  • 'Wild Vietnam' | The Story of Environmental Impact of Vietnam War
    Directed by : Amit Goswamy
The real stories of a war-zone are always hidden in the hearts of the soldiers fighting the war. While some stories still makes their way out, the story of wildlife in a war-zone is never told. Presenting 'Wild Vietnam' which attempts to tell the story of the Vietnam war from the perspective of wildlife.
Vietnam is a jewel of South-East Asia, a country known for its breathtaking landscapes and natural beauty. In a quest to understand the wildlife and dynamics of conservation in Vietnam a team of two Wildlife Biologists from India : Amit Goswamy & Chetan Rao went to explore the national parks and conservation centres of Vietnam.
The documentary portrays a larger picture of environment conservation connecting the dots of historical inclinations and the impact of the war on the ecology of Vietnam.
While working on this documentary we did a thorough research on various events of Vietnam war while concentrating on its environmental impact.
In order to study the island ecosystems we explored Hay Long Bay - a group of about 2000 islands which has been carved for millions of years. We also explored the islands geological features for the signs of wildlife including Cat Ba island and Cat Ba national Park.
Endemism is inherent in an island system due to the isolation that limits the movement of various species between the island and the mainland. This restricted movement also limits the genetic diversity of the species living in the islands in comparison to the mainland. This makes the species living in the islands relatively vulnerable and more prone to extinction.
The beautiful Karst ecosystems of Vietnam and limestone islands also features numerous cave systems that can be explored through Kayaks, we took this opportunity to explore the undersides of the karst mountains through the kayaks understanding the ecosystem in a more personal way.
We also followed the story of the Cat Ba Langur, which is one of the rarest primates in Vietnam with a population of less than 100 individuals in the world. A species found only in the Cat Ba island and is recovering from the brink of extinction.
We explored the terrestrial ecosystem of Vietnam through the Cuc Phuong national park, which is the largest and the oldest national park in Vietnam.
Despite the amazing primary forest in Vietnam, most of the species are difficult to spot and are found in low numbers.
    Threats:
One of the reasons for the low species density is the hunting culture in Vietnam, because of which many species are at the brink of extinction. Also wildlife of the country faced a major setback because of the impact of the 20 year long Vietnam War.
    Extinction:
Many species like the Javan Rhino have already gone extinct in Vietnam.
Also the large mammals like Clouded Leopard and the Tiger are found in extremely low density and might already have gone extinct in Vietnam.
This story is an earnest attempt to study the impact of wars on the ecosystems and a tribute to the soldiers from either side.
While the victory in this war may be debated the profound impact on humanity and environment was always beyond doubt.
    Love & Peace.
