Rihanna - ANTI
/ anti
open.spotify.com/album/48i37a...
Anti (stylised in all caps) is the eighth studio album by Barbadian singer Rihanna, released on 28 January 2016 by Roc Nation and Westbury Road. Rihanna started recording in 2014 after ending her contract with Def Jam Recordings, who had released all of her albums since her debut in 2005. As executive producer, Rihanna recorded Anti with producers including Jeff Bhasker, Boi-1da, DJ Mustard, Hit-Boy, Brian Kennedy, Timbaland and No I.D., at studios in Canada, the United States and France. SZA and Drake contribute guest vocals.
Conceived when Rihanna was experiencing creative struggles and emotional turmoil, Anti features an atmospheric production characterised by lo-fi beats, distorted vocals and downtempo arrangements. The first half consists of bass-heavy tracks, and the second is characterised by textured minimalism. Compared to the radio-friendly dance tunes of her previous albums, Anti is an alternative R&B, pop and dancehall album, more muted and soulful. Its songs explore eclectic styles spanning hip hop, soul, psychedelic, doo-wop, country, synth-rock and trap. Their lyrics are about the emotions ensued from love and relationships, from endearment and desire to betrayal and liberation.
The promotional campaign for Anti from summer 2014 comprised prolonged release delays and a $25 million deal with Samsung. Rihanna announced the cover art and title at the MAMA Gallery on 7 October 2015. The Anti World Tour ran from March to November 2016, and four songs were released as singles, including the US Billboard Hot 100 number one "Work". In the United States, Anti is Rihanna's second number-one album and the first album by a black woman to spend 300 weeks on the Billboard 200. The album topped charts in Canada and Norway, and peaked in the top five on charts in such European countries as Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
In contemporary publications, critics commended the album's emotional honesty but were divided on the production, praise centering on Rihanna's newfound musical freedom and criticism on the unfocused track list. Some took issue with the lack of radio-friendly songs, but others noted the musical shift marked Rihanna's artistic maturity as an album artist beyond her status as a pop star. At the 2017 Grammy Awards, the album and its singles received six nominations, including one for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Anti featured on 2010s decade-end lists by such publications as Billboard, NME and Pitchfork. It ranked 230th on Rolling Stone's 2020 edition of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Consideration is a revolutionary track to me. It showed Rihanna still had it vocally and showed SZAs amazing song writing
lol this sounds so "fake fan-ish" of me but that song introduced me to sza and im forever grateful...speaking of sza i really hope they do a video for sos soon
consideration is my absolute favorite song of all time
@@Johhhnnnyyy yes I was really hoping they'd do SOS when it came out, but maybe some day
I’ve been in love with consideration ever since the first time I heard it. never gets old. also, Forgiveless on SZA’s new album gives me similar vibes of Consideration. Like the rapping parts.

For me, this album took Rihanna from a pop afterthought to a generational artist. There are no skips and her voice is flat out Magic.
Facts
Pop afterthought? I don’t think she had been that since *very* early in her career
She’s never been an after thought. She’s always been ahead of the game let’s not lie here
Btw when she recorded higher she was apparently too drunk and didn’t want to finish because it was authentic to the meaning of the song lol she is the baddest in the business effortlessly
When has she ever been an after thought???
Rihanna described Higher as a drunk voicemail and thats such a perfect way to describe it. My favorite Rihanna song.🤍
she even was drunk while recording it
When the album first came out I remember reading she was inspired by Amy Winehouse on that track.
higher perfectly encapsulates what it's like to be absolutely hammered, defenses down, and finally confess how deeply you love someone
Anti is actually a concept album based on the idea of “Anti-pop” that’s why the songs are so diverse and genre-bending
God Rihanna is just a genius. Is there anything she can’t do?
@@emmabunch-benson4795 release a ninth album apparently
@@NikkuManAMVs lmaoooo
it's also mainly an R&B album. it was called anti because it's an _antithesis_ of her previous work
Sza played Rihanna Tame Impala in a studio session ( with Kendrick Lamar there as well ) and sza said “You’ve gotta check them out”
Rihanna became obsessed with New Person, Same Old Mistakes and her management reached out to Kevin Parker ( Lead singer of Tame Impala ) and he said he was more than happy to send it her way and is quoted as saying he was honored and loves the finished product. :)
( Love your videos and love you and your dad! More lana and charli pls. Hehehe ❤️ )
Isn’t tame impala only Kevin Parker?
@@kkulturen Yess, but a lot of people think it’s a whole band. Saur i just added lead singer lmao
Not only that but he also said that he actually envisioned that song to be an R&B song when he created it, so he felt truly honored for someone like Rihanna to complete his vision for the song.
@@RodrigoJGuzman Bro Kevin Parker is a fucking gem

