On the brink of turning 30, a promising theater composer navigates love, friendship and the pressure to create something great before time runs out. - ZĂĄbava
This performance is stunning, the putting on a fake smile, while their eyes are screaming despair and frustration and pure panic. This movie was everything.
Lol I thought it was funny. The comedy

I am obsessed with the moment when they are embracing and the camera focuses on Jonathan's fingers trying to find a rhythm and right after having the light from the car passing outside, almost as if to imply he's about to be exposed by Susan. Those small details make this movie that much better. It was so good that as soon as I saw those fingers moving I knew what was coming. Genius directing.
Exactly!
simply amazing!
I took it as like when you realize something, it's like a light comes on.
She realized that they were not gonna be able to turn back to make things "work", even though personally I think they could've never really worked because they had different ambitions to pursue in life.

In the heights sucks though
Apparently she has only a small part, but she does deserve more, yeah
If there's any consolation, Vanessa Hudgens was in a production of In The Heights with Anthony Ramos. So this isn't her first rodeo with a Lin-Manuel Miranda musical
@@pauljohn961 I actually liked itđ
@@pauljohn961 I agree. In the heights really did suck aside from a couple songs.
In other movies, this would be paired with something heartbreaking but its comical instead. Gives us a sense that the pair was never really right for each other. They were just supporting characters to each other's dream, despite the immense love they clearly had for each other. It celebrates Jonathan's life as a joyful journey he endured. Not all of it is pretty, but he stayed doing what he loved until his last breath.
Wow, nicely said
Really beautiful
I actually didn't see this as comedical, I saw it as tragic. Don't get me wrong, I get your point, but the tragedy of this comedical song was all happening in their eyes. Pretending to be happy, afraid to say the wrong thing, protecting each other and themselves from the truth, while at the same time being in complete panic, being frustrated and lost. The eyes are the window to our soul, and while their face was a pretty facade, their eyes said it all.
@@AngelusHale That's a really good point! I think most of us have been in this kind of fight, I know I have. Looking back at those moments, I choose to laugh at how stupid I was, thinking I knew better and I knew what my partner wanted. It made the breakup feel less tragic to me... reminding me to focus on the bright side of something so tragic. Much like what jonathan does with life. I guess that's what I mean by comedical haha...
Very much a "laugh through the pain" situation - because if you actually stop to feel the weight of what's happening, it all comes crashing down, so you do what you have to do to keep going. The show must go on, as they say.

I couldnât stop laughing when he started tapping his fingers on her like a keyboard.. âoh my god you sick freak youâre thinking about how you could turn this awful fight we just had into a song arenât you?â
That's pretty common in artists. A fragment from Sandman by Neil gaiman "I watched my life as if it were happening to someone else. My son died. And I was hurt, but I watched my hurt, and even relished it, a little, for now I could write a real death, a true loss. My heart was broken by my dark lady, and I wept, in my room, alone; but while I wept, somewhere inside I smiled."
It's also the reason a lot of artists are pretty self destructive and commit acts of self sabotage that are mind boggling to even themselves.
Been there. The best thing I've ever written came out of a combination of the worst things that have happened to me, and I'm actually appreciative of it because I could not have created what I did without it.

1:52 Susanâs reaction to him yelling is so moving for some reason, like heâs never spoken to her like that before. I hope the actress that played Susan wins an award! She was FLAWLESS in this scene!
I feel like it's more how he invalidated her unhappiness with "Everyone is unhappy in New York" essentially trying to weasel away from the fact that it was him making her unhappy (not New York)
Both Vanessa and Andrew were so good in this as everyone says but Alexandra Shipp embodied that. She's so good in it's a sin it doesn't surprise me that she would be as brilliant but it really brings the 'pleading for a sign of caring' and all the heartbreak that is
She does look a lot like Lydia west, who was in Its a Sin, and who was amazing, but itâs not actually the same person. I thought exactly the same thing when I first saw her

Somehow, this wasn't the treatment I was expecting for this song, yet I absolutely love it. How the argument gets more heated as the tempo gets faster, the instrumentals gradually getting goofier feeling like the film (or maybe in this case, future Jon?) is siding with Susan... And how the argument ends with Susan realizing that Jon is already thinking about turning all of that into... Well, THIS song, Therapy. Honestly, this the best musical sequence in the film for me. Fcking brilliant and so well peformed and edited.
Exactly! When the fight was about to start I was getting kind of bored, expecting for it to be a classic two lovers yelling at each other with tears eyes bur unable to actually convey anything situation which while there isnât inherently wrong with that, it can get very tedious to watch
But I was pleasantly surprised with an ear worm
This performance was my favourite in the movie. Although they were both putting on a fake smile, Andrew's eyes were full of stress, regret and panic, whereas her eyes were slightly annoyed and at a stretch angry. Amazing musical, and an amazing performance by two terrific actors.

On the stage version, this song kind of exists in the middle or in the in-between of comedy and drama since it is sung with Susan. Despite its playful tone, it is still an actual fight with Susan. Moreover, the lyrics make more sense since the reason why Susan wanted to move away was to settle down and start a family with Jonathan. It had nothing to do with her own career.
I LOVE the movie version because they completely elevated Susanâs character to more than just a nagging girlfriend who was jealous of Karessa (Iâm so glad they didnât pit the two women together). She wanted to make a decision for HERSELF. She wants to discuss it with Jonathan since they are in a relationship but if heâs not going to show up for her then why should she? She was gonna do whatâs best for her and I LOVE that. But because Susan and Jonathanâs relationship in the movie was way less toxic, the song no longer makes sense as they didnât reach that level of animosity. And by completely separating the fight with the song, it allowed them to really pour themselves into the heat of the argument as well as really play up the humour of the song and so the two scenes contrasted perfectly.
This movie is a silent killer.
