Patti Smith was so enthusiastic like it was the first time she sang it. So awesome.
Yeah she was. Some of that may be because she’s absolutely plastered😂
But that’s perfectly fine with me bc this was incredible.

At an Amnesty International show in L.A. Bono was brought up on stage for Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom" encore with Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel, Sting & the Boss. It didn't look planned (evidently Bono had been in the audience) because you could see the 5 other singers laughing hard when he was invited on stage with the crowd going joyfully nuts as the Irish rocker looked somewhat abashed (I was only 10 rows back). When it came his turn to sing a stanza they handed him a sheet that he sang off of. That was COOL.
I love the way Adam Clayton sidles up so he can watch Patti sing...

They brought Roy Bittan (E. Street Band) who originated the piano part. In Bonos induction speech of Bruce at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame he called Bruce his Rock'n'Roll Buddha.

I love this perfonmance, the hug between Bono and the Boss, the way Patti looks Bruce at 2:04, the passion.... I can't understand how the audience is so stand!!
Agreed. But I think the reason why the audience seems a bit subdued is because they had to keep restarting the song bc Patti Smith was having a difficult time singing out of time and missing her mark. But the way they edited this you can’t tell it happened. That’s my guess for why the audience seemed not as enthusiastic as one would think considering how epic this was.

Bruce wrote and recorded it in 1977 but gave it to Patty and did not release his version until 1987. She changed some words and had her only hit with it. If Bruce had not given her this song most people would never have heard of her. Bruce sings HIS version in his concerts.