This is one of the greatest albums of the 2010s. You should listen to Ctrl by Sza. Incredible ✨

I would love them to do the new SZA album ....SOS
@@highsnob5717 SOS is a great album and I love it, but it would be great to show him the evolution of Sza. Maybe even from Z (2014)

@@trippvanornum7663 is ur name Tripp as well?!?? Omg… and we both like SZA
Your dad really capture the essence of the album. The name is not random. ANTI is a representation of an anti album. Rihanna thought of something weird and constructed this record. It started with 2 short tracks that functions as interludes. It has so many tracks that don't sound alike, making the project a little all over the place. It has some bangers that are so short to make us feel uncomfortable like it happens with "Higher". Also, sometimes, if feels that the tracks are out of order -or out of the expected order for this kind of artist. It is so weird that, at first, it didn't click with fans. Most of us felt like it was such a strange album, specially after starting the era with Work. But it aged like wine. Today, it's considered the best Rihanna project and her defining album. The last music she left for the world. Something we, sadly, don't know if we gonna get more.
Ohhh this one had me locked first play. I think I had this and Arianas album from 2016 on blast non stop for almost a year. This is my favorite album of hers and gave me an updated feeling of Rated R. I’m glad it grew on people cause it was SICKENING first play.
Omg I just thought about the idea of anti being released. I never experienced that release but putting out ‘work’ and shifting the entire vibe is just insane. I wonder how my opinion of the album would’ve changed if I was tuned into the release haha I first heard it 2 years ago and it was magic. Every track.
Love how alot of people hated this album at first. Think fans didn't like how she went from pop to more modern rnb. For me was a great move and shows she was spot on as that's the vibe now.
did they really??? i wasn’t on social media at the time so i have no idea but i loved this album from the start!!!
They were deluded following other people's thoughts without even properly giving the album a listen
Didn’t this album sell a mln first week they definitely gave it a listen
I was not much of a fan but gave this a listen since she gave this away as a free download. It really won me over.
no the real fans loved it because this the the real rihanna we know from previous album deep cuts. on the pop fans didn't like it at first
Album was ahead of its time
Great Fan 👍 Thanks for the love ❤️ Dm me above on telegram, got you something special.🎁🎁
That’s what the Grammys board said when they snubbed her 8 nominations/wins and took 2 tracks off for nominations too. She could’ve had 10 Grammys or at least 5
They said it was ahead of its time… but I’m still waiting for them to honour it*
Your Dad needs to watch Rihanna perform Love on the Brain live. His mind will be blown
this album is literally no skips lmao. a masterpiece, and you dad loved all the ones i love so i loved seeing that 🤍
big agreee!!!
Kiss it better is one of the best songs of our generation !!! I will not argue about it

I'm not sure if you already knew this but The Weeknd wrote Woo for Rihanna and there's a demo version of Abel singing it that was sent to Rihanna to mimic. It definitely gives old school Abel vibes and I love ittt
Plus Travis Scott produced it and has a verse on a demo version along with Jeremih

‘Higher’ is one of my favourite vocals of all time. Shit is incredible.
I almost forgot just how much I loved this album.
Same! 2016 was a good year for music
this album has held me down for years and it still does. i come back to this album alot. if this was riri's last album i would be ok with it.

