The Vanos is the M62 B44 TU engine is the reason for premature wear. The Vanos system puts additional pressure / work on the Chain. The non Vanos Engine doesn´t get that pressure. Every TU Engine should need replacement (Chain Guides) at about 200.000 Kilometers. The Non Vanos (non-TU) ones, will last to 250.000 Kilometer witouth change. HAve seen non TU Engines with 300.000 Kilometers on the original Chain Guides. It´s a gamble. Problem with the chain Guides is the Oil bmw used. The 0W30 ist way to weak for the high engine working tempreatures of the V8. So yes, the Thermostate (?) from the 740d wich will keep the m62b44tu engine at a temprature between 84-92 C* combinied with a thicker oil (0w40 - 0w50 [if you drive hard]) will keep the Chain guides the best for the longest time. But a M62b44 non TU will always last longer than a M62b44TU. No difference, even if you change the tempratures.

@Casa Del Amo i was reffering to the fact, that the chain guides on the TU Version of the engine fail earlier then the Ones on the nonTU engine.
