Great video. Wind damage is equally a worry, especially with the delicate variety such as Wilson’s Pink Dwarf.
In my case wind damage is even worse. A late frost is highly unlikely a where I live, but it can get pretty windy at times and that can totally ruin the leaves.
So my Japanese maple (young, ~3-4ft tall) got caught by a 2nd freeze here in north AL. The leaves that had already come out died off. C couple small shoots have grown out of the main trunk near the ground - they have some leaves on them (I left them so the tree had some nourishment). The top of the tree still looks dead/brittle. I'll go get some miracle grow. I hope it comes back.

Good video ...Last night in MA I lost two 4 foot tall Red Maples to frost/solid freeze. It hit down to 29 F on May 18 early AM. Glad to know they will recover.

This spring has been very odd when it comes to the Japanese red maples in our area. I've noticed in our area about half of them in surrounding neighborhoods the tips of the branches died. The buds fall right off before they could open and Im talking like 1ft or more of the branches. But most of the trees are leafing out further back in the tree.
This includes our 35 yr amoenum type and some saplings I grew from it from seed.
This winter got down to -9 F on one occasion, but that is still considered zone 6a range...Any Ideas? Or still likely just cold hardiness issues?
Warm winters followed by extremely cold drops late typically is the issue
is the post video up on how they made out in the frost?

Thank you so much for this. I'm container growing on a 3rd floor balcony and I just got my first dwarf Japanese maple (a 1 gallon red dragon from you guys) about 2 weeks ago. We were at almost 90 for highs for a couple of days, then dropped to lows in the high 30's with about 6 mph winds last night. I put the tree in our unheated outdoor storage closet for the night before the temp got too low, but I noticed that the wind had broken off a small branch before I got it in there. Any tips for what I should do to better protect such a young maple from the wind in general? Is the storage closet my best bet even during the day, or would moving into my apartment until the wind passes be better since it can still get sun there?

What 2 ghost series trees would u say have the smallest leafs out of all of them and good for a bonsai?
Hello / Good Morning . My weather will be in the 80's today , 70's for the weekend then Monday night/Tuesday morning upper 20's then back to mild Frost free the rest of the week 😢 . I received 12 plants from MrMAPLE a couple of weeks ago that are being carried in and out to avoid all Temps under35 and I have another box of 8 maples due via FedEx on Saturday. OH SPRING , QUIT THIS ON & OFF STUFF ! While #MAPLESRULE my back is suffering !

Standard miracle grow works great I try to stay low on nitrogen

My blood good maple was budding out when we had a late freeze here in the mountains of East Tennessee. All the buds turned brown and now the tree looks completely dead. Any advice would be appreciated

@@jacquelineinthewoods yes give it a scratch to see if it has green bark then use a liquid fertilizer like Miracle grow

Is a Coralinum not leafing out frost or freeze damaging? It's not brittle so I don't think it's dead. It's in a container.
It could possibly but there are lots of factors
I have a maple in it's 3rd year of doing great and it started to bud, then we had a pretty bad frost. It did not replace the buds and started growing shoots just above the main crotch... as well as many sucker type buds on the trunk. I've been patiently waiting hoping it will continue to shoot bud out further up. It's been a about 5 weeks now since the first shoots and I have one more that showed up about 2 weeks ago but nothing new the past week. I stayed on top of the suckers, plucking them off, but I'm beginning to think the mature branches of the tree are not going to be viable. Should I just order a new one?
Try a light liquid fertilizer like Miracle grow to see if it pushes any. Also give a light scratch test art the top to see if it has any green below

I'm still worried about my shantung maple. It still looks like a little bald guy at the top and I don't want to cut those, because it's the crown, but I'm afraid our Texas sun is going to burn it when summer comes. It's clearly still alive, I did a scratch test on the bark. It's tried to bud out, but then just stopped. The nursery planted it for me and did add something to the soil to fertilize/feed the tree. So I don't know if adding miracle grow would actually be detrimental. I just don't want my tree to die 😫 I named it and everything 🥺
I would mix up a batch of miracle grow at half strength and SPRAY the whole tree : bark , stems , branches & leaves . #MAPLESRULE