A LOT of people underestimate Rihanna and discredit her for her vocal ability when she's a powerhouse! RIHSPECT RIH
Her best album that I constantly put on repeat. Coming from someone who doesn’t really enjoy Rihanna, this album is really amazing. 9/10
I feel you. I didn't fully appreciate her voice & talent & wasn't much of a fan till I heard this album. I need to listen to her other albums now even though they may not be as good in your opinion.
If you think its a 9/10 you enjoy Rihanna 😂
agreed!
@@augusts1 oh I’m the total opposite lol. I know her voice and talent is good, but like Taylor Swift I just don’t enjoy the music she produces. Even after anti I don’t enjoy Rihanna’s other projects.

She may have stopped producing music, but she left us with a masterpiece of an album
I remember she released her tour tickets before the album even dropped and boy did the risk pay off for fans, she was phenomenal live defo one of the best singers of our generation
The genuine love and appreciation y'all have for music is just something else. Rihanna is really really really really phenomenal.
Not dad being a Rihanna stan. Take your crown king!
rihanna's cover of new person, same old mistakes is amazing!!
I can’t remember where I saw it but for Higher she was drunk and just going. I ALMOST had it as my first dance at my wedding. It’s one of my favorites of hers entirely. It feels like you’re in a small club and she’s on stage with a whiskey and cigarette. I love her voice in it. Chills every single time.
The background has people talking and sounds of glasses to make you feel in a bar drinking with her, amazing
This album brings back the simpler days when this came out 🙂
Totally wasn't aware SZA was on this album! She's one of my favorite singers now, can I request a turning the tables for SOS?
I have seen Rihanna 3 times and the anti tour was the only one that didn’t sell out in the UK but it was a bit of a change in direction in the UK market. If this album was out now in the UK it would be massive.
I’m a huge Rihanna fan and this feels like the most authentic version of Rihanna.
To speak to your comment on taking her voice for granted or overlooking- I think this album was her first album of tracks that shape the music to Rihanna's voice, and not vice versa. The album is perfectly in her register and made to display her warmth, her gravel, her range. Her live performances from this album are beyond anything she had ever done previously (Love on The Brain live is incredible) and I believe it's due to her fully singing in her range. The genres in this album also lend to her vocals. This was such a departure from the pop track vocals she had become synonymous with. If you listen back to previous albums, especially Rated R and Talk That That, you'll hear that the edgy sounds and warmth of her vocals in Anti were always there but in this album she perfectly leaned into it. Such an incredible album from her.
Her rendition of Tame Impala’s “New Person, Same Ol’ Mistakes” is golden. Although all songs are great on this, but that and “Never Ending” are always my go to. Chills…
and never ending is written all by herself...
To answer the question whether people heard Same Ol Mistakes for the first time and didn’t know it was a cover. Yes absolutely. That’s one of my favorite and most played songs from the album and I didn’t know until you said so. This is why I enjoy this channel.
Same just learnt that watching this 😂
I didn’t know it was a cover until now either. 🤣
damn, y'all really found out 5+ years later, crazy 💀💀
@@jaspersroom1934want a cookie dumb b? Move tf around.
one of my all time favorite albums. i love it because it‘s so divers soundwise, but all the songs still fit together perfectly. and same ol‘ mistakes was how i discovered tame impala, so i‘m grateful for that too
same here! When the album dropped I felt like if i was literally in a trance with same ol’ mistakes, I remember having it on repeat all night in my headphones. Then I discovered tame impala and my whole life changed jajaja
I’ve always compared Rihanna’s voice to an electric guitar! There’s a duality to it if that makes sense. On one hands she’s sings and on the other her vocals become an instrument. It can be super edgy and raw or soft. I just love it. It’s why she can dip into most music genres and they’re all bangers!❤
I very recently went back in her discography and listened to R rated and Loud again after a few years, but I think this is her best work to date
for me its Rared R. its raw, dark and emotional
love when people put respect on rihanna’s vocals 😤 i am going to revisit her discography cause she’s great
One of the best albums of the past 20 years
kiss it better is one of them special songs, every great artist has some songs you can consider some of the greatest of all time, Riri has more than some, to me kiss it better is just her best.
19:44 when I first heard my mom playing this song I didn’t know that it was a cover and when I first listened to currents and came across new person, same old mistakes, I was shocked.
her best album. i love how dad described the songs and his thoughts. *ANTI* is timeless i think. she did good!
tell me why the dad has a more youthful energy than the son lmfao

