I think the prewar problem you were referencing is “zinc pest” where metallurgic contamination causes the casting to expand and crumble over time. It resurfaced in the 90s as we started engaging cheap overseas manufacturing.

The triple dom and single dom are really nice but I like the tuinn dom I think it's way so over looked.....

Thanks for posting. Very informative. I've got a bunch of wonky couplers. Maybe a good clean will take care of them.

I am wondering what your thoughts are using a silver polish cotton wadding called NeverDul. It is available at most hardware stores. I have used it for cleaning rusty parts like the coupler armaturesfor anumber of years with great success. However I do not use it on plastic parts as I feel the chemical in NeverDul might harm it.

I think on those metal polish products they say not to use them on plastic. Get a "junker" and try it, I imagine it would damage the paint.

Possibly once used as a garden train.

Repared for 50 years. NEVER bend the four fingers . Instead pry between the side frame and the wheel. Pop the axles out of the sockets. Clean wheels with a Dremel wire brush . Use Scotch Brite to remove rust.
Use an old tooth brush and gun oil to protect the metal from further rusting .

Ok. Question: how do you replace a flying shoe without bending the fingers? Only slightly deviated from this repair.
