Quite a bit of configurability too for settings. All in all, well aged visuals. Damage modeling is quite nice and car models are pretty high poly for 2004.
Playing it on max settings on pc it still looks fantastic, however it looks pretty shit on console these days

It's quite difficult to pick up my favorite between 1 and 2. The cars behave differently compared to the other. But I'm happy that the second installment is much longer on gameplay.

FlatOut 4 was a huge disappointment for me actually. I tried playing it and could not after a couple hours, the tracks are terrible there just littered with unnecessary objects and the tracks are not clear enough or have any walls you always start going too fast and cant tell where your supposed to be going causing you to fly off the track hitting rocks and all this other ridiculous debris. i actually hated it. loved the earlier ones though.

Everything in the enviroment can damage your car, + you have levels of damage, depending on the weight of the props, but also depending on the speed they hit you, plus they also alter the control of your car depending on how hard the hit is, plus also depends on the terrain....plus the damage affects the control of your car....if you get your doors hanging, you have less control when turning, if you damage the tires, you loose grip and speed, and your car starts to wobble, if you break one tire, you can't turn correctly, and you start to burn the track with the metal scratch.............the physics of this game are beyond time and space. No other racing game can compare to this

Everything after Ultimate Carnage wasn't from Bugbear Entertainment and so Flatout has basically been sold back then and the rights to use that name aren't theirs anymore. It nowadays is just a name or brand that sells and attracts lots of players from the old Flatout games that were still developed by Bugbear, but nowadays it's main use is for shady developers to cash grab and to just feed off of the popularity or nostalgia that kinda surrounds Flatout with sadly yet another shitty version of it.

I'm actually surprised how the guys at Strategy First, after realizing the blunder of FlatOut 3, never even thought of renaming themselves to Strategy Last.
I LOVED FlatOut 2, I played it so much and as I saw the clips, all of the good memories came back :D It is incredible how well the physics and the model of destrucion were developed for this time
Fun fact: flatout 2 damage model isnt randomized but they looked so good that it trixed the player of thinking they were randomized

I played it today after a LP from Flatout 2.
I canceled my plan to LP FlatOut 1, becouseits not really funny.
- No good controll of the Cars
- Winning Derbys by time you need to wreck anyone and not by points
- No display for the Health of the enemys
- Buggy menu controll
- The Control in Stunt events just fells lame and bad.
After 32 Parts of playing FlatOut 2, FO1 was no fun to me.
FO2 made so much things better. There are only a few things they are better then in FO1 but i cant explain this too in english.
The reasons why i didn't like FO1 should be enough.

Mr.FlyingZoom3rz is the same with better graphics and more thing to do so yes, it's better. I'm a flatout fan and it's annoying to see that it lost the essence on the last two (3 and 4, which in truth, are 4 and 5).
If you want to play ultimate carnage on Windows 10 you have to install games for Windows (supposedly not compatible with win10) but there's an installer that i can share you, i play steam version nowadays without any issue :)

Flat out 1 is the best one in the series and here's my justification :
1. Realistic car handling and damage models :
- Hitting the ground hard damages your suspension and makes the vehicle harder to drive.
- Hitting your car against objects dents the metal at the point of impact.
- Hitting a fence promptly turns you and brings you to a halt. Hitting a wall of tires actually feels like you've hit a high-resistance rubber mass.
2. Swerving, challenging tracks with believable material friction.
3. Bots consider you when driving and often feel like they intentionally fuck you over, just like you would - them. If you notice in playthroughs, if you've stopped in place, the bots will try to swerve around you in stead of plowing through you and will try to push you out of their way if you're pressed against them long enough.
4. Steep learning curve. The more you play, the better you get and the more enjoyment you have out of a race.
Here's my disappointments with Flat out 2:
1. Tracks feel a lot more linear.
2. Objects' weight has been reduced to the point they're just there for spectacle when you plow through them.
3. There's not a lot that you have to look out for when driving. Most tracks have wide roads with a lot of room for error.
4. The damage models are not as impressive as those in 1, it takes a lot to dent a car and you can barely feel a change in the handling if the car is hammered. Also cars feel glued to the ground, it's pretty hard to flip in this game.
I'm not saying FO2 is a bad game. It's definitely a worthy racing game and the graphic / sound design surpasses FO1. However it's a lot more arcade-y.
FO3 is a joke physics and gameplay-wise. It also has terminal Bloom cancer, typical for games in that era.
FO4 has an existential crisis. It's an arcade game that tries to take itself way too seriously with moody color palette, the ragdoll physics are inferior and the physics are super fucking weird.
I loved the original Flatout game!!!!

my favourite is the very first one. the physics and graphics were sober and more realistic, it was a real pleasure to watch cars turn slowly into pieces like they would in the real life. Flatout 2 was also good, they added some extreme features to the gameplay. a litle less realistic but still great. after that bugbear lost their rights on the name and the next ones were made by some incompetent coders. if anyone wants something like the good old game, you should look after the new game bugbear is developing: Next Car Game: Wreckfest.

