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

I've had a multitude of problems with mine in the 5 years of its life even when its been treated like a Bentley,... new EGR valve, new Dual Mass Flywheel, new Crankshaft, new battery, new timing belt and pulleys, cracked EGR pipe, new door mechanism the list goes on but I still love it. Remember its a work vehicle, my business pays for it. If it were my own vehicle coming out of my wages I wouldn't bother because I would be slammed with £1000 - £2000 bills at random. It's a vehicle for those who won't lose sleep over the repair bills.

I have had a t6 150bhp long wheel base for around 3 years here in Scotland. Main problem has been the central locking and either the rear barn doors or the sliding side door not opening. It takes a good few attempts of lock/unlock to get it to eventually open and its been a recurring problem since day one. I will, when work permits, get it booked in to change the locks to high security and do away with VW locks altogether,( its been booked in a couple of times under warranty to get the locking mechanisms changed but they then replace with the same part and you get the same problem). I still like the van but its been a major headache getting to a customers house and you cant access tools or materials. Being self employed, time is money.

I’ve got a T5.1 Highline Kombi, 140ps, DSG, Swb, Fwd, with the big tailgate since brand new in 2014 and have had no problems whatsoever! I’ve got a friend with the 204ps T6 and he has had so many issues which include the engine shutting down at 80 mph on the motorway and it got so bad Vw gave him a full refund and the option to get a free brand new T6.1! The power is not so bad for a van due to the amount of torque. Only little issue is the windscreen wipers blades having to be changed quite a bit due to the squeaking noise they produce because the blades are so big. Anyways, great review and good luck you future Transporter owners! 👍

I have a T3 myself but can attest transporters and euro cars in general do not hold a candle to the Japanese cars and vans we get here as far as reliability is concerned. All my friends with T5 and T6 have had issues. Maybe we just get the bad ones. Or they don't like our hot weather and rough roads.

I've had my 204bhp T32 Sportline for 3yrs with only one issue that you have mentioned. The DSG gearbox does sometimes selects a too high gear on downhills, that said a touch of the accelerator sorts that's out. I personally cant fault them and in the UK there doesn't seem to be much trouble with them and I am on a load of VW T6 Facebook owners groups. I had a T4 for 10yrs before that and again a very reliable vehicle.

@@shanewaller2864 mate so far and its been 3yrs I've not had an issue with it, The DSG gearbox like I said on downhills does select a higher gear but a little tap and it selects the correct one. Absolutely amazing vehicle, you have to question if the guy in the vid had a bad van as it cant be a general comment. I'm on loads of VW T6/T6.1 groups and yes some do have niggles but nothing major. these vans are best sellers in the UK for a reason, they are bomb proof and extremely reliable. The water ingress seems to be when people fit there own roof bars and do not use silicone to seal where the bolts go. One issue with water holding in the tailgate was solved by taking the 4 or 5 rubber bungs out, apparently that was an after market solution, why the bungs were put in the first place god only knows. The drain holes are the same as the ones in the both front doors so why they put bungs in to hold the water mystifies me. Hope this helps. Join T6/T6.1 Facebook groups and all your questions will be answered in depth.

So are you saying dabbing the throttle drops into a lower gear? Mine does the opposite. For engine braking it goes low and if I dab the throttle it goes to a higher gear. Mine is the 204 DSG 4 motion and we had it converted to a camper when it was new. Done 60K and the only problem has been the dreaded heater fan control failing as each of the previous ones we’ve owned. I’ve had T2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and wouldn’t have a different make. Hmm gotta say I’m still a fan of them… I did have to get a gearbox rebuilt on my first one but at 250,000kms so not unreasonable, and a mecatronix box went in my new one at 7000kms but was looked after by vw really well under warranty. Thing is all the other van options have their own horror stories so to anyone watching you really are just choosing your own poison 😂 transporters rock and I’m not going back to the hiace

Agreed all vans have their horror stories. The vans have a hard life always carrying loads, toeing ect. Got 330k out of my t5 only replaced the clutch once. 220k out of t6 no issues and just got a t6.1 with dsg all previous models were regularly serviced and had 6 speed manual box never had aircon go on me like video said. The dsg seems to be what was the main problem for all VW models had one changed in a 2017 polo under warranty no problems since. Apparently it’s been fixed now and fingers crossed as finally made the switch

I had a 2012 Crafter that never had any troubles, now I've got a 2016 Crafter and I'm selling and never going back to any Euro car EVER. VW are charging me $550 for a 15cm long hose that costs $33 after market. I couldn't get this after market one quickly enough so I had to fork out this absurd amount for a piece of rubber. They are killing their own market imo by the price of their parts/servicing. I also had to pay $1500 to replace the starter motor. I've had this newer model for 3 months. Nothing but troubles with it so far. I'm getting a Toyota. That is a smart option down under in Aus.

Hi Todd. When we researched the Transporter in the weeks leading up to filming the video, we reached out to multiple mechanics and technicians, especially those we know that work on loads of vans, plus we spoke to a few friends that are VW service technicians (that also work on their dealerships other brands), and everyone we spoke to make it clear that the amount of VW vans they fix vs how many have been sold, is far more extreme than say the equivalent Toyota or Hyundai.
It's by no means a perfect science at all but when even VW technicians are pleading with us to tell the world how unreliable Transporters are, something is wrong with that van. - AK

Obviously there are thousands of owners like yourself and my mate that owns this very Transporter that has never and (possibly) will never have an issue however, even a quick search online raises many concerns regarding their reliability and longevity. - AK

Even though there are genuine issues with these VW engines that do require regular observation & preventative maintenance, The mechanic is also describing problems that are associated with owning any modern turbo diesel. Please Jim Hull, tell me about a maker of modern turbo Diesel engines fitted with EGR and DPF, that DOESN’T have DPF and EGR issues?
That’s ok, I’ll wait. As for mentioning dieselgate,, please explain how does that effect the engines reliability exactly? Sounds like you’re letting your own personal anti VW bias destroy any perceived objectivity with this vehicle.
Fact is EVERY modern turbo Diesel engine is fitted with absolute garbage devices that are designed to lower emissions, and they do this by slowly killing your engine by allowing them to effectively eat their own waste products while also at the same time trying to constipate them to the point of totally blocking their exhaust. No manufacturer has found a way around this issue yet, and nor will they.