i've been a fan of Rihanna for more than a decade but the day this album dropped, I just knew Love On The Brain is the best song she ever released
Rihanna came out the gate swinging! A phenomenal album that will stand the test of time! Like every track bangs!

This is truly a top 5 album for me, there are no skips on this album and the deluxe version has three more great tracks but Sex with Me is definitely one of the best. I think sometimes we forget how great Rihanna's music is since she hasn't dropped in awhile but even if she never drops an album again I can say that this is one helluva way to go out.
What a great christmas gift this video is!! Love this album and the vibes in this vid:) happy holidays to whover is reading this!

We can tell it’s your favourite 🤣
Incredible album.
Robbed of all the Grammy nominations
I think she had 7 or 8 nominations for this album.
the thing I love about this channel. Is how you allow yourself to hear every aspect of every song. The way music is supposed to be enjoyed I LOVE it x
For me, it was the first album in a long time of Rihannas that i actually found interest in. I like experimental, weird sounds fit into an RnB base. Even though Rihanna imo doesn’t have the best voice, what matters is that she really knows what sounds fit her voice best.
Its crazy how much longevity and relevance this album has had, especially for 6 years old.
All sounds fit Rihanna’s voice😂 LITERALLY that’s the POINT, she has NO LIMITS, she can do vocally stunning powerhouse songs like “Love On The Brain” slow it down with “Yeah, I Said It” then Trap “Needed Me” then Alternative Indie Funk “Same Ol’ Mistakes” she does EVERY STYLE, GENRE, HEIGHT & AESTHETIC with her sound/voice🙌🏽
People kill me when they say Rihanna doesn’t have a good voice or can’t sing because she can and has proven over time that she truly can. Otherwise she’d have been a one hit wonder!
Not everyone needs to sing like Beyonce. It gets boring sometimes. Plus our generation tend to cling more on artists who are more rounded than clinging on just vocal ability.
That’s why artists like lil yarchy is still relevant and going on a world tour regardless of him being able to sing or not!
@@demarkuspayton8203EXACTLY.
“even though rihanna doesn’t have the best voice” blah blah this is where your comment becomes garbage.. she can literally do ANY sound and it stills work for her because she’s versatile & her voice is outstanding, she’s proven that MANY times. y’all gon stop discrediting her singing when you can’t even mimic a rihanna note clown 😬
One of my favorite albums. Every time I hear it I go right back to that time in my life when it first came out.
I like this channel bc I completely fall back in love with songs I haven’t heard in a while and sometimes an album comes out that you aren’t ready to hear at that moment in time ! And then you hear it years later like “ yes !!”
one of my favorite albums of all time. so happy you guys did this one!!!
This react made me go back in time, this album is soooo good
watching your channel has made me discover more music than i can ever think of, thank you.
Fun fact, she sang james joint drunk on whiskey. Which makes it so MUCH more better lol
i love Kevin’s comment about her vocals on woo. the best bits of music for me is when you can acc hear their emotion and it’s so nice to feel that without the shrill that normally comes with pelting
i love this album so much its a top ten record for me. thank you so much for reacting to this
Been waiting for Riri reaction since yall started this and here it is! Your dad always loved when she was featured on some of the albums
Alternate title: My dad falling in love with Rihanna for 33 minutes
Idk why watching them vibe and genuinely digest each track gives me CHILLSSS. Each track just gives me goosebumps when it’s being listened to like this
It’s been said so many times before me but this channel gives me a new appreciation for music I’ve listened to a hundred times. Always feels like your dad’s first listen is also my first listen. Thank you!
I love this album
Thanks for reacting guys ❤
This album never fails to amaze me and I love that there are still people listening to it for the first time in 2022.
