    • @daaneekhof
      @daaneekhof Před 2 lety +15

You're not "required" per se, they usually assume you'll be taking lessons in a manual car. Imo that is the best way to take your driving lessons etc. Mainly because you get experience with driving a stick and second (at least in Europe) you get a driver's license with which you are allowed to drive manual and automatic.
If you specifically tell them you only want to take the lessons in an automatic and get your driver's license you aren't allowed to drive a manual.

-For anyone trying to learn stick/manual, step#1 is NOT "throw it into 1st and take off". (fyi - no offense to Charlie's dad ... I'm assuming he knows this is effectively a joke, as a twitch chat comeback + charlie is like 25 at this point, so I suppose that kind of changes the teaching dynamic)
In any case - after the general explanation of manual transmissions, the 1st exercise is "feeling for engagement" (there is some dead space, between slightly letting out the clutch, and letting it out just enough, to where the transmission connects the engine to your wheels, and moves the car). You need to know where the clutch starts engaging.
--Then, you need to SLOWLY let it out, to where the car doesn't feel like there's an earthquake (or, sputter), anyone experienced can pretty easily slowly let it out and let the car roll (on level ground, with a normal car like a mazda3 for instance).
-Once you get a feel for how to *slowly* let the clutch out, you start learning the true task: shifting into 1st gear, letting the clutch out (while adding gas), and have a smooth full engagement.
--Starting out, people have trouble with this, so I usually recommend "just adding a little bit of bonus gas" before you start (if you idle at 800rpm, use some gas to idle at 1200): this keeps RPMs from going too low that ends up stalling the car.
It's worth noting that the clutch isn't some magical relic. This is a manual transmission (gears must be changed manually) ... changing from 1 to 2, etc, would be rough: the clutch is just friction material to be used to make that transition comfortable (and costs $1000 every 60-100k miles) (...auto trannies cost money too, fyi). You want to use as little 'excess gas' as possible, and have the 'quickest smooth engagement' possible.
Learning all that/1st gear is really the hardest part. Afterwards, there is shifting between gears (1st into 2nd). Same overall process -- but you want that process to be "as easy//frictionless as possible". The different gears have different HP/Torque ratios, 1st is going to have the most torque (hence why it's used to start from a stop), while 6th is going to have the highest top speed (but will be slower to accelerate than a lower gear with more torque).
--Thus, when shifting from 1st gear, at 3000RPM ... 2nd gear is going to ride at 2000RPM (roughly).
You have two options there: You can either put the clutch in (disengage engine from driveshaft), let it naturally fall to 2000RPM, and re-engage ... or, you can prematurely let the clutch out, and use the clutch material to force the engine to slow down to 2000RPM. At the end of the day, 1st gear at 3000RPM going 15mph will always end up transitioning into 2nd gear, 2000RPM, 15MPH.
--Letting the engine fall naturally to 2000RPM (cluch pressed in), and then "quickly letting the clutch out", to let everything happen at 2000RPM is what's referred to as "rev matching", and it's the nicest way to treat your car.
---If you're really just trying to race, you can still make this happen faster/a bit jerkier by letting the clutch out anyways, and forcing the RPM to drop/the shift to complete.
You'll pretty much repeat this process, 3000RPM to 2000RPM through the gears. It depends on your car, if you're watching the tachometer, you'll learn which gears are what RPMs, at what speed. You'll develop a normal shift rhythm for normal driving. There's always "a little guesswork" if something prompts an oddly timed shift, but it's really not that complicated/serious.
Downshifting is the reverse: when you put the clutch in, you'll need to give the gas pedal a nice press, to blip up the RPM where you think it should go (2000RPM into 3000RPM, for example).
Anyways, just kind of had to write this because my mind is BOGGLED how this transpired lol. How the hell do we enter a situation where we try to start the car in FOURTH gear??? It'd be genuinely impossible (at least in my car), and would make 0 sense to try ... and it's impossible (?) to accidentally shift straight down, instead of left->up ... what the hell man.
Honestly, manuals are NOT a chore to drive. The ONLY exception is in rush-hour traffic -- and I'm talking *true* stop and go, moving at like 2mph. It does/should make you a more intelligent driver: if you're being actually competent: it does make you have to be more aware of the flow of traffic, and traffic light patterns. In a manual, you'll usually know what's going on a thousand feet ahead, see brakelights/slows, let off the gas ... coast at the low RPM-end of your gear, traffic will then get back up to speed, and then you'll use some gas again.
Tbh, the worst part is morons that literally don't understand the flow of traffic, and tailgate, and get pissed off. Seriously. Here's a fun math question:
Person A travels 500ft in 45 seconds. They reach a top speed of 30mph, but they have to stop 4 times.
Person B travels 500ft in 45 seconds. They reach a top speed of 12mpg, they stop 0 times.
      Question: Who got there faster?
Answer: Neither dumb***. they both got there in 45 seconds. Quit wasting gas on needless acceleration, needless brakepad on braking, bearings/gearings/etc on **** you don't need to be doing. Bonus: you're even helping the environment.

As many Europeans I have only ever owned manuals, and to me it’s not tedious at all. Only in heavy traffic do I sometimes wish I didn’t have to creep along, constantly on the clutch. In any other situation driving just becomes more fun and engaging in a manual.
Also, the car is cheaper to buy and sometimes even easier to drive (imho), such as when parking in tight spaces where you can use the clutch to modulate the speed.