Flatout 1 has best engine sounds, no doubt. Engine volume relative to other sounds is perfect and the sounds themselves are bloody excellent. Bullet and all the gold class cars have some roaring sounds.
Flatout had by far the best physics and driving model of the series. Flatout 2 was slightly more arcadey but made up for it by greatly expanding the vehicle roster, tracklist and destruction.
I still like the first the most though.
The rest are gargabe though.

While I enjoyed 2 and UC way more than 1, there was one crazy cool thing I did with the game.
On one I never played the races. I was always a derby fan (especially the concrete bowl). When my health got close to death, I accelerated around the edges of the bowl and turned right to fly out of the bowl. If you hit the fence correctly, your guy will fly out of the car and land in the area outside. It's just a piece of flat land with some bushes. However, if your guy flies out far enough, he will go into the black zone. Wait like 10 seconds, and do the replay of the demo. Fast forward to where your guy flies out, and bring it to slow motion. When the guy goes into the black zone, he will start like having a seizure or something. It's very funny. Keep in mind I only did this on the ps2 and idk if it works on the other versions. If you still have a ps2, I would recommend doing this : )

FlatOut aged like Terminator: The first 2 phenomenal releases were developed by the original creator, but then it was given to someone else and things took a different turn.
(Yes, I know FlatOut UC basically counts as a 3rd release but you get the idea.)
Gotta love how Flatour 2 and UC look very believable in how a big metal hunk on wheels might behave, and then you have FO3 which looks like RC cars on a magnet track... XD

According to that, Ultimate carnage gets 12/10. It's Fo2 but with more stuff, running on updated engine.
Games for windows live make it get 7/10 at best, people forget that big flaw in the game. And make it an inferior game overall compared to FlatOut 2.
No LAN support means you depend of a third party with expiration date.
You also forget that Flatout 2's online multiplayer was ran on the late GameSpy, meaning that online multiplayer is impossible for it now. At least Ultimate Carnage still has multiplayer thanks to GFWL. I personally don't see what the big fuss is about that program being attached to games. Every single game that I've played that has GFWL never gave me any issues. In any case, Flatout 2 is still good because it has the massive modpack Flatout Joint, and Ultimate Carnage is still good because of it's functional multiplayer. Flatout 1 only has that nostalgia factor and super soft body physics. Flatout 3 holds it's position as the lowest rated game on Steam for a reason, and the developers of Flatout 4 are trying their best to make the game faithful to the first three games (1, 2, UC), while working with an upgraded engine. That being said, I still have a stronger nostalgia factor for Flatout 2, but overall, Ultimate Carnage is the superior game.

Big fat lie, Flatout 2 have LAN that mean you can have multiplayer forever, just use tunngle or any other like it. Why you think people still play NFS Underground 1, 2 and most wanted? All thanks to LAN mode.
Flatout UC doesnt have LAN that means it depend of the garbage GFWL. Even the savegames have DRM, you cant share em. Pretty sad.
The added details and extra cars dont make up for the big flaws added by Micro$oft.

Flatout is a game about wrecking other cars and race at the same time, Flatout 2 gave you a good feeling when crashing another car because the sound is so satisfying also the nitro sound really nice. Flatout 4 crashing sound isn't really anything it sound like if you're scratching someones car with a coin, and whenever you press the nitro button the sound of the car engine changes radically it's just weird
It's nice to see how game graphics has been improved since mid 2000's. Until early 2010's, graphics development were a bit slow, games used to be graphically improved with the use of some simple techniques which made the game look prettier: lens flare, bloom (to much bloom...), some reflections, motion blur and some cinematic effects. Since 2011-12, graphics has been improved faster than ever I think.
Basicly newest REAL flatout is Wreckfest, which is in Steam early-access. Thats one hell of a entertaining racing game!
I bought both games FO1 and 2 three days ago. I wanted to check if Wreckfest would be a good choice for me to buy, because I loved FO 1 insanely back in the day. So I decided to feed my apetite for destruction with something I already know. And wow, FO1 still looks amazing for its age. I finished the game in one session. When I started FO2 next ( which I've never played before) I was pretty dissappointed how shitty it looks. Pure garbage, but the gameplay has been improved. I definetely will go for Wreckfest, to show the Bugbear Devs my appreciation and mad respect for what they've created.