VW poor reliability in general more often than not, either stems from owners not looking after them properly, modifying them without knowing what they are doing , or massive over-exaggeration, and van owners in particular expect a lot from their vehicles and rightly so, but also rinse the crap out of them and fail to look service them properly when they require. The worst thing you can do is go on the internet and look for the problems (goes for anything in life) as the unhappiest will scream the loudest. You said it yourself that these are the most popular vans in the world, therefor the number of people who will have issues with them will be higher quite obviously. If you believed everything you read on the internet, you wouldn’t wake up in the morning. For every 10 people who have issues with their transporter, there are hundreds who don’t, but those people aren’t going to randomly say anything at all, they will only start speaking when they have a problem. I’ve never had any issues with any VW or Audi I have owned over the last 5 years and I’m currently driving a 2019 A6 and 2021 T6.1. These are quite obviously very well engineered, well built vans. The metal on these transporters is at least twice the thickness of your transits or PSA dispatch or boxers of the world (if you’ve ever stripped them aren’t without their problems, but it’s on the whole quite futile. Can’t go pretending no other van or car has ever had any issues. Those issues you mention with panel gaps, air conditions, failing wipers, water ingress et al, I’ve literally never heard of at all. I can only assume they build them very well for Europe and very poorly for elsewhere in the world 🤷‍♀️ lastly, asking a mechanic about issues with a van that’s very popular is liking asking a doctor if people are healthy. You’ll only get one answer, and given the fact he thinks “dieselgate” is a problem, kind of says it all lol

First gen T6 which was released in 2010 was a bit of a dud, but the T6 being reviewed has had a lot of these initial problems sorted which AK, the presenter, fails to mention or just doesn’t know enough of the revisions in the T6 lifespan to know about. Simple fact is that there is actually no other van on the market that even comes close to the power, torque & AWD capabilities of the VW Transporter. Even the TDI 340 can easily be retuned to get closer to 400 nm reliably. None of these attributes were even mentioned in this rather biased review. But that’s more or less expected from these guys when they review anything VW.

    • @ReDriven

Mate did you miss the countless sections where I compliment the Transporter?
If you have an issue with the common faults we raised, maybe bring it up with the owners groups and forums and VW technicians we spoke to to gather this information.
I've said this countless times but yet again, I am a HUGE VW fan. If I could afford it, I'd have a Golf R wagon in a heartbeat but the more I learn when researching these videos, the more VW issues and horror stories we encounter. Even with care and attention, we see far too many reports of major issues.
ReDriven exists to educate and warn people of the risks involved in buying used cars, even if this means I have to communicate negative information on cars I personally love.
When we started ReDriven, I assumed my beloved VW were excellent cars even when used, and thanks to the marketing and German heritage this is a commonly held opinion however, the reports and countless discussions we've had with those in the know, those that work on used cars day in day out, clearly show a different story.
If people are happy to take the risk, that's great as long as they're educated in the risks they are taking but when someone forks out tens of thousands of dollars on a car they assume is reliable and cost effective thanks to it's image, and then said car fails, costing them thousands of dollars, that is not on.
Side note, the Transporter featured in this video has begun to have some major mechanical issues. - AK

    • @sunsetgarage755
      @sunsetgarage755 Před rokem

@@ReDriven Don’t take it personally AK, you always ask for comments on what viewers think you missed at the end of your video, & I’m giving some from my own personal experience, having owned many transporters over 3 decades, & probably over a million kms. Some are more reliable than others, but all are easily fixable if you know their quirks & avoid buying anything DSG. I watch most of your reviews on other vehicles & usually find them enjoyable & informative. You usually present very well & usually fairly unbiased, but your overemphasis of unreliability in every VW review I’ve seen you do is pretty obvious, and probably not just to me.
Edit, sorry your friend is having issues, I’m guessing it’s to do with the DSG which truly is shit (6speed manual is much better) or related to EGR or DPF. Other than those known issues, the single turbo TDI 340 is usually very reliable. Hope he gets it sorted, it’s obvious he takes pride in his van & it looks great.

@@sunsetgarage755 We do genuinely appreciate the feedback mate and seriously, thanks so much for watching and commenting.
What we are finding is that fans and owners of all the brands we feature often feel we are too critical of their brand of choice.
For example I have a number of Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Mazda, Alfa, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Jeep, Audi and Kia/Hyundai fans all accusing me of being anti their brands of choice. Yet at the same time, apparently I’m also biased towards these brands from the perspective of others.
We genuinely just report the evidence and information we research and try our hardest to not show bias.
I am always concerned my love of VW and or Porsche may come across as far too obvious and please know, when I receive the research pack and start digging into all the info, I’m heartbroken when it’s a VW product and the list of common faults goes on and on.
On the other hand, I have never personally felt any affinity to Lexus as a brand yet the bloody things seem to never go bad. I wish one day I look into a Lexus model and it’s riddled with problems.
I totally agree that with your comments that with a little mechanical knowledge and know how, many issues can easily be fixed by owners but this is a tiny minority of owners, the vast majority just want to get in and drive and not consider the moving parts underneath, which is a huge shame. - AK