Rihanna is such an angel. She even let Tame Impala do the song one whole year before she released it. Legend IMO
I forget all the time how much I love this album
I love your dads reactions!! It’s so crazy to me how different generations react and listen to our generations music. One of my fav albums from Rihanna and y’all had a great take on it!
Watching you guys vibe to this reminded me how much I enjoyed this album! 🙌🏾
Highly recommen you to try Loud and Unapologetic. A lot of people think Rihanna is just that classic pop girl but they just never really listened to those greats albums
Unapologetic is second best to this…
Fun fact she was actually drunk while recording Higher, which added to her rasp in her voice
yeah this album is incredible! i’ve been obsessed with this album since the day it came out, but this review made me fall in love with it AGAIN ✨
oh to be able to listen to ANTI for the first time again! loved seeing kevin's reaction to one of my fav album (especially higher cause ikr!! why the best song has to be the shortest!)
Damn. I wish you had done the Delux album. My favourite of her songs - "Sex with me" - is the last track on the whole album. Thanks, fellas take care
omfg damn
'. . . spacious, eh?' Are you Canadian, Kevin? LOL.
This was my full album intro to her since she gave the album away as a free download. I had heard her singles of course but this was the first time I actually listened on headphones too & fully appreciated her voice/talent. It gradually took hold on me since I tend to like more indie/DIY artists/bands with less glossy production. I am a fan now though. Thank you for reviewing this since it's helped me understand the production & why I responded so well to it.
I’m always on the brink of tears whenever I listen to ‘close to you’
Its been 89 years!!!! We need her new album soon
ANTI is my favorite album by Rihanna. The production is so smooth and I absolutely adore WOO this is my favorite track from the album. Every song compared to each other are widely different grene-wise and takes you to another dimension. This is why Rihanna is so appreciated by the world. There's a reason that she is one of the biggest singers and ANTI is a shape-shifting mood and that's great. I can't wait for what's coming next with her repertoire. I want to know how her next album R9 will sound like. RIHANNA, your Navy loves you... ❤️
Greetings from Germany!
this and sza ctrl give me so much nostalgic vibes , i miss this time so much
You guys are so awesome!!! This album is an absolute masterpiece.
This was great, and I’m glad your dad really enjoyed the album! Listening to this here made me sad as even though this album was so good, the “experimental-ness” of it wasn’t dully appreciated in 2016/2017, which is in part why Rihanna decided to take a break and pursue other interests ( which eventually led to her billion dollar make up line Fenty Beauty and lingerie company SavagexFenty). Prior to this album, Rihanna had bought her masters (one of the youngest women to do so) and set up her own production label, so she could really take ownership of her sound ( which is why this album sounds so varied and different). It really hurt her that she put her all into music and after all her hard work in the industry (7 albums in 8 years at one point), she still wasn’t respected. ANTI is always a classic, and it’s only in the years after that people fully appreciated what she did.
Higher will never not make me tear up. To feel love lost in a cigarette smoke filled room just ugh gets me. Every. Fucking. Time.
Finally. I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time.
Absolutely love this album, wish you would’ve done the deluxe, but happy you did it at all.
According to management company Spinning Top, Rihanna’s team at Roc Nation reached out to them to ask if she could cover the song for the album. “Kevin [Parker] was more than happy to send it her way,” the statement revealed. “We’re all really happy with how the song turned out, love it!” Parker was also credited as producer on “Same Ol’ Mistakes.”
kiss it better is forever my favorite. it always feels like my first time listening to it when it comes on.
Was waiting for the Higher reaction the whole time. Love that song.
